Idle Thumbs Megathread | Indepth discussion inbetween horsebags and birdsounds

The worst part about the current ads is that living in Europe I can't even consider any of the advertised services. At least Audible and Hover were available worldwide, I even bought a domain from Hover after hearing about them on Thumbs.

Don't nature box ship internationally? Maybe I'm misremembering.

I am thinking of grabbing a hover domain. Or even a squarespace thing.

damn thing works

Really enjoyed this episode! Danielle's perspective really benefits the podcast.

Nope, they don't. Which is a shame, because the podcast ads acutally made me check out their site. I could get most of the stuff they sell anyway, but I might've actually tried their service. But I guess shipping food intercontinentally might be too much of a hassle for a small company.

To be fair, I'm sure the Thumbs would gladly advertise services that are also available to their international listeners.

I use a squarespace page for my personal portfolio. Gotta say it's pretty dang nice all things considered. You get a large amount of flexibility over the size and placement of elements, plus the templates are just super minimal that it's hard to make them look crappy.

I actually found the site before Idle Thumbs/Giant Bombcast started advertising it via an industry colleague. It felt like I was retroactively influenced by them through the powers of the moon wizards...or something.

Here's the site if you're curious.

The ad reads don't do much for me, since I'm in Australia and those things don't reach Australia.

Same. As someone not in the US, the ads are really pointless to me so I just hit the forward button on the podcast app a couple of times to skip through them.

I dont mind it though. If it helps pay the bills, then keep doing it.

Really enjoyed this episode, especially the UI talk. It's amazing how rarely UI design, specifically in AAA mega-huge games, successfully straddles the line between being aesthetically pleasing and being functional, and Bungie has always been one of the few that consistently get it right.

Jake and/or Chris, if you're interested in more on that topic, there's a guy with a UI-focused youtube channel that did an overview/analysis/whatever of the Destiny UI here - it goes into why they made the choice to go with the cursor, and Dave Candland, the UI Lead at Bungie, confirmed that the video basically hit the nail on the head on that.

Yeah, it's fine even if it doesn't affect me.

Anyway, regarding the "The Wizard came from the moon." line, I missed the reveal at Sony's press conference (that's where it came from right?) on account of sleeping in, and I don't know who Peter Dinklage is, so whenever I read that line on Gaf, I always imagined Pietro's voice from Dishonoured doing it because of how stilted that line is to read.

This is the second time in the last week that I've read or heard someone talking about the mysticism and magic in Dune.

There is a (soft) scientific explanation for everything in that book, from the Bene Gesserit prophecies, the Voice, the navigator's ability to fold space, why there are no AIs or advanced machines, everything.

I think Lynch's terrible movie has impacted people's memories of Dune more than they or anyone might like.

Nature Box is actually the only podcast advertisement I've ever been interested in and I have the same problem :( there's a UK equivalent in graze.com but it sounds worse looking at some comparisons

I dont know if Chris has seen that movie, but even if he has I think the book is by far his primary reference. Whether or not there is a soft scientific explanation for everything in that book is, in my opinion, not that relevant in the face of how it is presented to (and conveyed by) the characters in the story. It may be cool to be able to dig into it and find that there is a scientific reason behind each choice, but it is framed in the novel in a way that straddles the line between religious magic and pure science, and that line-straddling is, I think, something Chris is drawn to in that series, and that era of sci-fi.

Naturebox really is good, but I wish I could just buy stuf rather than dealing with the subscription. Also, not enough low carb stuff :[

You don't say!

Regardless of what people think of this particular company it is nice that the advertisers Thumbs use don't create conflicts of interest. If they followed the lead of many websites then podcasts about games would be wrapped in adverts for those same games.

Take note thumbs - as an important robotics watchdog you must never accept advertising from those companies either.

To be fair, the only game company interested in podcast advertisements in the last few years was Sega for their mobile game.
The big game companies know that they really don't need to pay game companies to talk about games they're already going to talk about anyway.

On the ads themselves, I've learned to just ignore them because every podcast has the same three sponsors. I'm just waiting for Idle Thumbs to start advertising Harry's razors and have all three of them talk about how hard it is to buy a razor at a drug store so they all get them mailed to them instead. lol

Does Dune hold up or does it read like a tweener book? I read Ender's Game for the first time when i was 24 and, while i did enjoy it, it felt like something i should've read when i was 13 while i was grinding worms in FF7.

Also, is it a commitment in the sense that i won't feel satisfied if I just read Dune by itself?

I think it's still interesting to read. If you don't expect action in every chapter then you'll be fine. Actually, some of the chapters in the middle (when stuff actually happens) are among the best genre fiction I've read. Herbert worked around the fact that computers weren't a thing back then in a neat way and most of the time you forget that the universe doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.
All in all, I really liked how he tackled the topic of religion and prophecies. What I didn't like was the negative portrayal of women and homosexuals.

And no, you're fine with just reading the first book.

sci fi weirdness: Jack Vance. RIP.
The comic adaption of Moon Moth is a great entry point, very Left Hand of Darkness, a man travels to a planet and is unfamiliar with the culture. A little bit Borges-esque as well. Everyone has to wear a mask and play special instruments when talking.

Anyone else completely sick of podcast ads? I honestly couldn't dislike any brands more than hulu+, lootcrate, and audible at this point, and coming up on it is nature box. It's probably because I listen to a few different casts with the same disruptive advertising, but man I've just started to skip the bits.

I saw they did the survey thing to try to get some different and more interesting ads, but I'd love the option to pay for an adless cast.

Id be more annoyed if the casts i listened to did them straight, but most of them dont. Even the Thumbs' "we're doing a bland ad with a wink and a nudge" shtick from last week was enjoyable. Giant Bomb's and MBMBAM's ad sections are phenomenal (although the canned ads for other Maximum Fun shows on mbmbam less so)

The only time I skipped ads was when Jeff Garlin was doing his podcast because he'd do like 8 reads a show, and he tended to just read the ad copy straight. I guess Id be more annoyed if most of the shows I listened to operated like that instead of "two ad reads that are humorous and entertaining"

Is MBMBAM still contracted to that hilarious sex toy shop for ad reads?

I should probably start listening again. There was a while there where I just couldn't handle the amount of goofs coming my way

no i wish they were, but their current ad reads are still pretty good. they get good goof mileage out of how shitty they are on actually selling something

I miss the Extreme Restraints ads, they definitely squeezed out the last few comedy drops from the material though.

Don't care about podcast ads much, they pay the podcaster and are easy to skip if needed. Plus it feels a little more like real radio with them in.

Danielle is an awesome addition to the show. Only helps that she also plays a bunch of games to help fill the gaps when Nick isn't there :-P
