10 DLC characters? Hell that wouldn't ever happen! Lol.
I would get them all.
I honestly wouldn't care enough for Squirtle/Ivysaur, Snake can stay in Brawl but possibly a spiritual successor to his moveset. Also.. I want Medusa!!
This is basically me, only with Xenoblade music instead of Rhythm Heaven music. Amusing, since they're about as tonally night-and-day as you can get!
As far as some of my favorite tracks from Xenoblade, from the background music alone:
"Gaur Plains", still probably my favorite track in the game. It's somewhere between an ethnic piece, with those guitars and violins, and a disco song, with that drum beat, and it somehow just works.
"Colony 9", a great little opening-level piece. Really love that woodwind (pan flute?).
"Satorl, the Shimmering Marsh / Night", a downright beautiful piece (although its inclusion in Smash Bros. would admittedly be highly dependent on what kind of stage is in use, as it's pretty slow-paced).
"Makna Forest", which is similarly slow-paced but a little more chipper about it.
"Alcamoth, Imperial City", for something more imposing. It's also slow-paced, but the energy of that organ and the really deep bass strings might allow it to work in spite of that.
"Snowy Mt. Valak / Night", because dat piano lead. (The daytime variant is another great song, but doesn't lend itself to much outside of snowy stages; the Night variant, however, could feasibly work outside that context.)
", a surprisingly whimsical piece for a relatively-late-game stage. You'd think that
reaching the Mechonis, the giant on which your enemies reside,
would warrant something imposing, but instead we get this piece that almost sounds like it's instead celebrating the wonderment such a place would instill.
", another late-game stage that is, fittingly, equal parts intimidating and triumphant.
Then you get into the battle and cutscene music, which is a lot more obviously in line with what you'd expect to hear in a fighting game:
"Time to Fight!", which wouldn't sound out-of-place in a Kingdom Hearts game (Yoko Shimomura did both, after all; YMMV on how good/bad a thing this is).
"One Who Gets In Our Way", the game's boss theme. Designed for big encounters as it is, it'd fit in quite snugly into Smash Bros. without even needing a remix.
"You Will Know Our Names", the game's special-encounter battle theme (for unique enemies that are typically higher-level than the ones in the surrounding vicinity and drop better loot). I would be very surprised if this does not make it into Smash Bros. in some capacity, even if Shulk didn't get in.
. Generally touted as one of the game's better battle themes, and with a kicking drumline and rocking electric guitar lead like that, it's hard to disagree.
"Engage the Enemy", a cutscene track usually used when tragic shit starts getting real, might actually work in the context of a fight scene regardless. Plus, those violins, man.
"Unfinished Battle", another cutscene track that's high-enough energy to possibly work as backing music for an acutal fight.
"Tragic Decision" - okay, this one's stretching a bit, but Sakurai included "Midna's Lament", a piece that similarly opened up with a somber piano arpeggio, and made it work. At least this track gains a drumline pretty quickly, and then full-out rock guitars toward the end!
That covers a fairly wide net, and obviously is too much for one stage to hold, but I still had to deliberately omit other tracks I'm fond of in spite of that. It's seriously one of Nintendo's better soundtracks - one of the better video game soundtracks in general, really!
The only downside is that I have no idea what the hell Shulk's victory theme could be; the game doesn't really have victory music. There's short jingles for when you find landmarks scattered about the maps, but they're way too short to work as an actual victory jingle, I'd think (the secret landmark one's a bit better, but still pretty short). This is probably one of those times where the composers will have to try and work one out of, say, the game's title theme - maybe the cadence from 2:18-2:40 could be what they use? Seems a little less upbeat than most Smash victory themes, but hey, more variety I guess.
People thinking DLC characters will come in packs and at $5 a character...that seems a little wishful to me.
I'm expecting single character downloads between $10-15. Maybe pairs. Maybe 1 character and 1 stage. I'm personally hoping for a season pass like in Mario Golf so I don't even have to think about it. Definitely getting any character DLC.
imo smash needs dlc characters, stages, items or assist trophies, and most importantly balance patches after launch. Then a year or a year and a half after release they could release an ultimate smash brothers that comes with all the dlc included.
Here’s my take on DLC: “A lot more characters” were planned for Brawl, but Sakurai had to cut them due to time constraints. Presumably, based on internal references that were accidentally left on the disc, those characters were Plusle & Minun, Mewtwo, Roy, Dr. Mario, Toon Zelda/Toon Sheik, and Dixie Kong.
Curiously, none of the above characters were given significant non-playable roles in Brawl; some have trophies and stickers, but that’s it. Mewtwo, one of the most famous Pokémon of all-time, and Plusle & Minun, who had major roles in a recent film, seemed ripe for assists — but because they were intended to be playable from the start, they weren’t made into Poké Ball summons.
In the event that there are DLC characters in the new Smash Bros. games, they probably won’t be bosses, Assist Trophies, or Poké Balls. That’s just bad planning on Sakurai’s part. If Mewtwo isn’t a Poké Ball and Dixie Kong isn’t an Assist Trophy, for instance, then we can probably bet on seeing them as DLC. Conversely, if Ridley is a stage boss (which, let’s face it, he probably is), then he isn’t going to be DLC.
Woah! First I get introduced to the chorus kids for the first time by the leak, now I get introduced to Plue by talking about the chorus kids. It's just one long chain of learning
I'd rather them all be bundled at once if there are more than 2 newcomers. I think only the hardcore of the hardcore smash fans would buy more than 2-3 characters at $5 each. ESPECIALLY if they're only cut veterans.
Depends on how much they've been retooled. If they're cut veterans but have Yoshi-caliber visual makeovers and remarkably adjusted move-sets (I.E. Lucas is truly different from Ness), I'm sure the hype would be there in full force.
They could package them in a number of ways: 1) Buy a Season Pass to obtain them all at some savings; 2) Buy them individually, at $5 a piece; 3) Make options 1 and 2 available, but ultimately release a "Super" or "Ultra" edition of the game that includes them on the disk, Capcom-style.
All of this serves to keep people interested in Smash, of course. The character speculation continues, the game stays fresh with the addition of characters, new IPs receive extra attention, and Nintendo makes more money than they would creating a whole new game (10 characters at $5 each is $50, and costs a mere fraction of what it would take to develop a new game).

