Driveclub Eurogamer Preview

Also, the dynamic driver assist is kind of a lame system IMO. Basically, if you're a good driver the assists with automatically lower themselves as you drive. If you keep crashing into walls, ABS, traction control, and stability will turn up to try and make the game easier. This is said to be in the game in order to rubber-band the players, ensuring that the race is as close for everyone as the game can allow without slowing down the person in 1st place.

Oh! Can I get a source for dynamic assists? Don't remember coming across that piece before.

Let's not do this. He's played it, most of us haven't and he seems to be a big sim racer fan, which might explain why he found the handling poor.

What are you talking about? I couldn't care less about his opinion on Driveclub, I'm criticizing/joking the fact that he judged driving mechanics from a youtube video.

The dynamic assist system was explained to me in person. I had to ask about it, too. I asked about whether or not players will be able to change assists manually and then he explained the dynamic system to me. I would hope and imagine I'm not the only source for that.

I see what they're trying to do but it seems like it punishes you for getting better. Just let me manually disable handicaps so I know what my settings are at!!

That makes no sense in multiplayer. I've tweeted Rushy about it. Let's see if we can get an official response. I searched online and haven't come across a source so far. I can't imagine good drivers being happy about that, if it's true.

EDIT: As I think about it more, I find it very very hard to believe. Leaderboards would stop making sense altogether. I really (want to) believe you have been given wrong information. Was it an Evo employee or some volunteer?

It doesn't even make sense to have the actual *gameplay* adapt on the fly as you drive.

You will have to adjust how you approach every corner based on something you can't even tell is activated or not? So your ABS will adjust 5 seconds before taking a turn that you prepared and had the right speed for?

I don't get it.

Use your twitter account to ask that, because the game changing the play variables outside your control and without transparency is the death of competitive racing.

This game is all about challenges and if there are hidden variables that change all that stuff then what's the point?

Yeah I updated my post with similar thoughts. It breaks the game and the competitive spirit. The only people who can enjoy that are terrible racers. I'm almost certain this piece of info is false.

That would be my follow up tweet if they confirm it's true. Don't want to start raising red flags based on an unofficial comment on the show floor.

That actually sounds awesome. I spin out like a motherfucker on GT, so have to turn on assists, but turning on assists doesn't give me a chance to get better at the game, because im forming bad habbits based around the assists. Having them dynamically turn off when you're doing good is smart.

I'd assume you can turn it off.

You can't. Rushy already confirmed that there is only one assist that you can control, and that's for steering wheels. Which is why none of this "dynamic assist" stuff makes sense.

But he said it's relative to other racers. So if you start behind, you will have assists on, and then as you become better at the game it will keep adjusting driving assists on the fly as you pass other racers or your current position changes.

That makes no sense.

The lighting looks off in the top gif, older build?

Forza Horizon 2 looks good, but either the lighting or the color palette is making the game feel a little cartoonish in it's visuals. Can't wait for Driveclub though, will be my definitive racing game of this year, has anyone in GAF got their hands on Driveclub at E3? And if yes, did you play using Dualshock4, did the controls and overall racing experience feel good on the controller? That's all I care about.

Uh if the dynamic driver assist thing is real, consider me one less customer.

One of the best things about racing games is learning your cars strengths and weaknesses and using that knowledge to get better with the car and post faster lap times. The dynamic system would throw all that out the window, you cant learn a car if the damn thing changes from second to second.....who would ever think this would be a good idea?

It takes you longer than 45 minutes to decide if you like the handling in a driving game? Did you ever play arcades in the 90s? Must have cost you a fortune just to decide if you liked the game or not.

missing the forest for the trees, blood, in your hasty attempt to belittle me :)

No offense, but I'll wait until we hear it from a credible source regarding dynamic assists.

It's incredibly unfair to the game and its creators otherwise.

Unbelievable. Glad I didn't jump to conclusions.

BOOM.gif?

This is the only assist that exists in the game, it's something that Rushy has mentioned in the past as a feature to help those new to racing wheels

When playing with a wheel, there's an extra assist in place that can be switched off - without it, DriveClub can become a savage, hard-to-tame beast.

It sounded completely out of line with what they're attempting, everyone being on a level playing field and all. Hence why you can't tune your cars. Glad for confirmation though!

a year delay but photo mode and weather are post launch content. wth.

