Well you heard it here, folks. Time to stop rooting for the US unless we're a "real" soccer fan.

lol

That's not the point I'm making. I'm saying that good US performance will not fix what's wrong with soccer coverage in the US and the MLS as a whole.

Just to be clear there are "not real" fans in ALL countries. Just in the US it's overwhelming majority.

Now I know next to nothing about soccer/futbal, but was the American goalie (Howard?) really damn good or is it just me? He seemed to be absolutely on top of shit for the most part.

Howard was Man of the Match. He held the 1-0 which was crucial, albeit Eder is a shit striker that should've scored after that off the post shot by Nani. Howard was out of balance, he only needed to shoot either left or right. He decided to lob it and Howard had that awesome save.

here is a news flash it already is. It is not an elite league but not following it because someone thinks it is infinitely inferior is just plain wrong.

I'm not saying it isn't worth while, more like on a mainstream level in the States and not regional. Because for America we know that's how it works for a sport to be considered popular. I'm perfectly fine following a league that isn't elite. Hell, I watch both NLL and MLL.

It's more than that. There are 152 league-wide international player slots. They started out divided evenly at 8 per team, but teams are allowed to trade them, so there is some disparity now.

8 per team is waay too many

to be a superpower this late in the game u need to minimize the amount of foreign players, it will improve the quality of home grown talent. its the reason why england are crap, all the best players in their league are foreign and english players get pushed to the back of the queue and dont get the play time

I thought MLS attendance was doing pretty decent numbers recently?
Given the level of play for certain games. MLS attendance and viewership borders on absurdity. Most passionate league in the world. No other group of clubs could ride that kind of popularity with those kinds of results.

Except the NFC East.

Sacramento just got a Tier 3 expansion team in the Sacramento Republic FC.
They've had sell out crowds at the university field which seats 27k. Then they built their home field but it only seats 8k. Obviously the rest of the games are sold out.

I'd hope the rest of the MLS leadership is a bit smarter. Why build a 8k stadium when you know you can sell out one more than 3 times the size.

don't worry, ESPN will soon be calling the NFC east the best division in football again this year, like they do every year

Also, what's up with all of the condescending bullshit aimed at US fans? I almost never watch sports except for the Olympics and World Cup. I would probably actually watch soccer more regularly if there was a good US league and I knew people irl who actually watched the sport. Why does that make my opinions and interest invalid? Fuck off.

Nationalist pride combined with cluelishness can piss people off. Heck, look at Ronaldo. He is one of the best and still gets shat on. Its part of the game

Michael Bradley needs some damn redemption this tournament because of how shit he has been. He needs to take his anger out on Germany.

If you're interested, watch the MLS man. What's stopping you?

I don't even know when the MLS plays/what channel it's on and was under the impression it was a shitty league. Also, nobody I know gives a flying fuck about soccer, so I'd just be sitting alone watching it, which isn't that fun. I can manage to convince some of my friends to watch some World Cup matches, but that's about it.

Just signed a new deal. I *think* it might actually be more lucrative/at least on the same level as the NHL?

TV ratings definitely need to improve though

If what I'm reading is correct MLS is going to get 90 mil a year from ESPN/Fox/Univision, while the NHL gets 200 mil a year for their US deal with NBC. So not terrible, but still half of what the 4th U.S. sport gets.

Hopefully not because he'll probably fuck up royally if he tries to do so.

Not that I know anything really haha, just so disappointing that it was clearly him that led to the goal at the end.

Welcome to football.

If you can't take it, stick to hand egg.

I'll say it a billion times if I have to, Bradley is no good, it's nepotism that he got onto the team in the first place, and he is so obviously scared of the big moments, I wonder if his shorts are soiled after a contentious match.

Guys, I'm not American but you're too hard on Bradley. He fucked up but he's pretty decent at roma when I've saw him.

It's actually not that bad now. You could watch some European leagues if you want higher quality, but time zones makes that a pain.

Talk some sense into your friends though. Seriously.

I hope Miami gets a mls team again. We had the fusion when I was working in NY, so I never got to go. I like having Beckham behind it though. Too bad the city doesn't want to give them a stadium. The Marlins ruined it for everyone. PEACE.

It's a catch 22. Too few top foreign players, league suffers because talent level is lower and top players don't get better due to playing against stiff foreign competition. Skill level looks bad and the league perception suffers.

Too many, and you can't bring up as many players and get them trained in key roles.

But we have MLS and USL Pro and NASL, we're getting better and are growing the local talent pool.

Plus we're building our academies. MLS is only 18 years old. We have a ways to go but we're on the right track. People holding up "Why you no good as EPL" is laughable. We're clearly not. But they only have a hundred years of history on our 5th place sport.

He has been horrid this tourney, but he is absolutely one of the USMNT's best players. No nepotism required.

MLS is on the cusp of becoming huge in the US. It is part of why the US being passed over for world cup etc. is so stupid even with the fifa corruption. Get MLS to the next level and fifa would make a hell of a lot more money than the bribes.

MLS is bringing more people per game than the NBA now and MLS can still have a ton of expansion in the US

I've just been through this so many times that it's depressing. People keep hoping that with good performance in a World Cup, MLS will improve, but honestly I can't see that happening. There's simply not enough time for commercial breaks in a soccer game for it to be huge in the US.

I disagree networks want soccer. ESPN is ticked because they lost the World Cup for 2018 and 2022.
