2014 FIFA World Cup |OT4| What can European men do against such reckless heat?

Going to be a crazy day.

US fans must be rooting for Portugal to win but not by 5 goals or whatever then, right?

Or for a US tie. Or for a Ghana win, but not by enough to upset the goal differential. There's plenty of ways for the US to make it out of the group.

Honestly, coming into this tournament I figured we'd be lucky to be in this position.

Is such a thing even possible at this point?

I think the US would need to beat Germany and Ghana would need a big win over Portugal to make it happen.

wish the MLS would get rid of the playoff/conference/etc structure though. I get that they want it a bit Americanized and the supporters shield exists, but with the league expanding to a good amount of teams, playing every team twice is the best format imo. I guess distance makes that a bit tricky though.

What?!?!? Their coverage has been excellent.

Their coverage of non-USA stuff is actually decent (probably because they have a lot of legacy folks left over from when they had a lot more La Liga/Serie A/Bundesliga rights) but their coverage of USMNT is appalling.

come over to the American soccer thread to learn more about the league and game.

I might do that. It's been pretty fun following GAF threads this World Cup. When is the MLS in season anyway? I've never even seen it on TV while browsing channels or any commercials for it or anything.

It's actually not that bad now. You could watch some European leagues if you want higher quality, but time zones makes that a pain.

Talk some sense into your friends though. Seriously.

Yeah, I tried getting into European leagues after the last World Cup, but couldn't handle the time zone difference and gave up pretty quickly.

Welcome to football.

If you can't take it, stick to hand egg.
Hand egg is my least favorite sport. Most boring piece of shit game ever. I'll never understand how it's so popular here.

I hope Miami gets a mls team again. We had the fusion when I was working in NY, so I never got to go. I like having Beckham behind it though. Too bad the city doesn't want to give them a stadium. The Marlins ruined it for everyone. PEACE.
It would be nice if they did, but I think the #1 thing MLS needs to take into consideration for expansion is the ownership group.

Getting the right owners really helped set Seattle off on the right foot which really heated up the entire Pacific Northwest. I mean of course Portland would be pumped for Soccer, but having an energized fanbase as a rival provides that extra kick. Tampa and Miami getting teams at the same time with the right owners that can create an electric atmosphere would be spectacular.

Bring back the excitement.

No more Alexi Lalas and more Gus Johnson. (Who I like and I think has a great play by play style for soccer)

Gus Johnson is bad right now, but he can be good w/ experience. At least he's got enthusiasm. Alexi Lalas has been at it for fucking ages and is still horrid.

Right now. (Well, it's on break during the group stage of the WC, but will resume shortly)

The MLS season roughly coincides with Baseball season.

ESPN lost the World Cup rights??? yessss their coverage is so fucking bad

Alexi Lalas is trash and their other studio analysts are so-so, but the actual game commentary has been excellent. I've been watching the CBC broadcasts because of 1080i instead of 720p but I really prefer the ESPN commentators to the CBC ones.

It's a catch 22. Too few top foreign players, league suffers because talent level is lower and top players don't get better due to playing against stiff foreign competition. Skill level looks bad and the league perception suffers.

Too many, and you can't bring up as many players and get them trained in key roles.

But we have MLS and USL Pro and NASL, we're getting better and are growing the local talent pool.

Plus we're building our academies. MLS is only 18 years old. We have a ways to go but we're on the right track. People holding up "Why you no good as EPL" is laughable. We're clearly not. But they only have a hundred years if history on our 5th place sport.

the talent gap isnt as big as u may think it is, u got ur messi's on the top tier but under that theres not much in it, football has become a pressing game so as long as you are quick, have good positioning and can control and pass quickly u can hang.

4 foreign players would be ideal... its about the long future, not flavour of the month imo.

The problem with Alexi is that he is never critical with the US ever. Frankly I don't like that in an analyst.

You've gotta be kidding me. Alexi is hit and miss, but Taylor and Ian are excellent.

Man, what a fucking game. Just a mere seconds away from automatically advancing. Oh well, bring on the Germans!

Bah, so close! You gotta play the entire game :(

Sucks, but considering people were debating weather we would even score a goal this is still pretty great how well they've done.
