Well, GAF has a group channel thingy. Match up with people from here and you'll probably avoid that. PUG pvp is always gonna have that somewhere, but if it's all going south and someone is hurling insults rather than giving you constructive criticism or feedback, mute 'em. Also the stuff Alur said.

My brother and I got in last week, this game is really addicting. Been having a blast, a lot of stuff already feels really good. Only big issue I'm having is that I lose track of my mouse, surprisingly. Don't have that issue in any other MOBA style games, at all. Has led to a few Hyperion ults going astray, or missing skill shots. Also kind of wish you could earn gold somehow in co-op, even if it was a greatly reduced amount. I get why you can't, but I've run into a lot of people that prefer co-op, can play and relax, have a little fun blowing shit up, etc.

I thought I'd miss having a shop, but the talents do a real nice job of giving my characters some mid-game diversity.

In general, the game seems to have a pretty understanding group of players currently (since it's Alpha, probably) and harassment is at a minimal. That said, playing coop or practice mode is...well, it's really only useful for teaching you the abilities of your chosen hero IMO. The AI is pretty terrible in my experience compared to real people.

My advice is you're going to have to try it sooner or later, and it's better to take the lumps in Alpha and see how you fare and if you don't like it you just don't play it again. The game isn't toxic yet, so don't worry about that. Just try to follow the couple of things I posted above and when you play with someone good or helpful invite them to your group. Within a few days you'll have several folks to play with. That's pretty much what I did.

Oh, and play a ranged class to start in Versus. So much easier to survive.

Thanks for the advice! I'll jump in tonight and give it a try.

I'm in /GAF. There is pretty much never anyone in there, though. Miletius is the only person from GAF I ever see on on a regular basis.

It'd be neat to get a full GAF group going one night.

Sonofa-- well, I'll jump in when I get the chance.

Just got into the Alpha, and I'm having a blast.

I've played a lot of League, Smite, Awesomenauts, Dota 2, Dawngate, Infinite Crisis, and a few others, and so far - Heroes is turning into my favorite. It takes a lot of ideas I like from the other Mobas, strips away the things I don't personally care for, and leaves me with just the right amount of everything for fun, quick games that have big plays and a lot of fluid tactics thanks to the map objectives. I'm in love with it.

Personally, I love most games average 20-30 minutes. DotA2's epic 60 minute structure is nice but it doesn't really allow me to play other games.

Not sure if I should be happy, or sad.

Hooo boy, I've been gone for a couple days. Mostly been playing in the morning just to clear out my quest list. Even if Zagara isn't out today I should be on in the evenings trying to setup groups with GAFfers more often.

And yeah, the channel is "GAF", not "NeoGAF". I started it when I got in a few months ago. The best and worst thing about the channels is that you can type /who to see who's online at the time, but from popping in at different times of day I've noticed people show up at a wide range of times...

Ah, looks like Zagara is coming just when I'm going to be out of town for the week... Oh well. I'll try her out on Saturday.

I'd love to team up with ya'll at some point. I've suffered a few crushing defeats recently due to lack of communication. So demoralizing!

Zagara trailer

I didn't play Heart of the Swarm, so I don't know who this is.

She's Kerrigan's sassy second in command pretty much...

That makes it look like she'll be quite a strong lane pusher. Get your creep down and control a lane sort of thing...

Also, Anub'arak is in that video with a nice looking model at 0:30. Super excited to play him... That's a giant bug tank I can get behind....

Not sure if I should be happy, or sad.

Happy you made it, but sad that's all there is to do with each hero. You must have Murky down to a science now, though.

Yep it would be great.

I've gotten to the point where I only play classes I'm learning in pick up groups now just so I don't get as frustrated since I'm doing something new. I've started on Brightwing now, and I play my regular heroes with friends I've made in the game when they are on. I also try to snag a player or two per game if I notice anyone particularly good. Most people are looking for that friend EXP boost as well.

Also, Anub'arak is in that video...

Anub'arak is the most important part of that trailer.

This is correct. I'll be all about some Anub'arak. Zagara who?

Having a hard time deciding who to play as now... Was really hoping Zagara was out this week since I want something different. Not a fan of abathur's playstyle and while I love Gazlowe, I'm surprisingly terrible at him.

You could always just play more Murky.

After 100+ matches of Murky in the last month I'm ready for something different :)

(edit) Maintenance is happening in 2 1/2 hours with no scheduled time for the servers coming back up, this is probably Zagara update!

