Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

That's odd... it's on, you can't get on?

The server has been acting a little wonky lately, I'm going to take it down for a bit and tinker around with it. I'll try getting it back up tomorrow morning.

Finally, the game runs at 60fps almost constantly now that i've upgraded my rig. Now if only they can move onto the next phase of the beta!

The progression overhaul is what I'm waiting for. I think what they have planned sounds awesome and will improve the game exponentially.

Yeah, the idea of having a whole progression path based around things like farming and building houses for NPCs sounds really fun. I've been idle since around Feb/Mar waiting for another update, because it doesn't take too long to hit a content wall as-is.

Hey guys, after much thought, I will be taking the server down until the next phase kicks in.

I am doing this for two reasons:

1) I want to actually participate in the nightly-build program. While I don't really care if my save gets borked every update, you guys would probably get upset/frusrated by it. So in order to stave off those complaints, probably best to just not run the server.

2) The amount of people actually coming to the server is pretty dismal. Maybe.... 1-3 people every 24 hours, with sometimes days at a time where no one shows up? I am afterall, running this on my personal computer, with that kind of traffic, it isn't really worth it for me to keep the server going.

When I plopped down money for this game, I went in expecting to be able to play/test any up-to-date features/systems they implemented, as soon as they sent out the updates. I was not expecting a full game, I was expecting to test a game in progress.

With that being said, the fact that official updates are now rare, but nightly-builds aren't, I would rather do the latter, honestly.

---
But what about GAF World?

I'm backing that file up, so its not going to be lost. I'll put it up for download, so if you wanted it part of your "universe", I would assume its just a simple matter of dropping the files into the appropriate folder.

---
The server.

Ah, well, I don't mind if people want to hop in my universe, so if you decide you'd like to stop by, drop me a line, and I'll put the server up for a day. Bear in mind, I will now be running nightly-builds, so unless you're doing the same, it may not be compatible.

And the server will be back when the next phase hits. So don't worry.

---
I'll probably be posting some comments more frequently now about the game, mainly pertaining to the kind of stuff I'm encountering in the game because of these nightly-builds.

It's frustrating that these guys havent really had a real update since February. The move to their new location was months ago, so I dunno why its taking so long still.

Yup.

Again, it's 100% on me for buying the game but after this and DayZ, I'm done with Early Access (as well as episodic games).

Just can't trust devs to deliver content on a timely manner. Not always their fault but it's just not worth it.

They had trouble getting visas for a couple of their staff members, and they've basically been holding progression back until "1.0" is ready, which I believe will be the 'official' launch of the game (they've said they'll have all of the stretch goal content in, I think).

I do agree that it's dragged on a little bit, but games from indie devs (especially newly-formed indie-devs) are prone to all sorts of unexpected surprises. Having played the game even in the early state that it's in, I know it's worth the wait.

What makes you think updates should consistently come in a timely manner? You know they're working on the game.

Damn been that long, I had a hard drive crash and never reinstall the game. Damn, did they ever get controller support?

Months ago?
They finished moving in on May 19. That was a little over a month ago.

We haven't been posting what updates they've been up to in this thread, because quite frankly, you guys really should go to their website and actually read them yourself, instead of the waiting for the few of us who do, and then someone spends a page or two complaining about the game, but it does say they finished moving in on May 19.

On a lighter note, after messing a bit with the current nightly-build, some thoughts:
  • the new monster attacks are definitely a lot better than what we've been getting before.
  • like the fact that you can now actually aim your melee weapon. I'm kinda of giggling with glee as I jump in the air as I perform down thrusts on monsters.
  • I'll need to see what needs to be done get get an upgraded AI for the ship's computer, but yeah, they really did put in the Fresh Prince song quote as the greeting line.
  • looks like the admin commands actually work now, which is great. I can now kick/ban people from servers, among other things.

I have been paying attention to the updates on the site, but I have not really had much to say about the game itself. Haven't played it in months, as I am waiting for the next phase of the game to be released.

Yeah, playing the waiting/blackout game as well. The beta was sweet, so I have no doubt I'll like the end result. Will hold off until then to avoid burning out/getting bored.

Still haven't played this since January. Still doesn't bother me. Didn't necessarily get what I wanted to pay for yet, but can't deny that I already had a lot of fun with it. Cool that they're doing nightly builds. Definitely interested in the server coming back when there's more actual game to play.

Yea, really disappointing how the development of this game has gone. I haven't played it since march and even then I haven't even put 5 hours into it.

Their next update better be major.

Damn... thats a HUGE loss.. Sorry to hear that. Despite whatever they may say I can't see how that won't set them back. There's no way it can't.

