Idle Thumbs Megathread | Indepth discussion inbetween horsebags and birdsounds

Danielle is an awesome addition to the show. Only helps that she also plays a bunch of games to help fill the gaps when Nick isn't there :-P

Definitely. One of my favorite game podcasting personalities now.

Also, thanks for clueing me into Capsule. Definite purchase.

So Star Citizen is just straight up, unapologetic P2W game? I dont know much about that game but from IT and from some other tid bits that I have read, it does seem that way.

Is there some balancing that I am not aware of?

Also their website, Jesus WTF. I can see now why Chris was just so confused with the whole thing. As someone who hasnt been following this closely, its nuts. I cant even find a place to buy the game. There is a pledge section but I have no idea what I would want to get to just play the game.

Saying the game is Pay to Win implies that there's something to win. Right now it's basically just a Skinner box

Has that ever been stated?

Some in-game items may be available as microtransactions, but we will NEVER sell anything that can’t be acquired through honest (and fun!) gameplay.

Can I upgrade to a bigger ship?
Yes! You will always have your ‘pledge’ ship which you can upgrade by pledging additional money through launch, and you can purchase and fly others to your heart’s content in the finished game. Star Citizen will feature plenty of other ships and we expect players will want to earn credits and figure out which suits their particular style of play best.

how much time do you reckon they'll equate to $40,000?
Titans in EVE take like 2 years of advancing your skills and they cost maybe $3k XD

oh my god, Sean's boxing story was a psychologist's dream

This episode is super enjoyable. This cast lineup is fantastic! (Sorry Sean, I'm picturing him just twiddling his thumbs in the room next door)

Well, seeing as he was benched for this one, it's more likely that his thumbs were... idle.

Glad to see the show evolving in such a positive direction though. Danielle is cool. But seriously, just throw a fifth mic in there on the occasions when your schedules all happen to line up. I really don't think any listeners would mind. The thought of Sean standing in the other room, wistfully pressing his hand against the glass door and longing for the laughter and bad puns within before slouching off into the rainy night (probably listening to some smokey sax on his phone) makes me sad.

Also, does this mean someone eventually has to do a portrait of Danielle to accompany the others? I know it's early days yet, but I'm picturing a St. Francis of Assisi style oil work of her surrounded by the protagonists of all the crazy animal platformers she's talked about. For reference:

I think what the Thumbs has been missing was someone actively working in the gaming journalism area who is essentially forced to have an analytical perspective of a wide variety of games.

I realize I am late to realizing this, but I just learned that Danielle is a permanent addition to the podcast. That's such fantastic news, she's such a great presence on the show.

Weird, I directly copy-pasted the URL from your post and it loaded up just fine for me.

I swear it wasn't working all morning but you're right, it's up now.

Also curse you idle thumbs. Why you gotta talk about the ducktales game AFTER the steam sale instead of during it ahhhhh

I cant deny that I was mostly attracted to teleglitch because of the super high ceiling 3D effect, coupled with low res textured aesthetic. Sounds like I should play it, ideally with Chris.

Teleglitch is wonderful! A real treat of a game. You'll be always on your toes with your heart on your throat as you try to clear each room. Also, hilarious self inflicted deaths will abound. Lots of them. And those are always cool entertainment for a stream. :P

I was listening to the Idle Thumbs episode where Nick goes to Disneyland (which is hilarious) but now I notice every single time someone says "Now here's the thing...".

That bit (half jokingly said?) about Spelunky kinda ruining other games for kids who play it as their first game is kinda wierd to see first hand.

My neice (who is 10) used to watch me play games. She never really played anything herself (except a few times taking the controller when I was playing Halo and shooting at the ground non stop) but Spelunky caught her attention last year. I think it was the cutesy art style.

It takes a couple of weeks or so get familiar with the controller (this being her first game) and the controls. And after that we play a LOT of co op. She would play solo as well but she still preffered co op cause it had a little more room for mistakes and I could carry her (literally at times :P) through the levels somewhat.

I actually ended up having a lot of fun with her so I figure we should give some other games a shot. She is totally excited about that concept, so I picked up Rayman Origins and a couple of those Lego games a little while ago. Its the same concept (2dish) since I figure that she cant quite get the hang of FPS or TPS controls yet (although she loves watching me play BF for some reason).

And she just cant get into either one of those games at all. Part of it is that those games seem baby-ish ("You dont have to start from the begining everytime? Why not?") but I think a large part of it is the random ness is missing. Spelunky is a different game everytime you play it, every crate you see is a mystery box with the potential of having something amazing in it. By comparision, Rayman or Batman is just the same track over and over again.

So ..... I dunno. I guess I should have started her off with Mario or something. :P

Edit As a side note its hilarious how optimistic she is when she is playing Spelunky Solo. She can make it to the jungle on a good run at best (getting to Ice caves once was a super proud acheivement for her). But damn if she is leaving the mines without the udjet eye. "I wanna go to the black market and get the ankh." every single time. :D

I was literally getting ready to write an email saying Danielle should be a permanent addition when Chris explained that.

Really happy about it. It seems like her gaming knowledge base complements the guys'.

Can you send this in to questions@idlethumbs.net? It will make it at least SLIGHTY more likely that I remember it for next weeks episode.

For Jake or anyone else who doesn't know much about Dota, but is interested in watching The International:

NEW Dota Newcomers Broadcast

New to Dota? Or maybe you play Dota but have never gotten interested in the professional side of the game. Welcome to the Newcomer's Broadcast, an English stream happening alongside the main stream, featuring commentary aimed at easing people into understanding the exciting world of BKBs, tri-lanes, and counter-picks.
I imagine this will also be available as a broadcast selection in the client.

I'm a fan of shaking things up. Get's a little tiresome hearing Sean dominate the conversation, anyhow.

Danielle's a great addition. Never hurts to inject a little diversity to the conversation, lest things get stale.

You know how when there's a tv show and all your friends love this one character and you can't stand them, hoping someday they get written off? But then you decide to give up and just stop watching the show.

Yeah...guess thumb cast isn't for me anymore :(

i figured danielle would be fairly uncontroversial, just because she doesn't really alter the vibe of the show. what are you guys finding frustrating about her?

breckon's wii u experience was hilarious

Glad I'm not the only one.

That makes 3 of us, but we're definitely in the minority :/

You would think people would have gotten used to Jake by now, but I guess not.

Yeah, she fits in like a glove I dont really get it.

I think adding Danielle is a bit of fresh air honestly, and it's not like the others change their behavior when she's around. She's fun, she offers some much needed different perspectives and she knows what she's talking about. Also, she plays games.

I hope they'll talk about 'Mountain' on the next ep. I'm sure it caught their attention, if only because Double Fine is publishing it. It's the perfect game for Jake - you don't even have to play it. It plays itself!

But seriously, I'm very interested in hearing someone talk about it. I haven't found any insightful articles about it or anything, and I've been contemplating what the game is for me; either a charming little app that calms me down while I'm working, or one step too far in trying to be artsy. I'm a big fan of the guy who made it though. For those who don't know, he made the animations for the game the protagonist in 'Her' (the movie) plays, as well as several other animations. This is one of my favorites, and it actually really impacted me when I saw it a couple of years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2YdJy0w66Y (Please Say Something, a short about - possibly - domestic abuse).

The game isn't nearly as impactful for me, but I might be missing the point. I'm not sure if there's enough there for the Thumbs to talk about, but hell, I'll request it anyway.