I beg your pardon? Has this been confirmed that we're getting Photo Mode?

I think there were probably other elements that were crucial needing to be worked on, as well as just getting the game much more polished. That being said, weather is still in the first couple of months after launch.

glad we got that cleared up....

(do want a dynamic assist system tho. Driveclub not being a sim will probably help.
would be cool if GT7 included something like that, optional of course.)

Wait........Weather is in a update to come later???

Side note: one thing that bugs me when watching some E3 videos is nothing happens when you crash or ram something at a high rate of speed. You just kinda bounce off and keep going. No screen indication or nothing. Now I don't know if those were just old builds but just seems like something that's really missing.

DriveClub,|OT| It's just a waste of resources.
Thought the official OT was,
DRIVECLUB |OT| ALWAYS BOLD, ALWAYS CAPITAL
I'm expecting that OT to be one of the best OT in the history of GAF, especially since the games style guide was revealed in a competition.
All they've said is that it'll be released shortly after launch.
Seriously, I can't get over your avatar.
It's a sad world when we can't agree that "shortly" means less than 2 months... If we were to use inFamous as precedent, it should be within a month. But seriously, Sucker Punch says that their engine handles all of that (and they subsequently just patched it in), seemingly like Driveclub and Rushy's build where he can apparently just pause it and go 2 kilometers up. And SP also s

Not confirmed, but hinted at.

It's all enough to make you pine for a photo mode, though that's something being considered for inclusion post-release right now. The drip-feed of features such as the weather - which is due soon after launch, and sometime before Christmas - are all helpful in establishing the idea of DriveClub as a constantly evolving service, and it speaks of a developer enjoying the breathing space the delay has granted it.

Let me follow up with the guy I spoke to at E3. It wasn't just a booth person. I was in the private press area with a member of the development team. I'd be extremely glad if the dynamic system isn't in the game, but he spent 3 minutes explaining it to me. It certainly wasn't something I misinterpreted.

What's the story with thief?

Playing through Thief on PS4 and Xbox One over the past week I'm not so sure 1080p on consoles is a standard that should be set for next-gen. The PS4 version struggles needlessly to try to maintain a 30 frames per second presentation, regularly dipping into the 15-20 range during gameplay. At several points in the journey, it even edges toward the single digits.

What makes this particularly controversial is the Xbox One version does a much better job of maintaining a steady framerate. I'd go as far as to say because of this, the Xbox One version is better.

So how is it that Thief on Xbox One is able to do this? Well, the short answer is 900p. It's displayed at a lower resolution, requiring roughly 660,000 fewer pixels per image to be rendered. However, the visual clarity would make you think the six-digit figure is in no way accurate. The truth is that's due to diminishing returns. Between 900p and 1080p the images don't look nearly as different as going from the standard definition output of 480i up to 720p. Surprisingly, the pixel difference is the same.

meanwhile at eurogamer:

Each version is guilty of genuine frame-rate drops too, especially when traversing main roads in The City. This manifests more aggressively on Microsoft's platform, where drops down to 20fps are possible, as compared to 25fps on PS4.

he goes on to say that "in the future I won't make claims without supporting evidence," yet does exactly that about DC's "dynamic driver assist" feature.

While I adore that they are going into such ridiculous detail, I do hope that some of these things have a tangible effect on gameplay.

Also, this game NEEDS a photo mode.

Quoted for posterity's sake.

Whoever this 'guy' is, I hope you find his name. Without that, this is miscommunication at best and misinformation at worst. Neither places you in good light when you represent a gaming website.

never.

you think they made these environments up to 200km large just to plonk some 20km tracks in them? the track creator is happening.

driveclub will be showed off in its full glory at gamescom. track creation is the future and rushy knows this.

Haha! I guess I tried. You are on your own for now. Whenever you decide that you need a virtual hug, I'll be there for you :P

I know exactly who it is. I just need to find out if this is something canceled during production or if maybe I was never supposed to say something about it to begin with.

Agreed. I for one would support removing 3d models completely and replacing them with flat boxes. Keep the game pure.
I agree... they can render the whole thing in 100p and up the fps to 700. Graphics are for casuals, keep it pure and hardcore to the bone! ;)

But seriously, can't wait to see this game in action.
