If it makes you feel better, Samus was one of the two characters I played at Smash Fest, and she felt like night and day from Brawl, (in a good way), at least with her physical attacks. She's one of my favorite Nintendo characters and I love playing as her, but her progressive slope into ass has mad me sad. Was very happy to see her getting notable improvements finally.

The second character I played was Little Mac. He was a fuckin riot. My most wanted newcomer will most certainly be my new main. Along with Snake.....

Her recovery pop at the end feels amazing

Can we please stop talking about Fire Emblem lords?

Thanks to you guys I now have [ld] Purpose stuck in my head and desperately want to wreck someone with Marth ;-;

Oh random idea for an event match: Coliseum Brawl

Your character: Marth
Your enemies: First Ike and Chrom tag team, after you've defeated them you have to fight every single stage boss one after the other. Between each fight you get a single Maxi Tomato
.
.
.
All while [id] Purpose plays in the background. Sakurai pls ;-;

I played a lot of Samus in Melee and couldn't really get used to her in Brawl. Also hated how the final smash forced the character swap.

I am fully expecting her to get nerfed to shit by the actual release, lol.

i don't know enough about the technical specifics to really add to this discussion

Don't worry, none of us do.

Lets take a moment to remember that people thought Sonic was gonna be top tier and that Meta Knight had "no killing power." In those early E For All Brawl impressions.

People just jumping to conclusions here.

Then again, E For All did have an Ike with Marth's ground speed.

All these changes in characters and things got me thinkin. Who are the characters you've mained throughout the series? I play a bunch of characters, but my competitive mains are...

N64- Captain Falcon
Melee - Captain Falcon
Brawl - Snake

I still use Falcon a lot in Brawl, but damn did they Al Capone him with that nerf bat.

64: "Evil" Luigi (the black overalls alt that they ruined in each subsequent game)
Melee: Mewtwo (Marth if I actually cared about winning)
Brawl: Pit, Poke'mon Trainer, Wolf & sometimes Toon Link with NES alt

So yeah, a lot of ship jumping, 50/50 between eagerness for new characters & Sakurai ruining/cutting old ones. For SSB4, I'm leaning towards Megaman & Little Mac just` in terms of fanboyism. May drop Pit due to changes to his recovery, already dropping Charizard because the point of PT was having the whole party on hand. Wolf's fate is dependent on whether he returns or not.

& of course, there's always the question of how I'll go about Miis. My own Mii will probably be Gunner, but the sky's the limit on what famous character themed miis I'll make.

I have to wonder if people who hate the Spacies for being Too Good also hate Meta Knight. Especially considering the latter was far worse when it came to obliterating game balance.

Since some people are listing mains:
64 - Kirby. Kirby is so great in this game. He feels so good, and everything about him is perfect.
Melee - Ice Climbers, then Ness, now Pikachu. Back In The Day I ran IC all the time and had a lot of fun. More recently I switched over to Ness (who has been a secondary) but now I just play Pikachu because PM!Ness ruined my Melee!Ness.
Brawl - Ness when I played it. Because Ness is awesome.
PM - Ness, Pikachu, Charizard, and Samus, with several secondaries as well. My favorite part of PM is how you can play such a wide variety of characters and never feel like you're deliberately nerfing yourself. I can only hope/dream that SSB4 comes close to PM's character balance.

Considering how insanely much fun I had with him in once match at the Smash Fest, there is a distinctly nonzero chance I will main Mega Man in SSB4. It's also likely that I will put serious effort into learning Villager as well as previous game mains. There is a high probability I will main Ness again because Ness is the best.

N64- I don't remember. Maybe spam thunder Pikachu or Link
Melee- I tried other characters but I used Link and Peach for the longest.
Brawl- I tried Ike for a long time but he wasn't as effective as I hoped. so I have no real main.
MP- No real main either, I just play it for hell of it. BUT I do love to use Samus and DK.

Ness was definitely up there with Captain Falcon for me in 64. Since he was the hardest to unlock, (I was like...9), I just had it in my head that he was probably the best in the game. And I kicked ass with him. I still love playing as him, but for some reason the 64 version always felt more powerful to me.

I don't think I've ever had explicit mains, but I've definitely gravitated towards:

64: Link / Samus
Melee: Link / Samus / Ganondorf / Marth
Brawl: Marth / Link / Ike / Snake
PM: Samus / Ganondorf / Marth / Link

Regardless of how awful he'll be in the final games, the first thing I'll do in both versions of SSB4 is run through Classic mode as Link. It's an unbreakable tradition at this point.

N64 - didn't ever play against anyone but CPU, so 404:Main not found

Melee - Marth. Unlocked him, played one Match and decided 5 seconds into the match to never play anyone else again. To my knowledge I actually followed through, at least in VS mode :D

Brawl - Marth, but since some of my friends took a nosedive in Brawl (how?!) I usually play random and only have used Marth in 20% of all matches as a result.

P:M - Haven't played it with friends so far, no main.

SSB4 - Marth of course, but the newcomers look really interesting. I'll try them all and really hope that Palutena resonates with me.

