Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

For anyone worried about the size of this game.

It's not that I doubt the game will be big ( the E3 trailer hinted more Earth locations beyond just Russia, for one ), but part of me is just a wee bit skeptical we'll see every single location that had been teased back in the Feb 2013 Destiny pre-reveal teaser.

I mean, Bungie clearly entertained space combat gameplay based on those teasers, but unless they pull a 'SUPRISE MOTHAGUARDIANS moment on us... riding our spacecraft ala TIE-fighter will probably have to wait till Destiny 2.

I'm really hoping Bungie extends it by a day. I'll be up until 3am EST until it dies or maybe we can keep it going!

Who's in with me?

Internet came back and I jumped right into this for 4 hours.

Yeah its fun. Its totally borderlands but made by a way better team.

Some ugly textures in PVP map and when I was trying to do the strike mission when the ghost was meant to be turning off that security fence thing it just stopped working and everyone just had to quit the mission after a few minutes of waiting around but other then that its totally fun.

I would like somewhere I could change my characters appearance, hair / face paint after creating it. One of my little annoyances are games that don't let you change your hairstyle after the character creator. Like Skyrim. A entire country full of people but not a single barber.

Will probably preorder for Beta access.

Absolutely hooked on this. My first impressions of the game weren't really all that positive but I should have expected it. Bungie's games are never super flashy and in your face. It's the perfect mechanics and design that keep you coming back for more and that's certainly the case here. I'm going to go into withdrawal when this Alpha ends.

Are there only 3 base primary gun types? (Scout rifles, pulse rifles, auto rifles)

There's also Hand Cannons, aka revolvers.

But I am kinda surprised by the lack of variety. I'm guessing/hoping it's because it's just the alpha. Because right now there's only 9-10 weapon types in total in the game. Which seems insanely low for the kind of game destiny is. You'd have to imagine that we could get access to some alien weaponry as well. Would be taking a huge step backwards from the Halo games if not

<3 so day one.

I was patrolling around the old highway and noticed that there was like a blizzard going through. I was at the same place yesterday and it was just a regular day. Stuff like that makes this game so awesome to revisit.

I hope we get to go down beneath the traveler.

Agreed with this, too. Was sort of surprised to see the low amount of weapon types. Maybe there's more in the final game/beta.

Just finished levelling my third character to level 8, so am just about done with the Alpha. It's a shame that none of your progress carries on to the retail version, I think I might skip the Beta so I don't wind up burning myself out on the early stages of the game post-release.

I'm completely sold on Destiny. Whilst I've been a huge Bungie fan for years, so will always give them the benefit of the doubt, the stuff I was hearing from interviews and such had me somewhat wary. It's very much a game you need to play yourself for a few hours to properly understand.

After messing around with the Alpha over the weekend, it's finally clicked, and I can see why Bungie/Activision have struggled to convey what the game actually is. There's a lot of confusing stuff in there at first, but it honestly does feel like a huge leap forward for the FPS genre, and I'm excited to dump thousands of hours into the final game in September.

What class are you guys playing as? I think Hunter is my favourite.

So on the ALpha, other accounts on my Ps4 don't work with it, it has to be mine. Usually, even DLC I buy my brother can play on his own account (we share a Ps4). So he just made his own character and has been playing on my account. Will this still happen on the retail release? I certainly hope one copy of the game isn't tied to one user account.

I wish Bungie could have given us a week for the alpha. This is such a tease haha, I want to play more. Hopefully the beta has different content.

so according to the alpha bungie.net page, since i've installed this game on thursday night, i've played a total of 1 day, 1 hour, and 31 minutes. Yeah, I'm addicted >_>

thats over 25 hours already...just into a freakin alpha :P

Here is that earth map, but this time with the icons

So yeah, the Strike is the shield icon in the middle of Devils Lair ( Den of Devils ) ( this is for the guy having difficulty finding it )

OH MY GOD I have the best idea!

Okay so Bungie, since people love to do other things while the game is loading the next match or or level, you should make it so that a message comes through the speaker of the controller when the game is ready.

This is best.

Any chance of this being extended a day or two?

personally i think all alpha testers should become official bungie employees. They can send us a new build every few weeks and we will test it.

I don't know about ya'll, but would be hard work ... i would hate it. But I would do it ... for the sake of the game ya know?

Would be cool.

I like how in Transistors the voice of the sword could be put through the controller, and the controller's lights would flash in unison with the sword in the game. They could do something like this with your orb cube companion thing. Have the voice come through the controller.

Finally experienced the game breaking glitch where the screen goes crazy after running away from a huge pack soloing. Feels bad man.

Is it September yet?

