Are you even having fun with gaming?

Something I've been thinking about the past few years. I saw this today.

"turbulent weather rolls in, skies thickening before bursting onto the roads. Crowds at the side of the track reach for their macs and umbrellas, winds tug at the trackside scenery while puddles form in the divots and dips of the road surface,"

"The heat from the sun dynamically melts the snow, with northern-facing surfaces reacting first."

and ppl seem to be losing their shit. Then there's No Sky Man game i checked out and ppl are going nuts for it, yet no one really knows how it plays. I was at a side chicks house last weekend and invited my boy over to cotch. He brought his PS4 and was eager to show me games like infamous and killzone. He was taking close ups of walls n shit and showing me excitedly.

But all this shit, at the end of the day just seems like people are playing games (GAF and enthusiasts) to be impressed on a technical/art level than having fun.

Take a step back for a min n really see if you're having fun with the games u play.

If not, you have the wrong hobby lol.

Some games aren't ONLY fun tho (e.g. Horror Games, competitive games etc).

I have fun looking at something that looks good.

To the people that talk about graphics and how they don't matter at all: does that apply to other mediums for you? Movies? TV?

I'm pretty cynical about a lot of things but I usually like the games I play. Sometimes, if i'm playing for too long, a game can really overstay it's welcome and then my fun level depreciates until I take a hiatus. Take mario kart 8 for example, by the end of 3 starring all the grand prix tracks, I don't even want to look at that game anymore.

I ask myself this frequently. The answer I seem to keep coming up with is, "sometimes."

It takes a really good game to keep me playing these days. Graphics can be utterly mediocre (Demon's Souls and Deadly Premonition, for example) so long as the game itself is interesting.

I do when I have the time to. I still have fun and its a good time waster for myself. Kind of reminds me of my friend who had this same conversation after e3, he was so upset with gaming, he even said indies were shit, but when I bought him child of light he shut up instantly, even though he just argued that no games could make him want to play anymore.

it's so integrated in my routine and life in general that I somtimes wonder this too

then I just stop for a few days and come back and have fun till I get to that point again

feels normal

I enjoy games that are artistically impressive. Chances are I'll have a better time playing a mediocre game with great art than a mechanically amazing game with bad art.

But regardless, If I stop having fun with a game I drop it. I don't feel guilty about it. I then move onto the next one and enjoy it for however long that lasts.

People were excitedly staring at and pointing out how "realistic" small signs in SNES games looked when they had 5 squiggly lines representing words rather than 5 pixels of the NES games beforehand. This happens every generation I believe. It may be exacerbated a bit this generation because we spent nearly an entire decade with 2005 technology that held everything under the sun back.

It's my life. I work to pay bills and buy games. Nothing is better than spending a weekend living in the world of a great game. Fallout, Portal, Uncharted, Demons Souls, I can spend hours living in their world and leaving my crappy one behind.

that just sounds sad

Always.

I always find games that interest me. Right now though it's definitely not console gaming but indie games.

Some people have fun with the technical aspects. Others the presentation. Some the gameplay. In the end it's up to the person to find what they like and enjoy it. Don't follow what other people say, take the time to find what you like and go from there.

Yes, a freeMufasa thread.

You can be interested in how it looks and still have fun with it. I do feel like there's a bit too big of a focus on graphics though. But hey, whatever gets you excited, who am I to tell you not too.

I find myself playing less than I used to, but I'm still having a ton of fun when I do play, whether it's by myself or with my friends.

I was in a bit of a gaming rut until I got Second Son the other day. Ended up playing it for like six hours straight. Can't remember the last time I did something like that.

The game itself isn't spectacular, but it's fun and functional. It also looks nice. Solid 8/10 imo.

Makes you feel like a superhero! I'm about 60% completion thus far, hopefully will find iah on Friday.

Right now I can say I am having fun. I've been playing Mario Kart 8 with my brother who has been trying to get all 3 stars for each cup and nothing's funnier than accidentally denying him his perfect run right at the end. We try to work together against the CPU but sometimes our teamwork just isn't great. LOL

You bet your sweet apple I am, PSP/PSVita/3DS/DS alone keeps me occupied for weeks. That doesn't mention all the older generation games I replay (and discovering new old gen games at that). I can also play an entire segment of games on PC without ever paying a dime. I'm" having a lot of fun; it's the main reason I play video games.

Of course! I played Sounds Shapes and Super Stardust in bed last night and it was FANTASTIC!

I was at a side chicks house last weekend and invited my boy over to cotch.
I have no idea what this sentence is but I want to. Help please?

Games that I have the most fun are with playing with people online who talk and joke around. That is when I truly think: "this is what gaming is"

I'm having more fun shooting Nazis with less than perfect textures than I was getting my 4k texture mods to work in Skyrim.

Visuals help, but I think some people put too much stock in them.

Feel me for a sec:

What if that is what they find fun about games? "Fun" doesn't necessarily have to come from your interactions with the mechanics. Exploring a strange, beautiful world can be enjoyable and rewarding in its own right.

its my second job.

kidding, but yeah of course. Otherwise i wouldn't play them. I don't get hung up on framerates and resolution, still rocking last gen and handhelds.

I became completely disinterested in games around this time last year. (The same thing happened with movies years prior to that). I recently played Portal 2, and now I'm remembering why I started playing games in the first place. However, I'm not as interested as before. This E3 did not make me look forward to any new title, and I'm having trouble trying to get through more of an hour of The Last of Us at a time.

I'm just trying older and indie titles to spend my "dead" days during the summer.

Yes, I play games that I enjoy (like metal gear rising, watch dogs, far cry 3). Others I just ignore and move on from. Some have good gameplay, some have good graphics and others I play for the story.

Still play Smash Bros. Melee sometimes. Pure fun :-)

Newer games are still fun (only reason I still play), but sometimes parts do feel like a chore (Mexico in RDR comes to mind).

Yes.

i'm playing old games. Not that new ones aren't fun I'm sure they are. I just haven't the money for PS4's and Xbox's

I'm playing Monster Monpiece in my lunch breaks since everyone is watching the soccer matches. I enjoy it.

But, when I get home I have been enjoying painting my warhammer 40k armies :)

I play less bow but still have fun. A lot of people on neogaf sure doesn't seem like having fun though. They like arguing over sales, number of pixels, and things like that more I feel, than actually playing games.

I feel this is a very dumb question, Like do you enjoy reading books watching movies? Everything is relative, i cant stand single player games while my heart races with excitment over a match of Starcraft 2 or Titanfall. People like the idea of No man sky let them be who they are and do what you love.
