Just to be clear there are "not real" fans in ALL countries. Just in the US it's overwhelming majority.

Now I know next to nothing about soccer/futbal, but was the American goalie (Howard?) really damn good or is it just me? He seemed to be absolutely on top of shit for the most part.

Howard was Man of the Match. He held the 1-0 which was crucial, albeit Eder is a shit striker that should've scored after that off the post shot by Nani. Howard was out of balance, he only needed to shoot either left or right. He decided to lob it and Howard had that awesome save.

here is a news flash it already is. It is not an elite league but not following it because someone thinks it is infinitely inferior is just plain wrong.

I'm not saying it isn't worth while, more like on a mainstream level in the States and not regional. Because for America we know that's how it works for a sport to be considered popular. I'm perfectly fine following a league that isn't elite. Hell, I watch both NLL and MLL.

It's more than that. There are 152 league-wide international player slots. They started out divided evenly at 8 per team, but teams are allowed to trade them, so there is some disparity now.

8 per team is waay too many

to be a superpower this late in the game u need to minimize the amount of foreign players, it will improve the quality of home grown talent. its the reason why england are crap, all the best players in their league are foreign and english players get pushed to the back of the queue and dont get the play time

Given the level of play for certain games. MLS attendance and viewership borders on absurdity. Most passionate league in the world. No other group of clubs could ride that kind of popularity with those kinds of results.

Sacramento just got a Tier 3 expansion team in the Sacramento Republic FC.
They've had sell out crowds at the university field which seats 27k. Then they built their home field but it only seats 8k. Obviously the rest of the games are sold out.

I'd hope the rest of the MLS leadership is a bit smarter. Why build a 8k stadium when you know you can sell out one more than 3 times the size.

If what I'm reading is correct MLS is going to get 90 mil a year from ESPN/Fox/Univision, while the NHL gets 200 mil a year for their US deal with NBC. So not terrible, but still half of what the 4th U.S. sport gets.

It's a catch 22. Too few top foreign players, league suffers because talent level is lower and top players don't get better due to playing against stiff foreign competition. Skill level looks bad and the league perception suffers.

Too many, and you can't bring up as many players and get them trained in key roles.

But we have MLS and USL Pro and NASL, we're getting better and are growing the local talent pool.

Plus we're building our academies. MLS is only 18 years old. We have a ways to go but we're on the right track. People holding up "Why you no good as EPL" is laughable. We're clearly not. But they only have a hundred years of history on our 5th place sport.
