I'm excited for the game.

My university is doing watch parties in the movie theater at the student union for all the U.S.A. games. Free pizza and chicken wings. Part of the reason I need the U.S. to go far is because I'm poor student and need free food.

I went to our game vs Ghana and sat near the back and this really cute girl came in alone and sat a seat next to me.

I was gonna talk to her but I had to go poop, and then when I came back, some guy had swooped her =(

Maybe she will be there for the game vs Portugal.

^ drop by the World cup gif thread, not to sound like a cu*t, but most of these are already posted there.

Anyway just heard about the younger bro of two Ivory Coast's players dying of cancer yesterday (Friday) that's so sad.

I want at least one African team to make it far this World Cup, what better team than Côte d'Ivoire.

It was the Toure brothers' sibling😔. It will be emotional for them in their next match.

I've been looking back at past WC & I think there must be some sort of African team curse or something - In every WC since 86 only one African team makes it past the Group stage. Even in 2010 supposedly "Africa's World Cup" only Ghana made it through. Supporting African teams is frustrating & this WC doesn't seem any different sadly😕

Posted already, I suppose?

Stop reminding us pls, let us get over it so we can enjoy the rest of the tournament

supremely pissed off still

Man...you can still find my posts. Every damn world cup, I'm always "I think England might genuinely do well this time" nope lol.

I'll say "Never again" now, but come 2018, I'll say the same thing.

Don't worry, by 2018 all of our talent will have developed and they'll have had international tournament experience, we'll be ready to finally make an impact after the shitty decade we've had!

right?

riiiight?

I wash my hands of Hodgson, and that took some doing given the fucking fithy job he did at Liverpool.

Getting a free ride because we're more fun to watch than we were in 2010, and there are aspects of the job that he's done okay in. His management has more holes than a colander though

People are using Capello as evidence against hiring a foreign coach (which is the only option aside from persisting with the Hodge given the frankly shocking standard of English managers) but there's no reason a good, fitting foreign manager can't do a good job with England.

England's last five wc:

France 98: 2nd Round - lost to Argentina on pens
Japan/SK 02: Quarter Final - lost to Brazil 1-2 (Who won the wc)
Germany 06: Quarter Final - lost to Portugal on pens
SA 2010: Second Round - smashed by Germany 1-4 (Lampard goal drama)
Brazil 2014: First Round - Could not even salvage a draw.

It's getting worse. :((

I messed up my bracket because I listen to my cousin even though I knew Costa Rica was good. I violated rule #1 Never listen to a soccer fan or analyst because they have a built in European bias.

To be fair in SA you guys had a goal disallowed that would have changed the dynamic of that game, that loss wasn't really your fault. This time though, totally your fault. Rooney even broke his curse and finally scored but you guys still couldn't win. You guys need to go back to basics and start from scratch.

England is the equivalent of US in terms of power.

Hey! The US is getting better, not worse.

They'll challenge more than Portugal did, they're far more spunky, but Germany should beat them all the same. As an American, I'll be rooting for Ghana though, as a win gives the US a chance to win the group even if Germany beats us.

...of course, we'd have to throttle Portugal 6-0 to do it and then lose to Germany 1-0, but a chance all the same. Either way, I don't want us to get out of the group stage just to job to Belgium.

If the US can scrape out a win against Ghana, they can beat Belgium. I still think Ghana is pretty good, they just had a bad game against the US. I'm afraid Ghana wins later on today, which would mean the US would have to beat Portugal possibly, or get a draw vs Germany and Portgual to advance.

Ghana won't beat Germany. Ghana's a good team but once you shut down the counter they aren't as scary. Their defense isn't amazing either so the Germans are going to plow through that back line like it was the Polish border. The US attacked it all of twice and got through pretty easily both times. Unless Ghana manages to improve their defense a lot it's going to be a shooting gallery for the Germans.

We'll see. Last time Ghana gave us a pretty good fight for our 1-0 against them. Can't underestimate them, they're with their back against the wall and give anything to win this. Sadly I think this will only result in a lot of fouls from their side. Hope Prince-Boateng doesn't end a German career again. RIP Ballack

It's weird how everyone in group G speaks of matches against Germany as automatic loses.

What's so great about advancing to Round of 16 if you just auto-lose against certain teams?

The teams get paid more based on how far they advance. Round of 16 is about $9,000,000. But you would just want the chance to prove yourself anyway, there are plenty of upsets in the history of the World Cup. There is no guarantee Germany will even make it out of the group stage, they have only played one match.

Well, that's an understandable reaction if you're grouped against a team which has always reached at least semis in the last 12 years in any (Greece 2004 never happened ;-;) international tournament they've participated in, generally is ranked 2-3 on FIFA and Coca-Cola ranking and unlike Spain this tournament wiped away another high-ranked opponent 4-0 in the opening match. We are no joke.

It's not automatically right, though. Germany IS beatable in group phase and we've lost all of our second group matches since Euro 2008 IIRC (edit: not true, we won all group matches in euro2012)

I'm not saying they aren't good, I just think it's pointless and annoying when people speak as though they have keine Chance.

I am honestly thinking USA is much better these days. They pull out wins that England would probably lose and disappoint everyone with.
What amazing wins are the US pulling out? Ghana? Friendlies against Europe sides D-squad?

England easily has a better squad than USA, it really isn't worth discussing.

I think the US is capable of getting a point against Germany. I just don't want the US to be in the situation where they have to beat Germany to advance (or even get a point)

England played well (lol) against some of the best teams in the world and lost. The USA played an average team badly and scraped a win. not comparable.

Well really I am talking about the perspective of the fans.

I doubt the players themselves consider any game an auto-loss.

As an Australian fan I can tell you that just being able to cheer for your team at the World Cup is amazing. I was already 25 by the time I got to see them play in one, so win, draw, or loss I really didn't care. That they actually made it to the second round was seen as a huge achievement here. I am sure Costa Rican fans at this World Cup are going to feel similarly regardless of where their team ends up.

Congrats Costa Rica, 6 points in 2 games in a group with 3 world champions, very good!
I am Italian and having seen how Costa Rica beat Uruguay ,and how we play usually at the beginning of a tournament , very slow and not very good, I thought we would have easily lost or tied, and in fact we lost!

Only a sadist could enjoy that GTA Wasted gif.

Perhaps I'm squeamish but watching a man's nose break over and over again is disturbing.
