of course it's a limited team which is why van gaal picked a system that suits them best: 3-5-2/5-3-2. that's what good coaches do, they adapt. 3-5-2/5-3-2 is a system that's perfectly suited for counter-attacking football, but that doesn't automatically mean that you're parking the bus--it depends on your players.

janmaat is a very offensive wingback, and kuyt is originally a winger/striker. wijnaldum was playing instead of de guzman--wijnaldum is more of an attacking midfielder whereas de guzman is a central midfielder who mostly plays right next to de jong. add two forwards, and, on paper at least, you've got quite an offensive team.

the execution could and should be better, though. while it was defensively sound (chile were mostly neutralised), there were still many opportunities that they missed out on when they did have the ball.

Agreed 100%

No, imo you don't have to give cards as long as the match is contained. In other words, as long as it's not escalating.

You don't seem to know the football rules very well. A yellow card is fully deserved when a player tries to trick the referee simulating a fault that never existed.

I think everyone who truly loves football would advocate to erase that disgrace (diving, overacting, etc.). If a referee is okay with that, this will always be there in the field.

Wrong. They will not care at all. All they care for is to win. And they won. Why would anyone care about playing a beautiful game when all they need to do is to park the bus, make the whole sport an ugly and boring fest. Win. Its all that matters anyways. Fuck fun.

You should talk with Meus, he's all for a system where you are rewarded for possession and fun football instead of actually scoring goals. You two could revolutionize the game.

Not questioning Van Gaal's tactical decision. Shit, I would do the same if I have that team to manage. Only lamenting that it worked. Parking the bus makes the sport a boring fest, destroys the fun.

Must have seen different matches, but the matches against Spain and Australia were quite fun. The latter was nerve wrecking.

Yeah, Spain versus Netherlands was so poor to watch. Ten goals man. And as Lineker just tweeted, Robben is the most sensational player in the WC so far.

And the other one will be highlights on Australia television screens for decades to come.

Bringing Bresh on really underlined the lack of depth in the team unfortunately. This time the opposite happened to the other two games - a great first 20 minutes and a rubbish other 70 minutes. Wahey?

Taggert was bosses around by the CBS from Spain.

There is a lack of depth in this team at the World Cup, especially good ball handlers it the midfield (which bresciano is our only one) and an out an out striker when Cahill retires.

However, next World Cup we will have a few central attacking midfielders to pick from - rogic, amini, ikonomides, and armenikas could be anything in the four years time.

The striker is where i see our problem position after Cahill retires. Maybe kruse will play there for the national team. Hopefully skapetis, at stoke, can break into the first team at Stoke soon. He is apparently great but he is very young.

LOL give it a rest. Of course they cared more about winning than playing 'beautifully'. What kind of tournament do you think we're watching here?

I wanted to bet X2 in the croatia match but I can't since my heart wants croatia to win even tho it aint happening

So 1X for me then :/

It'll suck extra hard now if Mexico wins

Nope. Goals are the essence of fun. Possession alone is worth shit. Creativity and talent should be rewarded more than pure discipline and physical fitness. Talent and creativity are significantly underrated in today's Football. It is too easy to park the bus and counter. It makes for a very predictable and boring sport where talent plays second place.

well, when mourinho does it, i kinda hate it, too, although i immensely enjoyed the liverpool beating. but he usually puts one or two perfectly decent attacking players that they spent a shitload of money on on the bench to execute his plan.

van gaal, on the other hands, doesn't have much to play with here--he's practically fielding his best possible team.

(wooden, you are not allowed to respond to the chelsea bit of this post, you're not even at the world cup. please stay home, and be a family man)

Limited team? Van Gaal is the only one with a plan B here. Australia game saw a shake up and from there we dominated. Chile game saw us bringing taller guys such as Fer. Chile had hardly any relevant chances, they were completely neutralized. And again, they looked fit even in injury time.

Its not beautiful, but the days of Bergkamp, Kluivert etc are past us.

Holland should be more focused in ball possession though.

The Dutch have always put beautifull performances infront of result based performances. I like the latter if it gives us a 5-1 win over ruling world champion Spain and a great Australia and Chile

you clearly must have missed the past six years where Barcelona and Spain steamrolled over everyone in their path by strangling their opponents to death with sheer creativity

there's no right or wrong way to win; whatever gets the result is the "right" way. sometimes that involves attacking talent and tactics, other times that involves defensive talent and tactics—these things are heavily reliant on the resources at your disposal (especially in international football where you can't just buy players) and come and go in cycles anyways.

Tbh, pretty much every team wants to win this world cup, if they have the choice between winning and "having fun" then I guess their choice would be pretty obvious. But whatever, tears, sodium chloride etc.

Hmmm, no. Holland played the same the whole match. It's just when Sampaoli sent Valdivia to the field, our defense got much more vulnerable. As someone said, it was a gamble and it didn't end well for us.

Let's ignore the fact that their last 2 matches have been decided by 2nd half substitutions. Perhaps Chile's decisions helped the process, but still that isn't the complete story.

Flattered by how Van Gaal planned the game;
Neherlands played with five defenders waiting for the counter the whole match, with 40% Ball Possession and 25 fouls against 14.

Well played Van Gaal.
Congrats Nether-Gaf.

Not saying they are wrong. Win is everything. After all is just a business, right?

i'm kinda on your side here. i truly love beautiful football, but sometimes it's just not possible. we have to endure, ghost. take it. we'll hate them for it, but that's the point of the netherlands, they can be the outcast. they can make the choice that no one else can make, the right choice.

Them points.

Mr Expert, you can say all you want but what you want would end up a in rain of cards for both sides and that will not help the quality of the match. No one got hurt, no really harsh fouls where made (except maybe once). The ref also knew that both sides would go through so they don't want to risk injuries or red cards, he was expecting minor fouls. He got it right. He whistled a good match.

Oh well, it's now or never for Mexico, i didn't expect much from the team before the first game but they have shown they can play a good game of futbol, Gio, Oribe and Herrera need to have a great game for us to stand a chance. We need goals.
