This is true.

If his arms are like wide open tho, even if it's not intentional, most referees will call a penalty as the defender is using his arms to increase his "block-area".

I don't think that was the case.

I don't know if it's an unwritten or an actually written rule, but it's usually required in those situations that his hands be in an "unnatural" position, which the Dutch defender's hands certainly were not. They were low and at his side. I think a similar penalty shout for the exact same thing was already not given in a match this week.

Ronaldo sitting out to avoid tarnishing his legacy with an embarrassing loss / tie to the US.

He'll always be the second best Ronaldo.

aussies should be disappointed, they had such a perfect chance for the third but they let netherlands score such a weak effort instead

If the players hand is away from their body and it prevents a chance then sure.

lol

You want players with their hands tied to their backs? Because running means you have to wave your arms around. It was at a close distance so the defender can't magically dodge the ball.

Oh well, at least we made a game out of it when everyone thought we would get spanked 5-0.

Great game to watch, well done to the Dutch.

Australia were always going to struggle in this group, but they did themselves proud today.

If they were in an easier group, they would have had a good chance of reaching the knockout stage.

The ball was struck against his arm, he did not place his arm intentionally to impede play.

Rules are rules.

Please show me those rules, because last time the rules changed, i'm pretty sure it was when the arm is not against the body and it touches the ball, gaining advantage even if unintentional, is enough to warrant a penalty.

Watch the replay; his arm was trailing nearly a foot behind him and impeded the cross. It was always going to be a penalty.

Terrible terrible performance from our team. You fought well Socceroos! I was almost rooting for you guys. Such a pitty to see you leave the cup. Any other poule and you might have made it.

It was a penalty because it prevented a scoring opportunity for Australia (a cross). Plus, his hand wasn't near his body. Doesn't matter if it wasn't intentional.

I think Holland deserved it. We could've scored an extra few, even in the very end with Lens. We still looked fit. But the first half was absolutely awful due to our 5-3-2 formation that didn't work against a team like Australia.

Australia fought like lions, them being eliminated is unfortunate. Enjoyed them.

Unlucky Australia. Wonder if there's any interest in your manager, you equipped yourselves very well in both matches.

Ref should have given you time to take that last throw since there was a reasonably long free kick preperation during the stoppage time.

Disallowed goal, wrong
Pelanty, wrong
Cancel eachother out innit bruv

We got away with a lot of bullshit that game, but it at least serves as a wakeup call. Sneijder and De Vrij can't start, it's just been bad for two games. De Guzman and Janmaat have also been completely invisible but maybe some changes can improve those 2.

Australia easily deserved a point there, they put up a great fight. So many bad passes, stupid fouls and bad defending on our side, it's a small miracle we won.

I added some more to my post. You'll notice a lot of players cross their hands to avoid this.

It's the same as if you jumped andbit hit your hand. Most people don't jump like penguins but that doesn't excuse the fact it might hit your arm.
