Arabs may not have blackface in their histories (as far as I know), but it's not exactly free from explicit racism or links to slavery. I mean, my mom's friend's family was originally owned as slaves by a sheikh (from a now-GCC country), ancestrally, and they are still expected to carry out whatever tasks that sheikh's family gives them and pretty much be at their beck and call as "friends of the family".I remember this.. Later on the guy said it wasn't racist for him to do blackface because he's an Arab.
Is blackface exclusively an American thing?
Hey, now, I am American and wrote this before. you. Try not to write posts that apply a way of doing anything to all Americans, dude.US citizens trying to apply and push their cultural context to another countries is always amusing. Dat imperialist way of thinking.
A cultural taboo in the US is not usually a cultural taboo in Vienna. Logic
Isn't keeping up with the kardishans some completely scripted bullshit? Wouldn't even be surprised if it was just some behind the camera guy they told to do that, to add some drama to a boring episode.
It's tradition in Holland. Kids don't associate zwarte pieten with a race.
Hell, I was even dressed as a zwarte piet a few times when I was younger. Didn't see any harm myself. Thought it was fun.

I never said or implied that such behavior applies to all Americans.
im going to dieI don't mind when people are painted completely black for artistic reasons, such as in the sony psp ad
I feel like I understand what he was saying but the PSP ad is such a bad example since the quote for it and the image combined come off super racist.im going to die
How do you know?Racism is rampant in the Netherlands and Europe even more so than in America. It's the one thing that I do not envy about those countries. I don't give a fuck if it's built into the culture or part of some sort of historical tradition that's a bullshit cop-out.
the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
Observation.How do you know?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_and_White_Minstrel_ShowBlackface is a US thing. It doesn't exist in Europe. Our history with black people is different.
Yea the quote should of been omitted, didn't see the ad in years, forgot it said that.I feel like I understand what he was saying but the PSP ad is such a bad example since the quote for it and the image combined come off super racist.
Can someone explain to me how painting yourself to look black is racist. Serious question. I understand in the past performers did this and were clearly being racist- http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_-VADx5vjVKc/TJDtp00eIYI/AAAAAAAAAAU/fO0U3NAsgmU/s1600/6a00d834515db069e20120a86f6e21970b-800wi.gif[/img]. In this instance I'm not so sure. Was his intent to cause offence or to insult black people?
I'm not saying what he did was ok, but was it actually racist.
Europe is not a country. That's a bit of stereotyping there buddy, which incidentally could be described as being linked to racism.Racism is rampant in the Netherlands and Europe even more so than in America.
White man guilt from having black slaves. Thank god we weren't as much in slaves as them.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_and_White_Minstrel_Show
This existed in the UK until the late 70s, Minstrel troupes toured Europe as well.
As a white middle class male I don't see the problem.
That's what I thought.US citizens trying to apply and push their cultural context to another countries is always amusing. Dat imperialist way of thinking.
You're reachingEurope is not a country. That's a bit of stereotyping there buddy, which incidentally could be described as being linked to racism.
Observation.
You paint yourself black to play a role, not to mock a race. It's fucking stage makeup, there's no inherent racist context. What else are you supposed to do if you have a black character but no black actor to play the part?I don't understand, even if your not american why wouldn't you find it offensive.
If you paint yourself black to mock the race, then yeah it's offensive.
I don't mind when people are painted completely black for artistic reasons, such as in the sony psp ad or like yolandi in the die antwoord music videos, but in situations like this, yea it's offensive.
Perfect.
Can someone explain to me how painting yourself to look black is racist. Serious question. I understand in the past performers did this and were clearly being racist-. In this instance I'm not so sure. Was his intent to cause offence or to insult black people?![]()

No I'm not. You're stereotyping.You're reaching
Too bad it's true, you guys subjected black people to being slaves. Now you have guilt and rightly so. Same reasons Germans won't laugh about Nazi jokes.is this real life
niece, the guy in blackface approached her, an American who is married to a black man.
Yuropeans always doing the most with black people. Dat colonial way of thinking.
Dat imperialist way of of thinking. Dah
You paint yourself black to play a role, not to mock a race. It's fucking stage makeup - there's no inherent racist context. What else are you supposed to do if you have a black character but no black actor to play the part?
By THIS instance, I was referring to the guy at the opera, not the picture.yes it was racist. what is hard to understand about it being racist? it's an image mocking a another group of people's physical features by exaggerating the feature into a cartoonist image. when it was done in film/tv, the actors added portrayed these characters like they were complete invalids and buffoons. even contextually independent of America's past that image would still be racist, it's the intent. this idea that only conext makes something racist is ridiculous, its the intent.
Other way around, white girl grabbing black girl by her jaw.Yea the quote should of been omitted, didn't see the ad in years, forgot it said that.
There's also a picture of the girl in black grabbing the girl in white I believe.
So, you mean what most people shouldn't be doing?Too bad it's true, you guys subjected black people to being slaves. Now you have guilt and rightly so. Same reasons Germans won't laugh about Nazi jokes.
Tell us.Why do you think this would be?

Exactly. Still I think you thinking about something different. Hint: No cotton farms in the Netherlands.Other way around, white girl grabbing black girl by her jaw.
But yeah it was a very poorly chosen ad.

Because outside of France, we hardly have any black people in Europe. Mainly because we didn't import any as slaves. Why do you think this would be?