Went back to tussle with the lvl 16 Hallowed Knight and this guy was here to greet me instead. 3 of us eventually pushed him off the cliff, then the Hallowed Knight respawned shortly afterwards.

Edit: Why do my exported PS4 screens look like poo? I used the save to USB feature, then sent it as an attachment via psn and saved but they still look like garbage.

Where is this? I'd like to find it myself.

Just got up to 165 defense. :D

The good:

# exploration maps and public events very similar to Guild Wars 2, fun PvE in general
# PvP (capture points) is nicely done and fun
# seamless multiplayer player pop-in
# simple and clean UI

The bad:

# very classical console shooter feel with boring weapons (at least to level 8)
# bullet spongey mini and main bosses are very annoying and time consuming to kill
# public events and some PvE missions need rebalance
# Tower (main city) is very basic/small

Pessimism detroyed personally, preordered it again

2 issues:
Dark corners are too dark, with no manual torch it's difficult to tell if you're walking into a tunner or a wall
Difference beteen ambient music and loud music is too large, so when the loud music kicks in, it's far too loud

Hope the amount of options for taking missions on doesn't fragment the public playerbase too much

Controls are perfect

Only 2 suggestions-

1. Use the d pad for more than emotes. Maybe map consumables?
2. A tower shooting range to experiment with new weapons.

Great job Bungie! I now bought your game based on this alpha.

Hope more developers take note.

I agree with most of this but the bosses definitely die faster the higher level you are. My last strike mission took about 30 minutes. I tried it as a level 3 and it took nearly 2 hours. The weapons need better balancing and could handle a bit better. The heavy weapons don't feel powerful enough IMO and the weapon switching to heavy is kind of annoying. The crucible matchmaking is horrible too.

This may seem like a lot of complaints but I really am liking it. Thought I'd list out the negatives in hopes they get fixed. I don't know if I want to play the alpha more today because Im already Damn addicted and want to play the shit out of the retail version

Bungie.net/alpha plz! The team is scouring forums, but it's so much easier for them to get good organized feedback on the site. :)

Was there a way to switch between weapons of the same class without going through the options menu in the end?

I'd really like a way to go scout rifle to auto rifle quickly.

Edit: also was the secondary ammo disappearing when switching from sniper to fusion rifle a bug? Ammo management seems a little odd. Bullets seem universal amongst primary weapons but you get less total on a scout rifle than an auto, then shotgun and sniper secondary ammo seems to carry over, but change to a fusion rifle and it resets.

I only tried a pulse very briefly so I don't remember how it behaves.

Asking where it is doesn't sound much like you want to find it yourself ;P

After playing a good chunk of this alpha, across all classes, i have to say i'm really like it it. It isn't the genre defining experience some are claiming it to be, and it certainly doesn't really push the boundaries much, but it's a nice FPS that combined halo's gunplay with borderlands structure. And i love it and can't wait for the final release. Even the PVP which i'm not a huge fan of usually is fun to play. It's a very safe and familiar experience but a good one. And at the end of the day it gives playstation fans a means to play halo's multiplayer on a sony system.

What i don't like though are the spongy bosses which aren't very challenging but are very long winded. Nothing says tedious like shooting something with 8 million bullets from all angles for 30 minutes (exaggeration) and that's with a team of alpha maxed players, with good weapons and focusing on weakspots. And then on top of that the bosses do something i absolutely hate...random mob spawns. I understand why they're there, to combat the games ammo system and counteract the loss of ammo that the boss is absorbing. Doesn't make it any less cheap though. So i'm hoping those will get tweaked. Maybe more attack patterns but a smaller health bar?

I also don't like the spawn rate of enemies. I understand they'll eventually need to return for the sake of the grind. But it feels like your actions have no real impact on the world at all. Essentially it's the far cry 2 respawning checkpoints only it's happening for every single openworld encounter you ever have. I've literally ran around a crate 3 ft away and the enemies had respawned. Kinda stupid imo.

And finally. The voice acting. I'm really digging the world of destiny, and the races and the tower, and i was hoping for something along the lines of halo in regards to story, script and voice work. But so far i'm massively disappointed in that area. And it's not just dinklages second rate performance, it goes all the way to the PVP announcer who sounds so bored, it makes the match your playing seems infinitely less interesting. I can only hope we're hearing placeholder work, or stuff that hasn't been filtered and tweaked because i was expecting destiny to be borderlands with a great story and voice acting and after the samples from the alpha, i'm not sure i'll be getting that.

I don't really like FPS, I usually find RPG mechanics annoying, and I'm allergic to anything related to MMOs, but I can't get enough of that game.
