Destiny developer Bungie and Sony have been partners for longer than you think

Since Bungie broke off from its many-year partnership with Microsoft in 2007, it's been surprising to see the company turn around and hook right up with Sony for all these Destiny PS4 exclusives.

Bungie even gets exclusive dibs on launching Destiny with the white PS4.

One has to wonder how long the partnership has been going on. Did Bungie plan to hop right into bed with Sony the minute it changed its Facebook status to "single"? Or is it a more recent fling?

During an interview at E3 2014 Bungie Head of Community Eric Osborne revealed that, in fact, Bungie and Sony have been working together since before the PS4's design was even finalized.

Since the beginning

"Sony's been a really good partner all the way back to the beginning when we were first talking next-gen, and when we first started building Destiny," Osborne said. "We really didn't know where anybody was going, but it became really clear talking with Sony at the outset that their vision really aligned with where we wanted to go."

But it was more than their visions aligning - Osborne said Bungie even influenced the PlayStation 4's design.

"They worked with us, of course, on core systems and the controller itself - making it better for shooters, helping improve that for players, helping include and improve the social aspects of the game," he said.

Osborne continued, "But when we lined our pillars up with what we believed we wanted Destiny to do and put them against their pillars with what they wanted the PS4 to do it was like looking into a mirror."

Sony took a lot of input from devs, which is great. In fact, I remember reading an article about them going to big devs, especially FPS focused devs and prototyping the DS4. Turned out pretty well, it's the best controller I've ever used (only issue the whole bad analog batch). A huge step up from the DS3.

I thought it was going to be some shit like they started talks when they were leaving MS or hell even when Halo 3 was in development.

Apparently not.

I really like Destiny but I must admit before I played it and fell in love with it I sort of hoped it would be shit and and come no where near to how popular Halo is because of how traitorous they were.

All the more reason to allow players to disable the heaping helpings of auto-aim that were in the Destiny alpha.

More PS4 shooters, if not all of them, need the option to disable that stuff.

years ago I made an obscure post about Bungie actually talking about (potentially) going with Sony as a publisher because they wanted early access to hardware, to be able to spec things to their optimization, similar to relationship they had with MS for Xbox.

Acti just makes the offers ya can't refuse, I'd wager

Care to elaborate please?

I hate auto aim and I didn't really notice Destiny's to be a bother. No where near on the levels of COD or BF, atleast.

It really does seem Sony was razor smart with who they partnered with.

Just sort of wish they didn't let Insomniac and Sunset Overdrive go (I guess we're getting Ratchet and Clank Remastered, but not the same), would have been nice to get that @ 1080p. But I'm just glad the game is coming out, it looks so sick.

But yea, they did pretty good overall with the games they decided to push this go around.

I found it easily on a par with those two, in stark contrast to say Killzone Shadow Fall.

I'm surprised so many have said it's unnoticeable, as it certainly was to me. However, seeing as I found the better part of Destiny was PvE and exploring I don't think it matters much.

Gotta say I'm glad they made the call they did when it comes to Respawn and Bungie. I really think that will work out best for them in the end.

So:
-Fuck you Respawn, we don't share PS4 details with you.
-Hello Bungie, what do you want to know?

Well I take it as Bungie was well established and had games were as Respawn had only really just been created so no surprise they didn't let them in onto pre-released R&D...

Not that surprising that Sony wanted to get Bungie on-board early on. They created the biggest franchise in MS's portfolio and are widely regarded as one of the best shooter studios in the world as a result. They had also been independent of Microsoft since 2007 and, in 2010, already had a funding deal worked out with Activision for what has since become Destiny.

Respawn, on the other hand, was only just founded in 2010 and still had a lot of risk ahead of them. Their creative directors obviously had come from the biggest shooter franchise ever made, but their studio's culture, discipline, future, etc were all unknowns. Giving them early access to development kits and heavy input into controller design was surely more of a risk for Sony, one they clearly weren't willing to take.

I just thought they kind of turned their backs on XBox users who were their main support base. I'm glad they went on to make Destiny but sort of came off to me they said fuck you guys in order to say fuck you to MS.

To be fair, Respawn was a completely new studio that hadn't shipped a single game yet (if one started by veterans) while Bungie's been around for decades.

Being forced to pump out the same property over and over again would get insanely frustrating. I don't think they said fuck you to MS, but if they did I couldn't blame them. When you're a creative person, or a creative group for that matter, nothing is worse than having that creativity stifled.

ButÂ…the game is still coming to Xbox One and 360Â…

But did they really make a call? Destiny isn't an exclusive. Why not just be open with both, bungie and respawn?

I'm not really seeing where you're coming from unless you're inferring Destiny should have been an exclusive to MS or something?

The game is being released on all the main platforms (bar PC?), to it's detriment I may add as I think it would have been better on current generation only, how have Bungie turned their backs? Halo is still being made by mostly ex staffers too.
