Ok, seriously, this game is great. I've been playing through new game+ and I love seeing how much better at the game I got. Completely destroyed King Knight. Spectre Knight, who gave me a lot of trouble the first time around, was still challenging, but I handled him quite confidently. Not looking forward to Plague Knight, though. I couldn't really get a read on his patterns, even having fought him twice in my first game.

All said, though. I'm very pleased with the bosses. They don't seem to follow exactly the same patterns every time. And they can all be handled with just the shovel, though it's tough. It all seems pretty organic. Like a genuine battle. Pretty rare with most bosses in other games, honestly.

And I am soooooo so excited to play as them in battle mode, and the 3 in campaigns. This page really gets me pumped for the new content. Spectre Knight and Plague Knight sound especially unique and different from Shovel Knight. I really hope the other bosses get their own campaign later on. Even if it's paid DLC. I'll buy it.

Also...
I'm sure plenty of people have already said this, but the dream sequences are brilliant. The perfect combination of story and gameplay. They give Shovel Knight more character, without being overly sappy. The fact that he is trying so desperately to catch her implies that he's not just sad about her death, but that he somehow blames himself for it. Like, "If only I hadn't failed, she'd still be alive." Something like that. Thought I never did see what happens if you fail to catch her. It's great for pacing as well. After coming off a tough level and intense boss fight it's really nice to see Shovel Knight sleeping by the fire. It's a peaceful scene, but every once in a while we see that Shovel Knight is never really at peace. And it's all done through gameplay, giving the player more involvement, and giving the sequences more meaning than they would have had otherwise. Something that hundreds of modern and classic games have so much trouble with. It also "teaches" us how to handle the last segment of the game when we actually do have to catch Shield Knight. It's a very simple thing, but it checks so many boxes regarding character, story, pacing, and gameplay that I feel it really deserves whatever praise people are giving it.

Looking at other games in comparison, the way Shield Knight teams up for the final boss is brilliant and really emphasizes how much synergy the two have.

Man, looking at that page, I really wish Treasure Knight had been voted. The idea of focusing on money as a resource and having to start over the moment you hit 0 would make the game much more interesting.

Plague Knight looks really fun with bomb jumping.

That is cool. It is a shame that King Knight was chosen. He seems the weakest. But again, hopefully the rest get their own campaign eventually....

That was also a great way to meld story, character, and gameplay. And it was honestly effortless. I knew exactly what to do right away, and it's true that you could
feel the synergy.

This game is awesome, I really want to get it! Played it at a friends last night and we beat 5-6 levels and some overworld map bosses. The bosses are great so far and I am liking the level design a lot as well. I also like the combat system, remind me a lot of Legend of Zelda 2.

I love the fact that
they bounce off each other really well
. Truely love the way this game makes you do, not tell (not even show).

lol I didn't expect them to reply to my tweet and video, but they actually did:

Really enjoying the game so far especially that Specter Knight fight where I had just one hit left on my life and destroyed all checkpoints earlier to that. I just wish I had more time to sit down and play it some more.

I want to wait for a sale since I'm broke and would like to get it on both 3DS and Wii U, but I don't know how long I can hold out for. Too bad Nintendo doesn't do cross platform digital purchases. :(

The Digger's Diary thing is going to be awesome in another couple days. Lots of great messages in the village already.

It already is great! Love some of the tips some spoiler messages say, or just commentary in general. Best of all, it doesn't distract/deter from he actual game since its on the bottom screen (it actually cycles through the messages automatically too).

Just get the WiiU version. It will have incoming couch multi plus that big screen and Digger's Diary. 3DS has a neat Streetpass feature but lately been wanting to have more dedicated sitdowns with my games.

I love the fact that the miiverse implementation is consistent with the art style and you get to choose avatars from the different characters.

Since the entire game goes by single screens at a time, I assume the posts you see are simply based on the individual screen that you're on. If so, that's very smart. (It's also funny how you can "role play" as bosses and post messages one your own stage. Like, "You'll never beat me Shovel Knight!" or
"Dang! I thought that giant fish would have gotten you!"
)

This game seriously brings out the kid in me.... : )

I've made it up to the tower now, and I think my personal favorite is Polar Knight, both for boss fights and levels. Music might be Treasure Knight, though.

I don't know if it's because the first stage is the only stage that I can play through with extreme leisure, but I felt like no other level theme was as enjoyable to listen to other than the first one.

Yup! You can see on another page what the campaigns will be like/ what moves the bosses will have. Looks like King Knight will be comedy focused, while Specter and Plague Knight both have stories that explain their origins.

