Look, if you can't handle the amount of freedom that flows from the skills of our wonderful American soccer players, that's your problem.

I don't particularly care for the jokes, but I know that they touch a nerve with a lot of people whose countries have just emerged, or are still in dictatorships (sometimes even US backed dictatorships!) I have an Iraqi friend who can talk about it a lot more but basically it boils down to, freedom shouldn't be something you joke or boast about. It's a fundamental human right and you should be sad that some people don't have it.

You don't understand freedom if you can't take people joking about it. GBA

It's a self-aware and slightly deprecating take on the whole "murrika" image. Its the same reason people post fat people in mobility scooters waving american flags and shooting guns when we score. No one's posting George Washington pissing on middle east democracy demonstrations.

Suggesting people shouldn't joke about freedom is ironic.

The USA isn't any more "free" than 95% of the countries in the tournament.

That's the joke. How do you not realize this.

I know I joke about America's glorious freedom as a parody of overly patriotic right wingers who talk about freedom 24/7.

It's not because one is "oblivious" to the world.

Imagine

Clint Dempsey scores a goal

The crowd start to cheer wildly

USA

USA

USA

millions of effigies of Cher are being fucked up and down the country

Obama is stroking one out in the Oval Office and painting that White House cream

Deuce walks up to the camera, calm as you like. He brushes off the attention of his teammates.

"Clint m8', says Jozy, 'wot r u doin lol"

Dempsey takes a microphone out from his shorts

"I was born into freedom, and thanks to an above average education, the money to buy a soccer ball and the charisma honed during years and years of rapping professionally, I maintained my freedom. But millions around the world don't have this privilege. So tonight, when your woman is gargling your sweet Californian balls, or when you're joyriding in your magnificent Minnesotan vehicle, remember the unfortunate amongst us who don't even have balls"

"Woznt this about freedom Clint m8" says Jozy

"Oh yeah"