Well, someone beat me to it. Yup, Bartwe left to make his own game. He couldn't move to London, and wanted to focus on his family (which is perfectly normal, having kid(s) ).
On a side note, Kyren is the lead developper of Starbound, not Bartwe (though he definitly was closer to the fanbase, thanks to his streams).

does someone mind teaching me how to join a server? while I've played building games like this before (mainly terraria and Minecraft) I never actually played with anyone, pretty much always played by myself but thats getting extremely boring so I was hoping to join a server. Its not as easy as just pressing "join game" like many other games do, modern gaming has spoiled me ;(

You have to have the IP adress of the server, as well as the password if there is one. Enter them in the proper fields, and it should work. Joining a server is way easier than hosting one. I hope that helps.

  1. Find out the data for your server of choice: login name, password and server address (name or IP)
  2. Launch Starbound Launcher
  3. Select either "Launch Starbound" or "Launch Starbound (OpenGL)" at the bottom
  4. Wait for loading screen to finish
  5. Select "Multiplayer" from the choices offered on the left bottom corner
  6. Select (or create) a player character
  7. Type the appropriate data from Step 1 into the "Server Address", "Server Account" and "Server Password" fields
  8. Click on "Join Server"
  9. Enjoy

That's as complete a walkthrough as I can give. If you have questions, post them here or PM me, and we'll work things out.

You can check the Chucklefish forums for open servers if you want to, or join the GAF server(s) that may or may not be down. If you opt for the latter you can just press the quote button on the first post of this thread and read the necessary server info in the text area.

GAF Server is officially offline until further notice (I posted about that a few post earlier). I'm guessing Starviper server should be up, since that one runs on the Multiplay service, I think.

Understandable. Appreciate all the work you've done to keep it up and running for us!

Humble Bundle: Starbound clone edition:
https://www.humblebundle.com/weekly
Check Darkout, Signs of Life and Edge of Space's trailers while keeping a straight face, I dare you. Starbound must be doing great to be receiving so much... flattery.
Can't really be clones when most of those game released before Starbound ever came out. Darkout came out in Janurary 2013, Edge of Space in June 2013. Starbound released in December. Signs of Life in January

Starbound was announced in 2012, though. But yeah, it might actually be a case of parallel development, which is unfortunate for all involved (including Starbound) that they all decided to expand on Terraria's formula in space at the same time.

I still found it funny when I watched the third trailer for a game with the same concept in the same bundle. But hey, if you're in love with this kind of game I guess it's a sweet deal.

Yeah, 2 early access games... I'll pass. The genre initiated by Terraria is fun and all, but I'm still waiting for a worthy successor, one which would be complete at launch, and I'm avoiding games which are obvious alpha/beta now.

As for Starbound... Well, we will see how it goes when the next update will be released.

Still nice to hear, I guess. I'm waiting for the next update (which, by all accounts, should be really big) to play it again.

Honestly, I think the developer has (correctly) recognized that they've already made the bulk of their money on early access sales and have slowed development significantly in response. Meanwhile their other unreleased game is progressing very nicely according to their blog. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed what I paid for but it's strange that they're sticking to their story about this being the first of three beta phases after being on the market for half a year.

Hey guys, I work at Chucklefish on Starbound. I usually read the forums but only just encountered this thread! I'm one of the newer hires but feel free to ask me stuff if you want to know something.

Thanks for saying hi. :) Is the replacement programmer for the programmer who was lost settling in well?

Let me get that vita version, bruh.

jk. Kinda. Have fun working on such a great game!

Great game. Vita launch soon?

The priority when it comes to porting is to get the game to a 1.0 state on PC first, and then we'll move on to porting the game to other platforms. PS4 is already confirmed, but it's likely that it'll eventually be available on multiple platforms.

Any word on native controller support? :D

Nothing concrete yet, but we managed to get our hands on a steam controller a few weeks back, and the game played very well with it. We'll definitely have official steam controller support, I think standard controller support will involve a bit more work, but I reckon it'll happen.

Yeah Kyren is the lead coder on Starbound, it's sad to lose anybody on the team but we didn't suffer too much of a setback as we'd already brought on Metadept at that point. He's currently visiting us in the UK office, but we're hoping to get him over here permanently. He's a cool guy!

Stargate? :o Do you have a link for more info?

Right now with Starbound, we're fleshing out a bunch of the tiers. Tier 1 has already been reworked pretty considerably, and I think it's a lot more fun. We'd ideally like every tier to be different, to keep things fresh as you progress through the game.
The gate system is part of the new fleshed out Tier 2. It will lead you to the trading post, which will represent the first static location in Starbound. With its own lore, residents and back story. It exists outside of the procedurally generated star map in its own dimension and can also be accessed from any gate the player finds in space.

At the outpost you’ll find people to give you quests, including quests that lead to a furnace upgrade and a quest to obtain breathing apparatus that allows you to visit moons. To complete these quests you’ll need to visit planets in the solar system the gate is in.
We're pretty much doing daily updates on the news page now, to coincide with the nightly builds. It gives you a better idea of what we're working on day to day.
