Hahaha, YESSS

Seeing that minigame triggers some fierce PTSD

Probably should though. 3 reps for a series whose last game was a remake and one before that was like 8 years ago is too much.
There's a new Star Fox coming out for WiiU in 2015. And Star Fox 64 3D wasn't too long ago. If relevance is something to consider, it's not an issue for Star Fox.

I really hope that Gematsu leak is proven fake. Everyone is expecting those 3 newcomers. Truthfully, the newcomers within the Gematsu leak were very obvious additions (except Wii Fit Trainer).

We can all agree that Ivysaur, Squirtle, and Snake are likeliest to get the axe, right?
Those three, plus Lucas. Lucas being the only one explicitly mentioned by the leaker as likely to be cut.

Actually, since the leaker didn't mention Ivysaur, Squirtle and Snake, maybe we'll still see them.

I think there's a nonzero chance that an Advance Wars character becomes his spiritual successor.

Despite its popularity in fan rosters, Sakurai doesn't usually pass movesets on to new characters. We still have Sheik and not Impa, for example. Besides, it wouldn't represent Advance Wars' gameplay all that well, and that's something they're targeting for all the newcomers.

Well we have no idea how the alleged leaker acquired their information. Maybe they saw the name Lizardon (Charizard) and assumed the other two were counted along side that. That is one of the bits of information the leaker never revealed.

Sure it does. He's quite tactical.

Plus, I'm not saying they'd clone him, just use the general framework. e.g. Lucario is quite different from Mewtwo, but you can see the inspiration in a lot of his moves.

Why do people keep bringing up ROB when discussing characters being cut?
He's been cut from every other crossover series he's appeared in.

I'm joking. That's terrible reasoning. But Sakurai might have to make a decision and who is he going to pick? If we group the Brawl veterans by their roster safety, would it not look something like this?

Code:
Tear list

[B]8) Tier[/B]
Captain Falcon

[B]:) Tier[/B]
Wario
Jigglypuff
Metaknight
Ganondorf
Game and Watch

[B]:| Tier[/B]
Ness
Ice Climbers
Falco

[B]:( Tier[/B]
Wolf
ROB
Lucas

[B]:,( Tier[/B]
Squirtle
Ivysaur
Snake

Please improve it. Now that you mention it, ROB could be bumped up a tier.

Tell me why Ness is far down.
According to the Gematsu leak, they're debating cutting either Lucas or Ness. If this is true, I give Ness much higher odds of returning, but would not be totally shocked if they choose Lucas (or if they both return). It is definitely arbitrary; help improve it, please

Wolf's situation is closer to Dedede than Lucas; save for Dedede's close connection to Sakurai. Both were planned for inclusion in 64 and Melee, and diversify their series' representation by fulfilling an antagonistic role.

I'd say R.O.B. is safe because he's such an awesome way to represent a part of Nintendo's history, and his silhouette and the way he moves are completely unique.

Here's my take:

8) Tier
Captain Falcon
Ice Climbers
Meta Knight
Wario
Ness
Jigglypuff
Ganondorf
Mr. Game & Watch

:) Tier
Falco
Wolf
R.O.B.

:( Tier
Snake
Squirtle
Ivysaur

:,( Tier
Lucas

Worth noting: There are Ice Climbers enemies in the game, and the Wario "W" appears for the Assist Trophies of Waluigi and Ashley (and I mean c'mon, he's effing Wario)

Is there going to be any content from the Layton games? Seems odd that one of their bigger modern franchises isn't in the game, though I guess Level-5 might complicate things.

Code:
[B]8) Tier[/B] - (Shoe-ins.)
Mr. Game and Watch
Captain Falcon
Ness
Ice Climbers

[B]:) Tier[/B] - (Don't have any real doubt.)
Ganondorf
Meta Knight
Ice Climbers
Wario

[B]:| Tier[/B] - (Probably in, but don't feel too strongly.)
Falco
Jigglypuff
ROB

[B]:( Tier[/B] - (Prognosis looks bad.)
Wolf
Lucas

[B]:,( Tier[/B] - (I'll get my shovel.)
Snake
Squirtle
Ivysaur

R.O.B.
R.O.B.

For Sure
Mr. Game & Watch
Captain Falcon
Ice Climbers
Wario

Pretty Much For Sure
Ganondorf
Meta Knight
Ness
Jigglypuff
Falco

SAKURAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIII
Wolf
Lucas
Squirtle
Ivysaur
Snake

I was not expecting to like the Mii inclusion in this game at all, but I think they REALLY implemented them well; 3 types, customizable moves, armors. The more I see of them the more excited I get!

The one decision I don't agree with though is restricting Miis and customizable moves from Online with Randoms. I don't see them revoking the decision either which is a bummer.

So guys, Mii Fighters aren't allowed in online battles with randoms because they want to avoid bullying and insensitive imagery. But what's to stop people from uploading Miiverse screens of, say, religious figures, racial battles, etc? Will the Miiverse moderators be fighting a losing battle?

I don't even get this, surely bullying would be more potent if you used Miis with friends since you could make a Mii of them and then send it out to die. You really can't do that with strangers.

I really hope that customizable movesets are legal in tournaments. They would only take a few seconds to set-up (since there are only 3 possible options per special move) and would provide a lot of diversity in match-ups.

And they are in a sense fixed. You don't suddenly change movesets mid battle so one can't really use the no random elements argument against them.

The only problem is that they could be too overpowered, but you can't ban something like that from the get-go. You'd definitely need to see some evidence of that kind of thing before making a decision like that.

I'm just really ecstatic about the whole concept. I mean, it may not look that much different for most characters, but everyone is gonna have essentially 12 special moves. That's something I'm really excited to try out.

I'm honestly surprised Meta Knight hasn't been revealed yet.

One of Sakurai's creations has had multiple opportunities to be shown, who was even a starter character in Brawl, and yet he ain't here yet.

I don't expect him to be cut but it's just kinda weird.
Unless Sakurai realized he is impossible to balance.

They'll just ban the specials that are ridiculous, no need to ban customizable specials outright. I expect that there will be two types of tournaments at first (custom and static movesets), and then one will become dominant.

I know I often joke about running a tournament scene but seeing the Smash invitational makes me feel that, yes, an item based league could work.

Here's a question, do they have a doubles league (two vs two team battles) kind of like tennis does? Could be an interesting alternative and would allow for four players on screen while avoiding three people ganging up on one.

Doubles have been standard in Smash tournaments since they began lol.

Also, there is already a ruleset allowing for the use of items (in Brawl, at least), but no one ever participates in those kinds of tournaments.

Well that's why I'm asking since every video I've seen has been one or one but I don't want to make assumptions.

But I still can't get over how terrible most people in the Invitational were with items.
