Destiny developer Bungie and Sony have been partners for longer than you think

Weren't there some leaked documents a couple of years ago which showed Destiny as Xbox timed exclusive at one point?

This is actually the first thing I thought of when I read this haha. I remember Respawn saying Sony was shut doors on info.

Lemme pull a theory out of my ass real quick.

Maybe Sony was aware of how buddy-buddy Respawn and Microsoft were. Maybe they were afraid of the details of the PS4 being leaked to Microsoft. Maybe they trusted Bungie because there exists some bad blood between the folks at Bungie and the folks at Microsoft.

Totally a product of my imagination, but it seems plausible. Not that that's worth anything.

I think the simple answer is Respawn was a brand new studio with no games under its belt and was a small team. Sony was going to developers for input on the console from hardware to coding/tools to controller and felt Respawn really wouldn't be able to give viable feedback due to them being relatively new.

They would of missed out anyway do to MS moneyhatting EA. Your point?

Respawn approached Sony before MS and EA got together. There was a thread on it.

Not surprising. I know Bungie had input into the controller and other stuff. It's nice when someone will listen and actually work with developers to give them the platform that they want. At one time MS did that too.

Oh I have no doubt there is some bad blood there even if anyone won't admit to it. I think MS wanted nothing but a Halo factory and well the Bungie folks were wanting to try something new. I still to this day wish that project Phoenix hadn't been killed. The rumors of what it was sounded interesting as all hell.

How? They missed out entirely on Titanfall. Destiny is still coming to the Xbox One and 360.

Titanfall is relatively cool but outside of the MS faithful it's not making that big of a splash. All reports point to the sequel going multiplatform so clearly it didn't have the impact MS wanted.

Even if Destiny isn't exclusive it's being marketed as such and comes from one of the biggest names in shooters. Sony survived the Titanfall onslaught and still came out on top. Having Destiny marketed on their console isn't going to hurt.

Yea when then deal with them and MS ended I assumed Bungie was planting the ground work for them to work with Sony.

I also remember them and Naughty Dog playing each others demos at e3 2009. In fact Naughty Dog list bungie and Respawn in the credits for UC3 iirc

I really like Destiny but I must admit before I played it and fell in love with it I sort of hoped it would be shit and and come no where near to how popular Halo is because of how traitorous they were.

It's still coming to Xbox tho... Stop being a fanboy. I haven't even see people say this about Insomniac and SO.

The deal was only for the 1st game, no way the sequel was going to be anything other than multi-platform.

Bungie make great games and Destiny did deserve to go onto multiple formats. Just sticking to Xbox was always going to hinder their overall progress but I do dislike the way Bungie went with Sony and pretty much ignore the Xbox versions. Sony are probably throwing money to make sure the marketing heads in that direction but it can feel like Bungie are forgetting their Xbox fans.

EA has rights to the sequel and first game. When Microsoft init ally bought the rights to the first game, there was talk of picking up the sequel if the first did well enough. And with the "unprecedented partnership" between MS and EA, MS could have made the deal for the sequel if they wanted it bad enough.

So:
-Fuck you Respawn, we don't share PS4 details with you.
-Hello Bungie, what do you want to know?
Bungie has a better track record and for the most part their studio was intact after the deal with MS

Old IW was stuck in legal cases and studio imploded literally months after shipping a title

Which is safest and probably smoother to deal with?

I just thought they kind of turned their backs on XBox users who were their main support base. I'm glad they went on to make Destiny but sort of came off to me they said fuck you guys in order to say fuck you to MS.
Well Microsoft fans was their only support base because it was the only system their games launched on.

They wanted to expand, Microsoft wanted more Halo's
You don't want Bungie becoming like Rare and getting so horned into just one thing. I can see Microsoft fans being mad if it wasn't coming to your system, but it is. So I don't get the hate, if you love Bungie you want to see them do their best.

It's between Activision and Sony.

Bungie is being very open about the game coming to multiple platforms and that they haven't forgotten their Xbox fanbase and maybe even PC.

Developers have to do some things that the money giver demands of them.

Probably with Activision being involved with Destiny as the publisher there was probably some clause about getting involved with Respawn, or Sony just didn't want to be facing pressure from Activision about it considering the lawsuit between the two companies.