It was to select the three to get their own campaigns.

what page for the additional boss campaign detail

I found it - although which three were picked?

I so, so wish The Enchantress was one of the playable bosses. Damn you King Knight and your kingly strut. Damn you. You took her spot didn't you?

I'm really trying to savor the game but I'm a little over half done I'll probably knock it out. I can't get over it though it seriously brings me back to the NES days as a kid time disappears while playing.

Really need some tips..especially what to spend money on. Also what are meal tickets?

Give it to the Gastronomer (the red guy on the left in the second screen of the first town), it will boost your health by 1.

As for money, you will get tons of it as you play and will have more than enough in the end. Just buy what you think you'll like.

Beat it just now. Loved the way they merged the story and mechanics in the final battle. Great game and extremely charming. Found myself surprisingly engaged in the outcome of such a simple and predictable story. The boss fights themselves are way more creative than I expected, their behaviors are pretty advanced and most of them seem to have some kind of unique mechanic.

My complaints are pretty minor, firstly the game could be better at communicating when something is dangerous. This is especially annoying when bouncing on enemies with the shoveldrop, some of the larger enemies seem to be able to hurt Shovelknight after bouncing of them. Since the game otherwise encourages repeated bouncing on dangerous objects the moments when you suddenly get hurt by doing so become kind of awkward since there is no clear indication that you will get hurt.

The game also seem to give the player more health and health items than the game knows what to do with. After the first couple of health upgrades health rarely became an issue and most of my deaths came from falling or instakill hazards. It kind of makes you care less about obstacles as the game progresses, creating a more sloppy playstyle since health and especially health items are so common. I ended up avoiding the use of both the health ichor and phase locket as a result. The difficulty seems to peak around around three knights in the middle.

Will be fun to see where this ends up in the GOTY lists, it will probably end up near the top on my own.

I beat it. Took 9 hours (wtf?!) and 100 deaths (3 of those were me suiciding in the Topple King pond!) with 79% item completion. I'm soooo bad at this lol. The final battle was ~amazing~. Great game, glad I backed it, really happy with the result. :D

I guess next is.... New Game Plus?

Guys I REALLY suck at this game! I can't beat that spectre/phantom dude that is that creepy zone that is south of first village.

Damn I wish they met the final stretch goal. Maybe they'll consider it if the game sells well enough.
I know this has been addressed already, but... Seriously people, there's a big pile of treasure at the bottom and the bottom stretch goal is flashing all the colors of the rainbow rather than being greyed out or anything. And while I can't expect everyone to know that the animation for still reaching stretch goals was Shovel Knight digging, you could quickly search for the Kickstarter and see Shovel Knight had reached $311k in funding.

I kind of don't like how you don't even have to find the relics to be able to purchase them.

I didn't feel like doing New Game+ so I'm going for a no spending money run instead. We'll see how much I can endure this, although now I have an excuse to just blaze through the levels and semi-speedrun it since money doesn't matter.

So, should I get this game on WiiU or 3DS?

Personally I can't recommend the 3dS version enough. The 3D effect is handled masterfully (doesn't distract from gameplay, just quietly enhances the presentation) the soundtrack sounds great through a pair of headphones and the street pass feature is another reason to carry your 3DS with you.

Is the Steam achievement for Hurry Up busted for everyone or just me? Spent all morning trying to get it and it didn't pop after I got the in-game feat :(

pogo jumping is the best boss killer. get better at it
don't look at the scythe look at were he teleports to and the scythe trajectory becomes obvious
he is weakest when he throws his scythe but doesn't teleports. pogo jump as much as you can during that time

also pogo jumping has a weird hit/hurtbox. learn to abuse it

Okay, thanks. I'll try it again now.

I saw this earlier, it had inspired a lot of my shovel only fight playstyles.
I kind of don't like how you don't even have to find the relics to be able to purchase them.
Aren't they more expensive in the village though?

The original idea for the game is that you wouldn't be able to replay old levels at all, and thus needed an outlet for players to get the relics they missed. They must have changed their mind somewhere in development though, probably to accommodate music sheet collecting.

You should add Nintendo Life's My Nintendo News's Review and Always Nintendo's reviews to the reviews section for the Wii U/3DS versions of the game!

I know their Kickstarter says they can't guarantee battle mode for 3DS but I hope they consider using local download play as an option. Would open the game to players who haven't "dug in" already and would make it easy to take the battle with you.