I think most of this comes from my difficulty trying to articulate what I want to say without it being jumbled, unspecific, missing stuff or being worded confusingly... I have the idea very clear in my head but not the words in which to say it and I often forget that some of the complexities of what I want to say aren't assumed by the other person
Perfect dlc would be a character with two alternate costumes, a stage based from their series, and two or three items/assist trophies all together for 4.99 each. There would be one "pack" a month every month for a year or a year and a half, with every "pack" being on an ultimate collection disc after all the dlc releases.

Honestly I feel that the Inklings, Henry and Wonder Red should be 'saved' for the next Smash game to be added as playable. If the former 2 are added as DLC when their games release it just comes off as marketing the games in a Playstation All-Stars kind of way (obviously not as bad since Rising Raiden and DmC Dante were added before their games even released... as well as the fact that both Capcom and Konami had better suited reps for such a game).
Don't get me wrong, they may have Smash potential but it feels too early for them to be in Smash. The DLC should be for older, more established characters if you ask me. And yes I know Roy was in Smash to promote his new game but look where that got him . Cut from Brawl and nowhere to be seen in Smash 4.
My point was that megamans final smash being used wasn't awesome, it was exciting to see it and the commentary was great but to say it was the most hype moment in smash is an insult to competitive smash imo, unless I'm misunderstanding what you meant.
I'd say I'm better at mario kart than I am in smash due to the fact that mario kart has a far lower skill ceiling, I don't find it hard to place top 3 95% of the time in a 12 player race, whereas a lot of the items in smash bros. can be incredibly over powered or just have a random chance of fucking you over even though you're the one who got the item.
When I play with my friends we don't play with items on because I don't know anyone who enjoys them anymore, whenever I did play with items on I'd just pick them up and throw them off the stage just to stop cheap shit from happening.
I dunno, I just don't find any enjoyment in throwing a pokeball and a lagendary pokemon appearing and getting the kill for me, I play fighting games to beat other players, not have something else do it for me.
My problem with MK items is that a a lot of it is unavoidable. If you don't have items your helpless, even though you have very limited defensive options to begin with (talking about MK8 specifically).
I don't feel that way in Smash. You can catch a thrown Pokeball or even knock it out of their hands- same with a Smash Ball. Sometimes you can use their reliance on items against then. Hell, some characters have reflector abilities, and are fast enough on their own to escape the affects of certain items.
I can understand the sentiment that it's more fun to do everything yourself in a fighting game, and that in a racing game it isn't much of a biggie. In Smash though, I feel like even though it evens out the playing field for less skilled players to have a chance. It doesn't completely rob good players at a fair chance of winning. Neither games do that, but I think Smash is less masochistic. Tons of things also play a factor in Smash's case such as the character, and stages.

