So until last week I had never seen a single anime in my entire life. I can't name a single one other than Dragon Ball Z. Never had anything against anime or anything, just never really paid attention to them or went out of my way to check it out.
But a long while ago (pretty sure on this site) I stumbled on a thread about Attack On Titan when it was first coming out or in production. Thought the concept looked pretty cool, and read that it was supposed to be 'the best' anime ever, or you know, a modern classic. Anyway time passed forgot about it, whatever.
Then somehow was browsing Amazon and saw that the first season just released on Blu Ray early June. So figured what the fuck and bought it on a whim.
HOLY SHIT, that is some grade A, intense ass shit. I don't want to get into it too much as that's not what this thread is about, but basically I'm now totally sold on anime now in general, and am really excited to check out some others. And I'm stoked about the fact that there is this whole world of stuff to watch, and I haven't even begun to scratch the surface. I've played almost every good game, watched almost every good movie / tv show, read a lot of good books, but haven't watched a lot of good anime. So that's pretty sweet.
So animeGAF, please recommend some other anime series I should get into. I imagine there are a billion different kinds, so I'll try to put in what I feel like I'm looking for so you guys can fill in the blanks.
1. Mature-leaning themes / not for kids - Was a little worried at the beginning of Attack on Titan because Eren is such a whiny mother fucker through the first few episodes. Fortunately he grows up into a true badass. Doesn't need to be super violent or hardcore or anything, but not really looking for Saturday morning cartoon type stuff
2. Newish / Big-budget / high production value - I feel like AoT set the bar pretty high for me in this regard so I hope it's not all downhill from here or anything. Remember that I don't have any nostalgic connections to anything, so unfortunately I feel like it might be hard for me to get into some old corny 80's show. It's like Battlestar Galactica. If you only watched the remake, going back to the original is like wut. That said, it's mostly hand drawn cartoons so maybe I don't know wtf I'm talking about and the early shit is just as good.
3. Shorter-ish? Anime movies? - My GF's friend recommended Bleach to us (good recommendation?). But then I looked it up and it's like 350 epiodes (!). So not sure if I can commit to something that long. I don't mind getting into a longer series but would like to be able to realistically finish a series without going full balls out.
So anyway I guess that's a start. The above is just loose preferences; not married to them or anything. If there are 'holy grail' animes that are considered the best of the best classics, I'll check them out anyway.
So, go
EDIT: If you guys could just add line about what the show is about or why it's good that'd be helpful. I'm not sure if I'm ready for the onslaught of options I'm about to be served with.
EDIT 2: You guys are awesome. Got my work cut out for me. Someone asked if I minded subtitles and I don't mind, subs are fine
