Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

I mostly play as a woman in games. My first Skyrim character? Female. Ditto for Oblivion and Morrowind. My Halo 3 Spartan was female, as was my Reach Spartan. And in Destiny I'm playing a black woman with purple dreadlocks and a female Exo with colorful dot paint on her forehead..

When I play, I prefer to play as someone as far from me as possible. It's one of the reasons I'm invested in better representation in video games, because it allows me to play the way I want to.
Interesting. Any particular reason?

Its near that Devil Walker you meet on the way to the strike boss. Towards the back of that open area near where you enter.

I'll go have a look later.

Right now I'm checking out the Terrestrial Complex. First time I check this place, lol...

Edit: Nowhere to go on the JOVIAN COMPLEX ?
This place is so small...

you can buy different ships but they are at the moment purely cosmetic and only something you see in loading screens and when you go into orbit. There is no space combat confirmed, but I wouldn't be surprised if there will be.
I thought the more expensive ships are required to reach the more distant planets of the solar system. It makes sense that they're the gating system, preventing new characters from jumping straight into crazy mob massacres.

Well that was far more polished than I expected. Had a great time in the Alpha although I never did try out the Crucible. For some idiotic reason I thought it was just a 1v1 PVP lol.

Any word on when and how we get into the beta?

Preorder the game, register at a link on Bungie's site (I think), wait for July 17 when the beta starts.

Woot! Hopefully it goes on for a bit more when I get back from work today. My girlfriend told me she wanted to play it more even though she sucks at FPS games. She's on team Moon Wizard Dinklage. xD

Alpha extended?

raise the level cap then!

Interesting. Any particular reason?

I like fantasy. I'm a forty-four year old dude with bad knees and a head full of mixed-up wiring. Who wants to play as that? Besides, most men in video games are uber-buff male power fantasy fodder, and that just doesn't do it for me. Most video game protagonists look remarkably like the meathead douchebags that picked on me and my friends throughout school.

While video game devs could do a better job including women, they could also do a better job of including men who don't look like they just stepped out of an ad from GQ, too. The only game series in which I routinely played a guy was Tony Hawk and Skate, where I always play the same guy, regardless of the game. His name is Ahmed, he's tall and skinny, and looks nothing like me. He has been skating for me for fifteen years, though.

Shooting at an enemy then finishing him with a throwing knife when your magazine is empty feels so satisfying. I love to play as a Hunter.

Yeah, Hunter is pretty sick. Was playing Crucible last night and got into a long range war with a Titan on the moon map, neither of us had sniper rifles. Activated Golden Gun and killed him in two hits. Was not expecting that to be accurate from that range.

I hope this goes til Midnight. I do a let's play series, and the dudes I do it with aren't available to record until tonight. I don't know that Destiny is prime material for it, but man it could be fun.

There's a rumor that the #Destiny Alpha might be extended to allow dangerous experiments. Play beyond the official close at your own risk!

I'm not understanding the dangerous experiments stuff. They keep tweeting things that almost sound like new content to check out.

You and i are the only males currently playing as male characters in Destiny ;P

My character is male also. I might end up making a girl in the beta though. I couldn't find any face or hairstyle that I personally liked as a male. They are all hyper masculine faces and stupid looking haircuts.

I can jump on that train, although since the Exo are robot do they really have genders or is it just a voice change?

Someone should start a poll/thread about this... i'm very curious as when i previously saw the females in game i always just assumed they were mostly played by women. Seems like they're mostly dudes.

I'm not sure with the Exo... can a robot really be male or female? lol Ok creepy skynet thoughts...

I'll typically play as a female given the choice, but if the tools are there to make a cool looking male character then I'll go with that. Often that's not the case.

Same here. Glitches in the DkS character creation allowed for some fun males.

Went Blue skin/eye, red hair for Destiny.

There was just a thread on this. Males play as females overwhelmingly online in RPGs. I don't think I ever have if given the choice.

I'm with you on this. I just assumed when I saw a female character that a girl gamer was behind the profile. Oh how wrong I was. How am I supposed to know who to flirt with (or stalk) now?

Yeah a self aware and intelligent robot can be a male or female. They won't be a male or female in terms of sex organs, but they will be in terms of gender. It's pretty much a how you perceive yourself thing. Atleast it was something like that. I'm trying to remember sociology class haha.

Lol right!? My girlfriend and i were playing non stop this weekend and i remember she's playing her female titan character and kept meeting a bunch of other "females" online... she was super excited until i told her that probably 90% were men. She said, and i quote, "men just want to be pretty too baby" lol

Not just a question to you, but to everyone else cause I'm really curious: You're a boy, right? Why do you keep making female characters?
I think the main reason is that women just look better. Also, I'm already a man in real life, so I may as well try something different in my videogames, where I have a choice. I'm definetly not one of those people that feels like my character should resemble me or anything.