Right, but I think only mother/smash fans would buy lucas. Your casual smash player (one that doesn't visit gaf, etc) will not. I don't even think most people would buy Ridley as DLC.
For not-so-popular characters (ones that aren't the star of their respective, popular games), they'll have to be bundled or prove a great value to players who don't care about the franchise or only play smash bros as a party game. I could be wrong, but i'm trying to gauge if some of the casual people i've played smash bros w/ could be interested in someone like Lucas or Ridley and I honestly don't think they would be.
Outside of a bundle that provides value, I don't see the majority of casual smash players buying a character from a game they've never played.

I understand your concern, but I think Roy was discontinued because he wasn't particularly distinct from Marth in the first place. Or because he didn't appear in more than one installment of a larger series, and was no longer topical thereafter.
I really think this is an opportunity to seriously promote Nintendo's two new franchises, Splatoon and Codename: STEAM. If they roll out Inklings and Henry DLC with hype trailers and make them available a month before the launch of those games, the surge in interest would surely result in more sales for those games.
And yeah, I suppose Wonder Red would be a candidate as a retroactive push for TW101, although they'd have to reclassify his trophy.

From what I've seen and experienced in my short time with the game, they seem less bullshit than Brawl. As someone who likes items, I just kept them off in Brawl because they were so annoying.
But, with a few exceptions, they don't seem so bad in Smash 4. They don't seem to kill but at higher percentages, and there's nothing like the fan or superspicy curry that you get trapped in and rack up insane damage from 0%. Plus Pokeballs and Assist Trophies are actually FUN this time. There are no Pokemon like fucking Wobbuffet and Gulpin, and the annoying assists like Devil and Nintendog seem more rare this time, with more attacking assist trophies like Dark Samus or Magnus popping out instead.
The exceptions: The Zelda beetle and the drill arm, both of which seem to be instant kills if they hit. The beetle carries you off the top of the screen, and the drill arm pulls you off the side of the screen. Fortunately, they both seem rare.
Also, Final Smashes seem toned down. Except for Fox's Landmaster, which is still complete bullshit, and Greninja's, which is an instakill if it hits, they seem to be more about dealing damage than killing at low percentages.

Would a "casual" player buy DLC at all, though? I kinda doubt they would - what's the value in it for someone who doesn't personally love the character and/or Smash Bros.?
If they make DLC they might as well cater to the SSB and Nintendo fans that they know have a good chance of buying the DLC - so making fan favorites like Ridley or more niche characters like Inklings DLC makes a decent amount of sense, especially if they package DLC in pairs ala PSASBR. Make a package with one Super Great Fan Favorite (Ridley, Waluigi, K Rool, etc) and one Totally Niche/Advertising character (Wonder Red, Inklings, Henry) for MAX PROFIT.

Not unless it's something that really stood out to them, no. It would have to be something that provided value or a character that they really really wanted. I dunno. We'll have to see.
I do see more casuals buying a newcomer over a veteran though.
Sakurai doesn't decide pricing. And the third Gematsu leak makes it sound like they'll cost money since the leaker thought Nintendo was being "greedy."

