It's exactly BECAUSE he was surrounded by Portuguese that he simply should have bombed it to the other side of the field.

Yes I agree. He should've unloaded it. But the ball had JUST landed, it wasn't an easy situation. Still a bad play.

You are severely underestimating the athletic talent the U.S. has. If soccer were the number 1 sport in the U.S there is no question in my mind they would be able to field a legitimate world cup contending team. The popularity of the sport is slowly increasing, but they have to find a way to steal some of the talent that is going into the other major sports.

Basically take any wide receiver/cornerback/safety/running back in the NFL

And any point guard/smaller shooting guard in the NBA

And train them from a young age to play soccer and develop their bodies to excel at the sport

It wouldn't always translate of course, but the overall skill level on team USA would be much higher.

Wait wait wait, so both the US/Germany match AND the Ghana/Portugal one are on AT THE SAME TIME on Thursday?!

This is awful. I was at least hoping Wednesday night I could watch the Ghana game and see what my level of nervousness had to be for the Germany/US game.

I am being hard on Bradley, but to be fair, I will say there wasn't a whole lot he could've done at the end there; he was surrounded by 4 Portuguese and they were closing in. It wasn't an easy situation considering the ball had simply landed on his foot.

most players would have hoofed it away into touch

Goal difference is a total of 5:

USA +1
PT - 4

e.g. if USA loses to Germany by 2, USA'a goal difference would become -1

if PT manage to win by 3, PT's goal difference would become -1

Even. I don't know how it would be decided when even, but that is just an example.

If this happen, PT will advance because they score more goals.

It will be a math thread and it will be amazing

To summarize anti-USMNT GAF:
-USA was supposed to lose to Ghana
-Then USA won but got lucky, and Ghana is actually shit.
-Then USA was supposed to get crushed by Portugal. -The teams tie, but Portugal actually sucks and will lose to Ghana (they're good again now.)
-USA will now lose to Germany and fail to advance.

ESPN showing the scenarios for USA to advance:

Scenario 1: Win/draw vs. Germany on Thursday
Scenario 2: Loss to Germany + Ghana-Portugal draw
Scenario 3: Lost to Germany + U.S. holds tiebreaker over Ghana-Portugal winner

I'm n00b and have no idea what scenario #3 means, lol
The tiebreaker is on goal differential. Right now:
  • US is +1
  • Ghana is -1
  • Portugal is -4

Hindsight. A minute before that kid had the ball in the corner and decided to cross into the box, no goal came, but a lot of stupidity in the match not just this one time.

Besides, what made the goal was the perfect cross, for fucks sake not like he gave it 1 on 1 to an opposing player.

That's done to prevent collusion after that 1982 game.

Da fuck is this shit? Since when does America play to tie other than our miracle 1-1 win versus England?

That's the reason why soccer is not popular in the US. Sure, this happens, but I can't see any fans outside the US wanting this. "Parking the bus" saved US in the first game but fucked them in the second one.

No real football fan would want this shit to happen.

I was only kidding...

I do think Low is going to do Klinsi a favor, tbh. They will receive updates during the match, they can spare players, cards and potential injuries as well.

Sure, but Belgium wouldn't be the best team to do it. I really can't say ANYTHING positive about Belgium. And I was happy when they beat Russia today...
Form can change dramatically in the knockout stages. Not that I fancy them to knock out the Germans of all people lol

And lose?

Thats what "control your own destiny" means. Of course if they lose then they nned help. But now with a win or draw they are in. Portugal and ghana, thats not enough. Even if they win, they need help. So they do not control their own destiny.

Its not a bad place to be for the US considering their odds coming in.

Crap match, Portugal is abysmal, lol at Nani and especially that thing they call a forward in the name of Eder, worse player i've seen in a world cup in a long long time, he can't even control a ball for fucks sake, ridiculous.

Portugal is practically eliminated, i think the US is fucked unless they manage to get a tie from Germany cause Ghana is going to mop the floor with this portuguese joke of a "team"

I'll be rooting for my Concacaf bros.

Tomorrow is going to be pretty nerve-wracking waiting for the Mexico vs Croatia match.

Ronaldo is the only player in the world that could make an assist like that, to kick the ball to that specific spot, this guy gets trashed for being an overhyped douche face, BUT dude is basically the face of Football on the planet

This is done intentionally to prevent teams in final matches colluding based off the results in the other match.

All third rounds of the group stage are played at the same time, so you can't play on results. (Even if you can in this case...)

I don't see a problem with this. Ghana is a good team. Portugal is shit team. US is OK. Pretty much covers everything. US didn't "deserve" to win first game, but "deserved" to win second one.

High school/college kids play god damn baseball over soccer. Hell, probably even swimming. That's how few of our best athletes end up playing soccer.

Doesn't work like that, but fine whatever.
How do you think sports work? Do you think Indians and Pakistanis are genetically selected to be great cricket players, or maybe that societies' best athletes gravitate towards the sports that the specific society favors?

Pointing out that the us would be more capable at futbol if the country focused on it is not far fetched or bragging, it's truth. If Brazil's number one sport was baseball they'd be pretty damned good.

Yeah, I think that cross has been overlooked a bit. It was amazing.

Seriously, any other player in that position gets the ball and the US still walks away with a win. Beasley should have mowed him down and taken the red, Chandler would have been able to handle a game that didn't matter.

We excel in everything though. Baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer and also funnel a ton into our own sport NFL football.

need a meme, with ronaldo having the rest of the Portugal players being weights on his knees. they are the real tendinitis.
dragged them to the world cup, now keeping them in.

OMG @ the epic salt after the equalizer.

I don't think there will be a truce between Germany and USA though. Would be ridiculous. That said I am scared of the last match, Murica is much better than I thought. I think their playstyle might end up hurting us.

Can't really hate that cross. It was a beauty.