Don't feel like taking screen caps, but if you check right now:

http://us.battle.net/heroes/en/blog/
In our latest update the Heroes of The Storm Technical Alpha, we released Zagara as a new playable Hero. We’ve uploaded a video to show off her brand new skin: Insectoid Zagara.

And one of the letters is a link: file:///C:/Users/tfrazier/Documents/Link%20Patch%20Notes

But when you go to the blog page at http://us.battle.net/heroes/en/blog/14525400/skin-preview-insectoid-zagara-6-24-2014

In the next patch for Heroes of The Storm Technical Alpha, we’re releasing Zagara as a new playable Hero! What’s more, we have a preview of her snazzy new skin to share with you that’s sure to send you skittering: Insectoid Zagara!

In other words, they flubbed up and either posted the articles too early, or screwed up in launching Zagara :) Fine by me, will finally have something to spend my money on and have a new character to play.

Anyone else think that the best parts of the skins are their 'lore' descriptions?

From everything I've read (I came in right after the last hero release, mind you) the hero was announced on Monday/Tuesday but hasn't been going live to til Thursday. I'd imagine they are doing the same thing here.

They are great. I wish there was more description, myself, because I enjoy them so much. Also silently wishing Li Li had a skin that was worth having but at least my Brightwing looks cool.

Looking good overall.

I see they finally had the sense to put Psionic Storm on Tassadar.

I really like how well the heroes fit what the characters actually do in their respective games. It makes some of them feel quite different from other MOBAs. Tassadar without Psionic Storm was kind of a standout against that trend though. He was much closer to a sentry than a High Templar.

Zagara I'm excited to try as well since I've always been an RTS fan and putting in more RTS elements is a strong positive for me.

Yeah, was really excited to see that change on him. Looking into that first thing when servers are back up!

Also looking to see what visual improvements they put on Arthas and Raynor, it has me curious!

Knights

Sorcerer
No longer shields other Knights
Damage aura has been removed
Now heals other Knights and surrounding minions.

No!!!!!

My mercs got hella nerfed, my poor damage aura.

Sonya/Barbarian getting a new talent, War Paint, is something I had dreamed of. Unfortunately, it also comes with my worst fear; it'll replace or compete with her leech health off Slam talent. The new Whirlwind talent probably replaces one of the Whirlwind talents at level 13, and I'm curious as to which one it does. My bet is on the increased radius talent. I also wonder if the new Tornado talent will synergize with the Whirlwind slows talent. Unfortunately, the new level 16 talent might actually replace the Whirlwind slow completely to give way to the new Whirlwind duration talent. Also, thank god they reduced the cost of Whirlwind.

The new Spear and new Slam talent are both excellent though.

New change to Brightwing means I actually have an ultimate I'm excited about using.

The Knights change is a buff, technically. Knights were the weakest mercenaries if they were left without Hero protection. Now they should be able to push down the front walls + fort easily if left unattended, just like the other two merc types.

Tyrael was nerfed real hard as far as I'm concerned. That respawn time reduction might have been a smidge too powerful, but without it his innate is just going to feel weak again.

I can't believe Tychus was nerfed.

Reading patch notes right now... FINALLY we can report players for AFK/harassment after a match is over and you can put them on ignore in the middle of a match.

Liking the changes to Malfurion, if Zagara doesn't pay off, I'll go back to playing him again I think.

(edit) Holy crap, just made it to Murky's changes... These weren't the nerfs I was expecting... Essentially only his special was nerfed and everything else was buffed. Crazy.

Well, except the map ping thing... but that's hardly an issue.

(edit 2)

Can someone make sense of this one for me...

Code:
Siege Giants

Defending Siege Giant attacks can no longer be dodged.
Siege Giant Attack Damage has been reduced from 100 to 80 in order to compensate for this change.

So... does that mean they can't be dodged after they have been captured? Or does this mean you can't avoid damaging while trying to cap them? Cause the former makes them much better mercs to cap, the ladder makes Murky completely unable to cap them.

Zagara sounds neat, I'm excited. Anub I hope will be interesting as well.

Gonna roll all bug repertoire. Plus Gazlowe :p

I assume that the fact that I enjoy this game so much as someone who hasn't gotten into MOBAs means it's either a really good one or a terrible one.

My best guess, defending means defending themselves from capture. So the Siege Giants change means that you can't dodge their attacks while trying to capture them. Which unfortunately means that it'll be much harder to cap them early for every hero beyond Gazlowe, Abathur, and probably Zagara, grr.

That is depressing... Sneaking behind enemy lines as Murky and Wrathing a nearby giant camp early was a great strategy on some maps (especially Raven Lord).