Do you have an article or anything talking about this? That sounds really interesting.
I'm not going to risk posting articles from sites that may get me banned here. Even if it isn't legit, that's what people on the Internet and industry heard, that was the rep at the time they had. So facts or not, it was the perceived notion. Just like it's perceived by the general population that Microsoft is the 'weaker' system when in actuality they are almost very similar to sony. Just a lot of their power and ideas was focused on things other than games.

All the more reason to allow players to disable the heaping helpings of auto-aim that were in the Destiny alpha.

More PS4 shooters, if not all of them, need the option to disable that stuff.

I ran into more cases than I'd have liked where the auto-aim pulled my reticle off a headshot I had lined up to try to track an unrelated enemy elsewhere. I thought overall the game controlled well, but I think of that like a cardinal sin when it comes to aim-implementation.

Hrmm...more of a Sony thing then. I am sure Bungie will make an awesome game on all fronts. To be honest, Sony fans deserve to see what all the Bungie fuss was about.

I always looked at the way Bungie regained their independence as an intact studio from MS as an exceptional good end to what could have been an Infinity Ward style disaster but I wonder how partnerships like this are viewed from MS.

Not like they had to choose between one or the other

But for whatever reason they did. Maybe Microsoft was more actively pursuing Respawn and they didn't feel it was worth the fight? I don't know. Destiny definitely feels like more of a PlayStation game than Titanfall, anyway.

I guess they could be a little salty from it but all the marketing Sony do works in MS's favor as well. As the game gets bigger, I am sure MS might throw money at Bungie for Destiny sequels or content etc.

As someone already said, it could be worse- Bungie was originally a Mac developer, and while they eventually went Mac/PC they were still at the time one of the few developers who released the Mac version of their games at the same time as the PC version. Halo was originally unveiled at MacWorld expo in 1999.

Then MS bought them. Mac users had to wait until 2003 to play a shitty port of Halo.

I still think that Respawn story is sugar coated.

It just seems a little convenient that they wouldnt say the company would benefit from pushing for a end to used games as well giant partnership with your publisher and MS didnt play a part in your game being exclusive? Yeah.... Ok pal.

And slightly off topic but I still think the Bungie / MS split is super interesting and I do hope someone writes a book about the lead up and aftermath someday. That story is about as silly as Naughty Dog randomly deciding to go independent. It was nuts! Then you had all those rumours of maybe Gearbox being brought in to take over Halo if the stuff with Bungie went south.... There is a real cool story there.

I really don't understand the reaction to the fact that Respawn didn't get the same access Bungie did. If two people want to borrow something you care about, who are you more likely to lend it to? Someone you barely know or someone you've known for a long time?

Well pillars aligned or not, they failed to helped them make a good controller for FPS imo, those shoddy triggers, I just can't...

Sony took a lot of input from devs, which is great. In fact, I remember reading an article about them going to big devs, especially FPS focused devs and prototyping the DS4. Turned out pretty well, it's the best controller I've ever used (only issue the whole bad analog batch). A huge step up from the DS3.

Yeah, seems it was a Game Informer article. Bungie was mentioned specifically over all others.

Traitorous? Jesus man, chill out and think about the whole situation. Bungie became independent in 2007, probably because they weren't interested in churning out Halo forever. They then design and create a new IP that is exciting for them, and that is coming out to BOTH Xbox and Playstation platforms. This is not an exclusive.

Insomniac went ahead and made an Xbox exclusive after making a ton of PS3 exclusives, and I still don't think it's "treacherous". Developers are just trying to make a living and do good work. They're not sitting in their cubicles laughing maniacally about their fan bases and how they're "allied" with x, y, or z company.

You have to keep in mind that, whatever choices an independent developer makes is for their own benefit. If they decided to partner with Sony, it's because it made sense for their studio. Same for Insomniac -- it must have benefited them creatively/economically to make an exclusive for the Xbox. Why do you have to bring stuff like "traitor" into this?

And what system did u play Destiny on to fall in love with it? Looks like Bungie isn't the only 1 messin round behind Microsofts back!
