Shovel Knight |OT| The 8-bit adventures of Butt Butt Goes to Europe & Australia

Welp looks like I know where my 15$ of eshop credit is going :-) Leaning towards Wii U since I'm heavily considering selling my 3ds in July.

All the side stages are fucking fantastic! I am already at the last three knight stages, and I'm a bit worried about how long the game actually is. It's also not very hard at all yet, though the level design is completely sublime. Maybe that's why it's not hard, kinda? Everything is just so well-made that it's almost always obvious what you're supposed to do and it's just a matter of executing it, which isn't all that hard either considering the controls are completely perfect. What an interesting dilemma :P

Just a reminder that you get a bonus mode if you put in "IM&SGC14" as your name for a save file. It's basically a score attack mode on part of one stage.

Game Settings: IMoG Mode

Takes place in the Firey Lost City, lair of Mole Knight
Randomness has been removed from pickups and the enemies' behavior timers.
Player has access to all sub weapons and The Dynamo Mail armor
A timer immediately stops the game once 3 minutes are up. Pausing the game or dying does NOT pause the timer
Competitors will have one run (3 minutes) to obtain the highest score possible. At the end of the competition the player with the highest overall score will be declared the winner.

To enable IMoG Mode enter "IM&SGC14" (no quotes) as your name. Select "yes" then enter any name. A New save file will be created for this special mode.

Maybe this isn't the right topic, but I'm having issues using the Humble Store right now. It seems they want me to verify who I am after I login and try to access my download code by sending me an email with a verification key... but I'm never getting any email despite trying on a few devices and checking my spam box. Anyone else getting this issue? I need some Shovel-filled goodness :(

It asked me for verification when I tried to redeem the 3DS key. I got the email immediately though, so it wasn't a problem. Check your spam folder maybe?

Is the Humble Bundle Steam key meant to say 'Beta'? Thought it was the official release. Searched and didn't find anything.

Edit: must just be some old naming. Obviously works fine.

Hm. I wonder where. I went through the stage again and I found a chest I missed but it wasn't a blue chest.

AH yes, replaying the stage I have rediscovered where the relic is.
After the part with the pot platforms and the spike ceilings there is a platform which you have to use those ghost bunnies to reach and has dust blocks on it. Hit the bottom of the wall to enter the secret room where I believe the fortune coin lies.

I like the game a lot! Had a bit of trouble with input lag yesterday, but after turning off V-Sync it disappeared and I'm having much more fun now when the controls are spot on.

Edit: It's still unresponsive at times. I guess some keyboard combinations don't work well on my laptop.

Edit 2: Changed keys and now it seems to be working with V-Sync on.

I was able to buy that relic from the dude back in town. I wonder, if you miss a relic, does he just start carrying it in his shop in town?

Roughly how long is the game with one straight playthrough? No collecting secrets or nothin', just progressing through to the end?

IGN gives it a 9 yet has no cons for it? odd right? I'm fine with the score but it seemed like it was going to be higher especially with no cons noted - although in the review they said enemy variety could of been better. Maybe thats why?

This game is a perfect rendition and tribute to 8bit classics, much more than Duck Tales Remastered, Castle Of Illusion and probably the future Mighty No. 9, as it have its own identity and own mechanics instead of just merely trying to copy the originals. Plus it helps that Shovel Knight takes inspiration from the best 8bit games with the most elegant game design at their time (Mario 3 map, Megaman bosses, Duck Tales pogo stick, Castlevania secondary weapons, Metroid secrets and so on) and adding more modern game design elements (Checkpoints, Demons Souls risk/reward system, etc...).

I found this review very well done (Spoilers) :

Could have been a different relic, it is a bit fuzzy now, but I could see that being possible.

Just about the best level in the game. I think because it was designed for the phase ability... And phase kind of breaks everything else that isn't.

Yeah, that's really my only complaint about the game is phase kinda breaks the difficulty. Probably needs to be more expensive magic-wise and maybe you can't damage bosses while you use it. I know I can just not use it but it's hard when you have gold on the line in a battle.

Only thing I don't like so far is that you keep doing a downward thrust after releasing down. It has caused me to die more times than one.

Yes I think Phase should definitely turn character clipping off entirely, so you can't damage enemies and they can't damage you. It would still be useful for platforming if you want to avoid the enemy obstacles as well, but as it is, it's a really easy way to cheese any fight.

Ok, so I backed this when it was first announced and I understand that the game has been delayed for Europe but what do I do with the American 3DS eshop code I have been sent? This won't be the same code for the EU shop I'm sure.

I might have missed something when I was originally backing but I don't remember any specific information on the 3ds or wii u versions only being available for NA rather just a notification that the game will be available for Europe.

Give the code to me!
Please?
On a more serious note you should probably contact them and find out what you can do.

By the way, is there any reason Yacht Club haven't implemented nVidia 3D Vision on PC? It just feels a bit silly that the 3DS version has 3D but the superior option does not. Would love to see how this game actually looks in 3D considering 2D games ironically enough tend to look the best (thinking i Trine 2, Rayman Origins etc).

Is the game running in OpenGL or DirectX? Only the latter allows for 3D Vision afaik, so that could explain it. Still, would love to see it included.

Probably what I like least about this game.
In the intro, they make Shield Knight seem like a pretty rad lady, and then Shovel Knight's dreams turn her into a damsel to be saved.

I could say something about this but that would be spoiling things.

Is it possible to redeem a 3DS code in Europe? I got in on the kickstarter and received a mail with a code, but since it hasn't been released yet in Europe, registering it probably won't work, right?

Haha! Just contacted them, will see what happens.

I have the same issue and I doubt we'll be able to use our codes come EU release. Just contacted them though so hopefully get some information soon.
