i might have missed it, but is it even theoretically possible that fifa can ban a player from club football?

Yeah FIFA can impose a ban across all football competitions and as far as I remember it has only ever happened once, to the one and only Eric Cantona.

Let's hope FIFA have the balls to do the same again here!!!

Has anything been done to this guy or is it a slap on the wrist?

Fall over after being bitten though? Come on. I'd just turn round and smack the cunt and then complain.

And then he would have been sent off and his team would be down to nine men, and if they went through he would have been suspended.
Everyone would have called him an idiot for reacting and destroying his team's chances.

That's what I would have done during my Sunday football. In the World Cup maybe I would have fallen over and cried in fairness...

Suarez has said himself, he will do anything to gain an advantage, getting people sent off, harassing them, throwing ppl off their game. In football, so much of the game is about focus. Clearly Italy lost focus after that at the corner where they scored the goal. Four Uruguayan guys jumped at the same spot to head the ball in. One Italian player got crushed in between and had no chance.

Suarez is a dirty player, but maybe that's how he was brought up, scrapping and fighting. Maybe where he lives, there's a lawlessness where he can get away with things like this. And then in a split second on the world stage where he has the pressure of the whole country behind him, and he needs to win at all costs, he goes and does something stupid.

Not saying I condone it at all, or that I'm a Suarez sympathiser (I'm an evertonian after all) but that's probably what was going through his mind.

Still he needs a lengthy ban and needs some psychological help to ensure he acts professionally.

He didn't break the rules. The rules say that if a non-GK player touches the ball with their hand the other team gets a free kick, or penalty in this case. He used the rule to his advantage.

Handling the ball is listed as an "infringement" in FIFA's Laws of the Game, to be punished by the awarding of a free kick or penalty. What is it an infringement of if not the rules?

Many South American players have gone through a similar experience if not worst than him, but you don't see them acting like cannibal on the pitch, he has mental issues, a 1 year ban from club and country giving him some time to fix his mental issues

Reminds me of this:

I wouldn't be surprised if Suarez was motivated to bite someone because of betting houses.

lol come on. Suarez makes crazy cash every single week, he doesn't need to do something like this for betting houses. The players involved in this kind of match fixing are mostly lower division players not making this kind of money... Who are willing to risk both jail time and suspension from the sport forever for some easy cash.

Players and officials who were found guilty of matchfixing have been given worldwide bans, but as far as I'm aware only Cantona's been given a worldwide ban for anything other than matchfixing.

Mutu and Ferdinand for failing and missing drugs tests respectively

Yeah that's why I mentioned Cantona as it was an on-field incident in a league game which he got 8mths for across all competitions.

It's unbelievable that after missing I don't know how many games last season for biting Ivanovic, now he goes and does it again. Stupid doesn't even begin to describe Luis.

FIFA wouldn't ban him, hell how many thread Suarez contribute on Neogaf alone?
Blatter love controversy! Controversy bring eye balls, fuck fair game.
Suarez is walking advertising of Football. I bet his next game will be the highest rating of all world cup just because people will tune in to watch him bite again.

Money talks, just saying lol. People always want more, even billionaires.

Suarez is a dick, and should be punished pretty severely given that he's done it before, the people calling for like year long bans from football are crazy

Cantona kicked a fan in the face and got 9 months, Keane deliberately ended someone's career and got 8 games (I think). Shearer booted Lennon in the face and got nothing. Pepe did this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKt4IBxD5oo and got a 10 game ban. FIFAs previous record for the longest ban (8 games) was for when a player deliberately elbowed another in the face and broke their nose

A bite is bad (really really bad), but worse things have been done in football before, and all had way lower punishments, any ban longer than 15/20 games wouldn't be remotely consistent with previous bans for more serious incidents

My point is that committing fouls is part of the game. I wouldn't say a team cheated a game if they were given an offside, or committed a penalty kick, or got yellow and red cards, etc.

I somewhat agree, at least don't care about defining what is or isn't cheating. Players constantly exploit the rules and tries to do whatever necessary to gain an advantage, which is fine by me, if anything can be too easily exploited then Fifa should fix it in the rules.

Keane deliberately ended someone's career and got 8 games (I think).

3 for the original tackle, 5 when he admitted it was deliberate. It also didn't end Haaland's career, so there's that. (Keane's tackle hit Haaland's right knee, while it was long term injury to Haaland's left knee that ended his career.)

If it was a calculated move to shock the Italians into thinking more about him then defending their goal it was pretty brilliant. But on the other hand he was biting people long before this when the stakes were not so high so it's more likely he is just a little crazy and needs to be kept out of the game for 10 years or so.

One dude who is a known hothead journalist mentioned that in passing when the first "what is the shop!" photos were being thrown around. Hardly represents "Uruguayan media".

Don't put this on us. Everyone's recognizing what a dumbass he was in every single outlet. TV's been on besides me all day.

You should spend more time in this thread defending this guys despicable actions as much as you can, it's building up my respect meter for you, it's almost depleted now.

What is your real life name Sepp Blatter or something?

If only Suarez worked for Valve, Salsa could be complete!

Ok, so he deliberately gave someone a serious long term injury instead, and only got a 3 game ban - my point still stands, other players have done things which are much worse and didn't get punishments even approaching some of the long ones people are advocating for him.