Someone mentioned the fact that women have more freedom when it comes to dressing, using make-up, etc. and it's a great point. Definetly agree with that. As a man I've always felt way too restricted when it comes to choosing the way I look. Can't even use a bit of eye-liner without people freaking out.

I thought that most female avatars actually being men in games was common knowledge. It's surprising to see so many people saying that they had no idea and being happy that so many girls are finally starting to play video games more.

Jumped back on earlier to do the Strike mission on Legend. Mission accomplished

I went back to The Tower to turn in one last bounty. Thought I might as well do one last dance number

Which is when I noticed a bunch of people in The Tower for some reason. Only ever saw 1 person in all the other times I was there. We gathered in a circle to share our fond memories of adventure

After about 10s I thought fuck this and started dancing

Yeah, I started that shit. Then I logged out

See You Space Cowboy

My other character is totally a dude

So, PvP. I...well, it needs work. I don't think the global character philosophy is really working. Part of what made Halo maps strong were the conscious choices of weapons-on-map that the designer made. Not every map should have a shotgun. Not every map should have a sniper. As it turns out, not every map should have 12 shotguns or 12 snipers, because it turns into a total disaster. Special ammo is not scarce enough to make that mechanic matter. I think the heavy ammo spawns work reasonably well, though I would prefer they were full weapon drops as well just to give the designers more flow control. You could allow carryover of primary, armor, and skills, and end up with the same "feel" of having your character matter without the negative effects of people starting with fully loaded shotguns, or someone not having a rocket launcher just because the game hasn't dropped one for them and being at a disadvantage. I think I had a whole two games with a negative K/D spread, but it's not really satisfying. Having a global character was a neat idea, but it ends up feeling like a string of deaths isn't the player's fault, but a result of the game's rules being busted - it's not really working. Unfortunately, neither are the vehicles. The Interceptor is absurdly powerful - a sort-of-rapid fire, faster, smaller Wraith? Why? It's fun to use, but certainly not fun to fight against. With the Wraith, you could dodge the first shot and have enough time to get away. Not so much here - and without having set heavy weapons spawn on the map, you might just not be equipped to ever take one out on foot. I just don't know what purpose it serves to exist. On a lighter note, I really like the gametype design. Mixing 3 Plots with Slayer results in a really nice balance of objective play and murdering, where both are rewarded really well. Excited to see the other gametypes.

This is longer than I intended it to be. I'll just end with saying that I'm very impressed with the PvE in the game. It's smart and fun in all the ways a Bungie shooter should be, with a few rough bits. I think the PvP has a lot of potential, but it's just not there yet. If they level things out a bit and try to strike more of a balance between character progression and arena gameplay, it could be a really cool thing. I'm really looking forward to the beta.

I agree wholeheartedly with your analysis of PvP. It's solid at it's core, but some of the concepts really need some reworking.

I think the lack of weapon pickups and the incredibly long grenade respawn really makes shotguns and vehicles overpowered. The specials are also a little annoying as there's just nothing you can do about them most of the time.

I think when you activate a special in MP it should have a more obvious effect to indicate to people that it's happening. A bright glow and a sound or something. This at least gives us a chance to respond or dodge.

Glad to hear you liked it, Havoc! And excellent writeup as always.
Thanks! It's been a while since I've had a chance to write anything, so it's nice to come back with a game that merits a monstrosity of a post like that.

To urk/Lars/DeeJ: Bnet truncates messages over 10000 characters, so I wasn't able to crosspost that on the feedback forum - as it turns out, I'm a crappy editor (and I forgot an entire section about the UI, at that - just let Dave and the team know that they've done an incredible job). Hopefully the right people see it over here!

The real question is just how many female gamers are now playing as male characters. It's just far to confusing for my adolescent mind.

I think by default I'll just flirt with everyone regardless of species or gender.

This has probably been talked about, but I'm pretty disappointed with how bounded and limited the environments are. Like, there are tons of places that look like you should be able to get to them, but you can't. Either there are invisible walls that prevent you from jumping up to an area you clearly should be able to reach, or there are invisible death zones that just kill you if you enter them. There are some really gorgeous vistas in this game, and the environments look massive, but it mostly just seems to be smoke and mirrors. I thought they said you would actually be able to reach any place you can see, but apparently that was BS. I knew the game wouldn't be "true" open world, but I thought it would be more open than it is.
