Yeah. I really hope Klinsmann adjusts our attacking formation somehow to account for losing Altidore. Once he went down, the attack mostly fell apart, and I wouldn't see that changing much against Portugal if we keep the same lineup (but playing Johannson, of course). I almost want to see Zusi starting to give us a better possession game, though I don't know who he would replace without sacrificing a lot of defense.

I guess it will also help the US attack if Bradley plays at least mediocre rather than terrible. The main creative force in the midfield needs to connect on passes.

At least Portugal looks like a bunch of individuals playing on the same field like they usually do.

Yes, they need to adjust for Altidore being out. Honestly, he was the person we could least afford to lose. If we'd lost Altidore prior to the roster being finalized, I'm pretty sure that Donovan would be on the team right now.

But with Altidore being out, I expect these next few days of practice to be interesting and for them to iron out who is going to be the starter there and for whoever that is to hopefully gain some confidence. Johannson just looked lost last night. I don't think he made any impact on the pitch. He could very well be our striker of the future, but I don't know if he's our striker of the present.

Though last night we were leaving so many guys back for defense he wasn't getting any support so it's not completely fair to dismiss him, also it was one match that he wasn't prepared for.

Bradley has to perform better and I think he's going to need to come up more with Altidore out, and Dempsey has to play out of his mind. Fabian Johnson had a really quiet game, need him to step up on setpieces. Zusi did really nice with what he had to do last night, but like you mentioned, I don't know that he's the defensive player we need as a starter.

Where abouts in USA does soccer get the most attention? i dont think i remember you guys being that hyped for soccer sports a decade ago. Glad ya'll changed :)

The US cities that have MLS teams are typically hotbeds for it and have American Outlaw chapters in each one, I'd guess. So Portland, Chicago, Columbus, New York, etc.

Watched the World Cup 4 years ago and it was fairly big then, but the hunger this time around is much, much different. Before it was much more of a hipster like thing to watch. Now you have those people, but you also have your average Joes watching that watch all the typical sports. The World Cup always draws a ton of eyes here, but it's undoubtedly much more now and each time a percentage of those people stick around with the sport and start following it more throughout the years.

Basically, from my perspective, sports jocks are now tuning in.

@Ourand_SBJ: USA-Ghana did a 14.4 in NYC on ESPN/Univision combined. The average of all Jets/Giants games last season in NY was 14.1 across FOX/CBS/NBC.

Futbol beating football? Imagine that.

Bro, the Giants were so ridiculously bad last year. Remember 0 and 6.

Once in a four year tournament for NATIONAL teams outdraws regular season game.

News at 11.

That sounds correct. There is also Aron Johansson, who was born in the US, but was very much eligible (and played a lot at the youth level) for Iceland.

Of course, there are several players with strong US ties playing for other teams, so it evens out in the long run.

funny we talked about this last night and ESPN ran a story about all the german born/relationship players on the USA team today.

Did not know they had some kid from Bayern Munich on the team though hopefully he lives up to potential. For all the shit many USA fans gave for the hiring of Klinnsman I think he's done a fantastic job with getting young talent on the team.

Its a big fucking deal.

Youll also note the game made the cover of both the NYT and Wall Street Journal.

Last tournament they were too busy running editorials on how everyone hates soccer, and putting an AP blurb on page 39.

This, by the way, is a tournament that Disney feels doesnt deserve to be on ABC buts gets bumped off to cable.

RE: ABC not showing any USA game because theyre anti-american terrorists

@BRUBromley: 7.0 overnight rating for USA-Ghana on ESPN; 6.8 for the NBA Finals Game 5 on ABC #usmnt #worldcup

This doesnt include Univision

If anything this just proves they're either US hating terrorists or soccer hating terrorists

And that NBA game was on a Sunday night AND on network tv as opposed to the US game being on primetime only on one time zone, on a Monday night and that was cable! Why ABC refuses to broadcast Sunday's US game? That's insane.

.

Good to see Boston up there. Hopefully this will spur the Krafts into getting a soccer specific stadium built.
LOL, as if soccer's popularity level is what's keeping the Krafts from building a stadium in Boston... People have known a central T-accessible location would be a success for years...

I'm not sure that's more about ABC being afraid of the ratings, or that ABC is trying to funnel their viewers to ESPN. ESPN's really viable as a sports network, while the NBCSports channel barely gets any viewers.

No it isn't. You are a NJ Devils fan, how many Islander and Rangers games do you watch a season?

That's not the point. Soccer is the 5th most popular sport. Football is #1 by a wide margin. It's news that this game beats football in any aspect. Who thought this would've happened 10 years ago?

Belgium's bench is crazy.... amazing. I really hope they do well I'm a fan of alot of their players.... they and Croatia are my favorite underdogs of this tournament...... we'll see what they do.

I think it's inevitable that the U.S. will win a World Cup within the next 30 years. The sport is gaining a lot of popularity here and more and more parents will put there kids into soccer.

We're a country of 300 Million with the possibility of the best training and facilities in the world.

BTW how did China a country of 1 Billion not make the World Cup?

Ask Yao Ming.
China is superior in sports where drills and self-focus are keys to victory. With the exception of volleyball, China is lacking in sports with big emphasis on teamplay and creativity. Yao Ming recognizes this obvious fact and even has spoken about it in a german interview. I'm not sure if he has told to the officials though, because he implicitly criticizes the system which doesn't allow kids to think creatively.

It's stupid to complain that the game is on ESPN instead of ABC. It's 2014. I mean seriously.

Sports are trying to get away from the network channels and going towards the cable ones. Soccer is no different here and it'll help giving it long pre and post game shows not always possible on network tv to help expose the ins and outs of it to those new to the game.

ESPN has cut away from every game ASAP once it ends, they dont to post game show...

And yet, Univision has no issue providing very long pre and post games on network TV.

Its no surprise that Univision, on free TV, draws more viewers for every game.

I believe the Giants and Jets get the 30 and 31 out of 32 teams in their market ratings as they cannibalize each other. Jets fans don't watch Giants games, Giants fans don't watch Jet games, especially after a year where the Giants were horrific.

The sport is getting more popular no one is denying that, but using this as a metric is moronic.

It's funny in America you guys(I'd say we but I no longer live in America, I live in Spain only here for vacation in the USA for the moment) get more "free games" for the World cup then in other countries. In other countries, for instance Spain, outside of a few games here and there most games are on pay per view channels so....... yeah I don't see the reason for the complaints either lol

Do Algeria have anything or are they whipping boys?

While it is huge news that the US drew such a large rating for the game last night, I don't think it's going to be enough to get people to watch MLS or wake up early to watch the EPL on a weekly basis in August.

Why is Zlatan Ibrahimovic on my TV so much and why is his CG character wearing a PSG jersey while all the other characters are wearing their national team jerseys? Is this explained in the film?