Melee: Samus, Game&Watch, Link, Jigglypuff, Ness(1st two were from when I was much younger)
Brawl: Sonic, Pikachu, ROB, Diddy Kong (forgot how to use him entirely though, want to relearn though) , Pokemon Trainer- main Ivysaur mostly
PRoject M: Toon Link, Captain Falcon

Also tried out Fox for Melee, Olimar for Brawl, and Lucas for Project M and had decent success

you all sleeping on brawl minus? most fun brawl mod for sure

anyway, I've always liked captain falcon the best, and then game and watch. definitely playing little mac for 4, though -- he was so fun at best buy

64: Falcon, Pikachu
Melee: Falcon, Falco, Marth
Brawl: MK, Snake, Falco, Marth, Mario, Samus, whoever I feel like because who cares it's brawl

Don't worry, none of us do.

No shit, but I think people are entitled to early impressions of the game and characters. Otherwise you won't see the fun that is comparing early impressions to stuff later I'm it's lifespan.

I select Random for every match.

It's the only true way to play.

64: Kirby/Pikachu
Melee: Ganondorf
Brawl: Lucario, Ike, R.O.B.
Project M: Ganondorf
Smash 4 Demo: Mega Man. Dude's a ton of fun, will probably be my first main for Smash 4 (unless they un-neutered Ganondorf).

N64 - Samus
Melee - Samus
Brawl - Samus
and Metaknight because Brawl Samus is zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

With Smash 4, I'm looking at Little Mac and, surprise surprise, Samus.

Samus Bros. Fuck yeah. So excited they pulled ZS from her, now getting final smash won't suck. Also she looks faster more like melee samus, and stronger. Going to be awesome to play with her.

The screw attack, the godsend all powerful attack from the 2D Metroid games, is finally an attack that doesn't suck in Smash!

YAY! About time. Yeah, I loved that shit.
It's actually pretty great in 3D Metroid too; you'd be surprised at how much damage it shaves off some bosses in Prime, and Other M still lets it insta-kill most normal stuff.

Yeah, from the sounds of it and my limited play time, Samus is going to be a lot more fun this time around. I'd like a missile buff, but I'm willing to try a more melee-oriented Samus, and that fast grapple beam is sexy. She also has a lot more potential to KO off the top of the screen with her improved up-smash and Screw Attack coupled with the removal of smash DI.

Too bad about the forward smash (it sucks).

64: Link
Melee: Falco when I was young, More on the Side of Marth nowadays.
Brawl: Mostly metaknight? Just playing with friends and spamming Down B because it was fun for me.
Sm4sh: Megaman Tattoo says I have to main him here, but I'm super interested in Greninja, rosalina and luma, and Shulk assuming the leak is real.
Project M: Roy only final destination.

64: Ness
Melee: Ness, Bowser, Ganondorf, Sheik, Peach, Random
Brawl: Bowser, Ganondorf, Ness, Random
Wii U / 3DS: I have no idea, Random

EDIT:
Also the type advantage for Pokemon Trainer was completely broken. Water moves are exclusive to Squirtle (FLUDD is a joke). Grass moves are exclusive to Ivysaur. And Fire moves are everywhere. Poor Ivysaur having to deal with only a tether for recovering as well as taking x1.1 knockback from fire.

All these Marth impressions are leaving me thinking that he's going to go the way of Sheik and Fox. Initially unpopular because of the heavy nerfs but slowly rises into mid-tier.

Or it could just be an alpha and Sakurai will spruce him up based on player impressions.

I still use Falcon a lot in Brawl, but damn did they Al Capone him with that nerf bat.

Brawl - Snake, Falco

not sure who will be using on Smash4, so far tested Samus, Greninja, Little Mac and Megaman

I think it would be really hard to make Marth a bad character. He just naturally has good tools. He might not be godlike anymore, but I'm sure he'll be fine.

Mario is always my main. With various other characters as secondary.

N64: random
Melee: random
Brawl: random

So who wants to set up a tournament with me where you have to pick a random charter every round?

But there was no Random Character Select in N64. Unless you did it in a roundabout way and just set up a COM player then swapped it to human after a character was chosen.

Mario for all of them. Luigi was a very close second in the N64 version, but then Sakurai completely overhauled him for the worse (though I'm sure pretty much everyone will disagree with me on that point).

Wolf is still not in Smash 4 Sakurai.

No Wolf no Buy

True. I still like playing as both of those guys though. I guess by bad character I mean Samus in Brawl bad. Where it's just almost not even fun to play as them.

N64: Fox
Melee: Shiek, Fox, Falco, Marth
Brawl: Diddy (nerf all my past favs), Marth
4: Hopefully Marth, Megaman

Or there is the even more traditional method of just selecting a random character each time and not sticking to the same one. To be fair, I only really played the first when I visited a cousin so I never had time to pick a favourite and I was far more interested in experiencing them all.

64: Ness, Pikachu, Kirby, and DK (I am the greatest Smash 64 player of all time)
Melee: Doctor Mario (horrible at Melee, go figure)
Brawl: Never played for real

New Smash: mutha fuckin PACMAN

Heathen! You defy our Lord Question Mark?

Yes. Sometimes you just go "I want to play that character this time."

My mains went
64: Yoshi (the real year of the Yosh!)
Melee: Mewtwo/Luigi
Brawl: Sonic (still think he hasn't gotten the love he deserves)

Hoping to make the jump to Little Mac this time around. Punch Out is just special to me and it looks like he may have Sonic's speed that I love so much but with a strong bang for his buck.
