I really reeally want greece to win 1-0 tomorrow. (Assuming japan loses or ties v colombia)

That way, they progress to round of 16 on only one goal scored in the entire group stage. Unfortunately this isnt the same brick wall defense of 2004 so its unlikely.

But it would be awesome.

Actually, knowing our team, I'm worried about this next game. The second they start thinking they might actually be good is the second they start losing.

Plus, the game is in the southern part of Brazil, where Costa Rica's adaptation to the weather up north is negated.

Troubling, since Costa Rica really needs to win the group to get their round-of-16 match in Recife.

This might not have anything to do with the WC, but who here likes watching Futsal?

Futsal only shows up in Brazilian television during the World Cup, unfortunately. But it's fun. It always eases the pain of the mourning period when the Olympic Games end.

That's eerily close to Olympics numbers. I think nationalistic pride and hype drives people to the World Cup now especially with ESPN inflating the team's chances. As well as there being nothing but early season baseball to watch if you like sports.

I'm sure someone will think this is great news for MLS but it's like saying the Olympics is great news for pole vaulting or some other sport played in it. It's my suspicion that there won't be much carryover.

things get better for the MLS after every WC, so yes it is

Just cuz all those 25m people are not gonna stick with Soccer as a sport, does'nt mean many among them wont.

its progress

MLS will always be at the bottom for numerous reasons such as quality of talent, competition, and importance. NHL, MLB, NFL, NBA will always be above it when it comes to relevance.

Every other sport you see the best players in the world and the championship means they are the best in the world. The MLS just can't compete with that.

The US needs to win, Germany cant be trusted. They are the reason why the last group games are played at the same time.

US can draw their way too victory as well right? Portugal will probably show up for the last game like spain did.

bolded is not true. Financial muscle is one thing but saying that those three metrics are always gonna be at the bottom is just ludicrous.

It's so true man. Maybe it can give baseball a run since a lot of people think it's boring but hockey is way more likely to take off than MLS. NHL is the future.

I think their performances inflated their chances. I don't think any ESPN analyst even picked them to get out of the group.

God forbid ABC postponed their super anticipated season premier of Wipeout! They must've known the US World Cup game on a Sunday afternoon would've messed their ratings good and this stuck with their regular prime time programming. Christ.

Congratz, America. I'm proud of all of you, that's a lot of progress and huge numbers for any tv show. Especially in smack dab in the middle of June.

I've seen this mistake one too many times in this thread. Is it a common mistake for Americans to make? It's Colombia, for crying out loud, not Columbia.

Yeah, DC is short for District of Columbia, Columbia is a common city name throughout the States, and there's Columbia University, so most Americans just assume it's spelled that way because we see it spelled with a u so frequently.

I imagine England will thrash Costa Rica today and everyone will ask why wasn't Phil "Double Hattrick" Jones playing the entire tournament.

You lost your credibility right there. NHL is popular, of course, but the future? Don't make me laugh. These World Cup numbers shatter anything the NHL has come up with and this will only help soccer in general in your country. I won't say soccer is the future, but I'll go on a limb and say hockey definitely isnt!
