So until last week I had never seen a single anime in my entire life. I can't name a single one other than Dragon Ball Z. Never had anything against anime or anything, just never really paid attention to them or went out of my way to check it out.

But a long while ago (pretty sure on this site) I stumbled on a thread about Attack On Titan when it was first coming out or in production. Thought the concept looked pretty cool, and read that it was supposed to be 'the best' anime ever, or you know, a modern classic. Anyway time passed forgot about it, whatever.

Then somehow was browsing Amazon and saw that the first season just released on Blu Ray early June. So figured what the fuck and bought it on a whim.

HOLY SHIT, that is some grade A, intense ass shit. I don't want to get into it too much as that's not what this thread is about, but basically I'm now totally sold on anime now in general, and am really excited to check out some others. And I'm stoked about the fact that there is this whole world of stuff to watch, and I haven't even begun to scratch the surface. I've played almost every good game, watched almost every good movie / tv show, read a lot of good books, but haven't watched a lot of good anime. So that's pretty sweet.

So animeGAF, please recommend some other anime series I should get into. I imagine there are a billion different kinds, so I'll try to put in what I feel like I'm looking for so you guys can fill in the blanks.

1. Mature-leaning themes / not for kids - Was a little worried at the beginning of Attack on Titan because Eren is such a whiny mother fucker through the first few episodes. Fortunately he grows up into a true badass. Doesn't need to be super violent or hardcore or anything, but not really looking for Saturday morning cartoon type stuff

2. Newish / Big-budget / high production value - I feel like AoT set the bar pretty high for me in this regard so I hope it's not all downhill from here or anything. Remember that I don't have any nostalgic connections to anything, so unfortunately I feel like it might be hard for me to get into some old corny 80's show. It's like Battlestar Galactica. If you only watched the remake, going back to the original is like wut. That said, it's mostly hand drawn cartoons so maybe I don't know wtf I'm talking about and the early shit is just as good.

3. Shorter-ish? Anime movies? - My GF's friend recommended Bleach to us (good recommendation?). But then I looked it up and it's like 350 epiodes (!). So not sure if I can commit to something that long. I don't mind getting into a longer series but would like to be able to realistically finish a series without going full balls out.

So anyway I guess that's a start. The above is just loose preferences; not married to them or anything. If there are 'holy grail' animes that are considered the best of the best classics, I'll check them out anyway.

So, go

EDIT: If you guys could just add line about what the show is about or why it's good that'd be helpful. I'm not sure if I'm ready for the onslaught of options I'm about to be served with.

EDIT 2: You guys are awesome. Got my work cut out for me. Someone asked if I minded subtitles and I don't mind, subs are fine

clannad and clannad after story is the greatest anime series of all time. no piece of media has ever made me feel in such a way.

what was that kinda recent show about super heroes business with the dad lead? always forget that name, but that was a pretty decent 'mature' show.

no recommendation of gintama?

thats pretty much the simpsons of anime, if every eps was s1-s8 quality, with some random super badass shounen arcs.

What first post said, minus Evangelion. Can't appreciate deconstructions if you don't know what they're deconstructing.
Add:
Steins;Gate (Contains minor amounts of JAPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN)
Fate/Zero

Lucky star
Welcome to NHK
K-ON!
Angel Beats
Cowboy Behop
Full metal Alchemist
Akira
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Ghost in t
FLCL
soul eater
Spice wolf
all Ghibli films
Evangelion
Beck
Speed Grapher
Tri gun

OP do you have Crunchyroll account? If not I can give a 48-hour Crunchyroll All-Access Guest Pass in order to watch all the anime in their collection commercial free.

I always recommend Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist to people just getting into anime. FMA Brotherhood is still the peak of anime for me personally.

Ghibli movies as well.

Code Geass

Death Note

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Hellsing Ultimate

Cowboy Behop

Those are the best.
Seconding Death Note (S1 only), FMA:B, and Evangelion.

Hunter x Hunter is also really good and available free online at Crunchyroll, but definitely is a bit of a slow starter (and is also better if you're familiar with the genre tropes it's screwng with.)

And you know what? Try Bleach. (But look up which arcs are filler and thus skippable.)

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Top quality story line, animation, music. I only watched it last summer but it's definitely in my top 3.

Black Lagoon (English dub). Really good, action packed, fast paced. Here's a clip so you can see for yourself.

No love for Berserk up in here? Goddam.

I recommend watching the Berserk anime series. 25 episodes.

Watch the 3 movie adaptations if you want a little more, but it covers the same content.

I liked the series more than the movies.

Read the manga.

Pray you don't die before the story has it's end.

It takes place in a medieval type setting. It's mainly about a young man that joins a mercenary group. Dark, gritty, violent, mature.

hmmm I will have to think about what to recommend, but I would like to point out if you bought attack on titan from amazon, and that is all you watched of attack on titan you only managed to watch half of it. The second half will release sept 23rd or will slowly be aired on adult swim.(or you could likely watch it in japanese with subtitles on either funimation.com, hulu.com, or crunchyroll.com I am to lazy to check which it is on but I know it's on netflix oddly enough) (their trailer for season 2 which contains one semi big spoiler (what the second half is dealing with) and a couple very minor spoilers... but overall I wouldn't say would actually ruin anything major from the second half.)

also... Myanimelist.net is a great resource for trying to find other anime... if you look up attack on titan and press the recommendations tab you can see what other users recommend based on enjoying that show (some are better than others, but in general the ones with a decent number of user recommendations (which you can see below each one) are decent recommendations.)

that would have been tiger and bunny most likely... a surprisingly good show that gets surprisingly serious after you get into it.

I say surprisingly a lot because the premise is a bit.... cheesy or something.... yeah...

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Ignore all other suggestions. FMA:B is a great gateway anime, it has a bit of everything and a ton of great characters. It's mature, gripping and the story is quite well written.

Someone new to anime won't get the references from Gintama.

Evangelion and Hellsing Ultimate are musts.

*Ahem* Gurren Lagann has a really high animation budget and is generally really fun.

Kuroko no Basket. Hype ass basketball anime, not the most mature as it's about Japanese high school basketball, but there's some great animation and is generally entertaining throughout.

Nichijou is the least nature and serious thing possible but should be watched by everyone.

s-CRY-Ed is also really good and does deal with some serious stuff.

Planetes, obviously

I love you.

OP:
Ghost in The Shell - Both the movies & the anime are great.
Last Exile
Samurai Champloo
Cowboy Bebop
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Death Note
FLCL
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Eureka Seven (Original, not sequel)
Katanagatari
Macross Series, especially Macross Plus (Superb 4 episode series)
Any movie by Makoto Shinkai, Mamoru Hosada, or Studio Ghibli (I Cant stress these enough!)
