There's a reason NBA, NCAAF, NHL, and NCAAB are moving their post seasons from network to cable, including championship games that are some of the most watched games of all sports in the US. It's 2014. The difference between network and ESPN here is negligible.

And yet network TV still dominates cable in the ratings (overall, Game of Thrones and Walking Dead are two data points). Compare SNF ratings with MNF ratings.

Fact is, more people have access to and watch network TV, period.

While it is huge news that the US drew such a large rating for the game last night, I don't think it's going to be enough to get people to watch MLS or wake up early to watch the EPL on a weekly basis in August.

I think if the US does well enough it could give the MLS the boost it needs. And if the MLS can get a good enough leg up it should be able to buy better players, show better soccer, get more viewers, buy better players, show better soccer, get more viewers...

I'm hoping that the US can get out of the group stage and then win like one more game. That ought to be enough to give the MLS a decent boost.