Oh! And in case anyone missed it, this patch will mark them actively inviting Europeans into the beta (versus hand selecting a few).

On the other hand, depending on how the numbers work out with attack speed changes, it will indirectly buff Vampiric (which I use on Tychus and sometimes Hammer).

I worry about this too.

dammit, this probably means I can't LVL1 or 2 Giants with Valla anymore.

But we now get more XP for babysitting Murky, so that's good...

One of the biggest perks of the knights was turning Valla into a 1 hit anything player, or making Gazlow's turrets super deadly. They were the only mercs worth grouping with as the other mercs could do just fine on their own. Essentially knights actually offered a reason to group with them. The damage aura gave enough boost to actually overpower a double healer team.

I'm sad to see the change as it will significantly alter my strategy and effectively turn all the mercs into a capture and forget ordeal.

My little push at 8:25, was only possible with the knight mercs, without them the opposing teams Raynor would have forced me out.

I know what the Knights could do. I've lead a number of groups to game ending pushes thanks to them. I'm just saying it's technically a buff because they, by themselves, should have a lot more survivability now than before. They couldn't even knock gates down reliably if you captured them too early. They were the only mercs you could push powerfully with, but they were also the only mercs that were worthless if you didn't.

Yeah I like having a little differentiation in the strategy, making things more generic doesn't sound like it will increase the fun...

Nice to see they improved murky's laning capabilities. I think he is a great offensive character but the poison stacks lasted WAAAAAAY too long.

This maintenance is killing me... after weeks of barely wanting to play, I want to seriously dive into the game again and it's been down for over 4 hours.

Li Li got the nerf hammer pretty hard:

Fast Feet (Trait)
Movement Speed bonus reduced from 20% to 15%

This change was obvious. Knew it was coming. It's just too easy to escape with Li Li.

Jug of 1,000 Cups
Cooldown increased from 50 to 70 seconds

This will hurt. The great thing about pushing with Li Li was clearing a group of heroes could allow you to regain your Jugs about the time the first two or three respawned. It was definitely a little OP. Now those epic pushes will be much different as the opposing heroes will be back and engaged before Jugs pops again.

Healing gained per level reduced from 96 to 72
Mana restoration scaling has been removed

And less healing, plus mana becoming more of a commodity. In other words, welcome back to the game other support healers!

As a dude who mained Li Li (I heal in pretty much every MMO I play and this is my first MOBA) this hurts, but most of it was probably necessary.

Other surprises for me...

Falstad:

Flight (Z)
Fly Away (Talent)
Flight cooldown reduction reduced from 20 to 15 seconds

Falstad was already crazy mobile. Glad I had already bought him and started working on him!

Meanwhile Brightwing...

Phase Shift (Z)
Cooldown increased from 20 to 30 seconds

I don't get this. Why reduce Falstad's and increase Brightwing's "flight" by double what Falstad's was? I know it isn't apples to apples, but it still doesn't add up for me. Brightwing was really good, but so was Falstad. Why is one getting a buff and the other twice the nerf?

All in all, glad to see some changes. Looking forward to see a new hero in game and hoping that Anub'arak is coming soon!

Honestly even with those nerfs I think she will still be the strongest healer.

She just scales her healing so well with an all in healing build that it feels more like just making her not make you auto win 80%+ of team fights in the game and have to really invest in healing talents to max out her potential.

Same. Girlfriend has a dinner tonight so I was looking forward to vegging out and playing. Instead my sister is coming over and we are going out to dinner. So I guess, victory in a way, for being social at least.

Yeah, I can see that, but they did nerf her scaling as well. I agree she'll still be the strongest healer, but that's kind of by default. The others just don't quite have access to the degree of healing abilities she does, IMO. Hopefully it'll get folks spreading out on the supports, though. I pretty much only ever see Li Li and Malfurion healing. Most of the Brightwings I see are DPS oriented.

Log into the game and the first thing I see?

People in general chat bitching that Sonya is too strong now and that they "can't believe they buffed her."

lol.

People in general chat bitching that Sonya is too strong now and that they "can't believe they buffed her."

Dat MMO mentality. It didn't just become OP, it was always already OP before now but no one knew. Of all the heroes, Sonya wasn't in need of a buff? LOL. You'd hope people like that wouldn't be in alpha, but they're everywhere.

EDIT: BTW, the new scoreboard in game is awesome. I love being able to see how much siege damage, hero damage, and healing I am doing. On the flip side, that thing I said on the last page about HotS Alpha not being toxic yet...this is gonna get it going in a hurry. Nothing like a little in game recount to bring out the trolls.