- Last E3 before game's launch (obviously)
- Participating characters: Pac-Man, Mii Fighter, Goddess Palutena, Shulk, Chrom, Chorus Men (none of these are new, obv, so I take he means these are the participating characters for E3?)
- There has been internal debate about keeping Lucas versus Ness, apparently Lucas is likely to get the cut
- Nintendo is planning post-launch character DLC, source doesn't like this as he thinks it's greedy

It makes sense from a business standpoint. People will gladly pay for newcomers in Smash. It's a guaranteed revenue stream and longevity extender for the game.
I was happy to see that I could turn it off when I first played Brawl. After playing Melee (and PM and Brawl) more I've grown used to it. I can't short hop double laser without it, nor can I up-B or up-Smash out of shield.

If Nintendo's smart, they'll focus all their dlc around cross promoting future games. Smash is one of their mainstream franchises that could easily be leveraged to promote future titles. The first round of dlc should definitely be returning veterans or fan favorites but after that, they should focus on new characters in new games. Think of how much more attention X would get if there was a dlc smash character coinciding with launch, or Splatoon, or a Yoshi Yarn skin/stage/etc.
The leaker says it's coming. I mean, you don't have to believe the leaker, but I'm inclined to think he'll be right.
Like Mario Golf: World Tour, the core game is already a complete package, in and of itself. And like Mario Golf: World Tour, I can see them introducing a season pass and DLC featuring new characters, on the premise that they believe the fanbase will buy additional content for the game, and it will keep the game going, and open up an additional revenue stream.
Potential revenue streams are nothing Nintendo should take for granted right now.
Oh god I just listened to Munchy Monk music on youtube and it all came back, I didn't play the game in 2-3 years and I was able to nail the entire song from memory, I'm not ready for Rhythm Tengoku music in Smash

How about Elma for Xenoblade Chronicles X (being a key "non-avatar" character), Henry for Codename: STEAM, and Inklings for Splatoon?
Just roll them out alongside each game's release in 2015. Then release the "Super Street Fighter IV" update for Smash at the end of 2015, featuring all of the DLC on disk.
I half-suspect a Super-style update is what was accidentally listed on a hiring list as SSB6, although that could be a typo for a new Soulcalibur.

Okay, I'm trying to imagine how familiar Nintendo has become with DLC lately, and I need you guys to fill the blanks a bit.
I know Nintendo released a crap ton of extra levels in NSMB2. I downloaded some of these myself. I can't recall if the prices were appropriate for the content though.
I know Nintendo recently had some healthy DLC for Mario Golf. Was the price worth it?
Pikmin 3 had some DLC as well but I didn't even look at it at all.
Other than that, I'm drawing a blank as far as Nintendo DLC goes. I'm assuming Mario Kart 8 isn't getting any. Else we would have seen it at E3.

Hey, I've been lurking here for a while but I have to ask, why do some of you think Nintendo is going to release a "super" version with all DLC on the disc when Nintendo has yet to do it for their own games like Fire Emblem Awakening and New Super Mario Bros. 2. The only exception I can think of is NSMBU+NSLU.
The leaker says it's coming. I mean, you don't have to believe the leaker, but I'm inclined to think he'll be right.

Additional courses in mario golf or additional tracks in mario kart are different than a new playable character. Anyone who wants 'more content' will buy a track or a course. Not everyone will buy a dlc fighting game character, especially if they don't care for the franchise they represent or if they THINK the character is a clone (like Lucas - not saying he's a clone, but some people feel that he is).
I think the potential customers are way less for an unpopular character than for 'more tracks' or 'more courses' like mario kart/golf. You need to provide value to the consumer if you want to sell them a character they don't necessarily care about. A season pass, a bundle, extra modes (buy lucas and get the all-new boss for classic mode!), etc. will help sell unpopular characters.
Fire Emblem Awakening had reams and reams and REAMS of DLC
Also, MK8 has free DLC coming this summer: The Mercedes GLA. I wouldn't be surprised if paid DLC in the form of new tracks and characters will follow. The game has a huge install basis (relative to other games on the system) and if they're willing to tap a game like Pikmin 3, they'll definitely think about tapping MK8.
