Senran Kagura: Siliconera interview @ E3 (SK Burst sold very well, fan service)

In regards to Akiba's Trip, it turned it from a game I had almost no interest in, to one I've currently got pre-ordered.

I'm totally for more male oriented fanservice, if that's not already totally obvious.

And it's only fair. I'd never understand why fanservice should be limited to only one gender.

I still have to buy the game on 3DS, but first I need a bigger SD card. That's really the main reason I haven't actually bought it.

I'm happy to hear there will be a male with the same treatment in the second one... though just one is a bummer. Baby steps are better than none, though.

SD cards are mega cheap on Amazon

There are rumors of a second male character. It would make sense too, since you play the game in groups of 2.

Ok, can someone please explain the difference (at least where the titles fit in in terms of storyline
(yes i'm playing for story)
) between Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus and Senran Kagura 2:Shinku

So Shinovi Versus is a spinoff? And Shinku is a mainline title?

Both are 3D now? whereas the Senran Kagura Burst was sidescrolling?

I'm wondering whether to pick up a 3DSXL so I can play Burst and Shinku? Or if I should just play Shinovi Versus first. I already have a Vita.

Shinovi Versus is canon and takes place after the events of Burst, a direct sequel to Burst however would be Senran Kagura 2.

Edit: I just found out that Asuka (main character) is 16 in SK2 while she is actually 17 in Shinovi Versus.
Which leads me to belive that, chronologically at least, SK2 takes place before Shinovi Versus.

Senran Kagura Burst(2D beat em up sidescroller) is the first game in the series so for story you start hear, Shinovi Versus(3D beat em up) isn't a spinoff but a sequel to Burst(picks up where Burst left off), Bon Appetite(rhythm cooking game) is a spinoff and Senran Kagura 2(2D beat em up, 3D boss fights with no american release date) is a sequel to Senran Kagura Burst

Sounds like lot of fun. Especially in a store packed full of these people
;p

Does someone from polygon work there?

I keep in the R18+ or Japanese version of the R rating in mind. In Senran Kagura: Bon Appétit there are scenes where you see the girls get covered in food. Originally, they didn’t have chocolate sauce drizzled on them. I added chocolate sauce because I thought the girls showed too much skin and it turned out adding that in was even more erotic.

Takaki Da GAWD!!!

I'm waiting for the Arrow video game that has the Salmon Ladder minigame so I can go in a thread and ask where you are and if you're alright.

So yeah, I'll need more of you to buy SK games. I wonder what happened to Plump Valkyrie?

Now the next step is to make an all-male fanservice game, that's not a part of the otome/dojin genre. I wonder who will be the first publisher to give that a shot.

I'd say the problem there is that the "otaku audience" which are REALLY active buyers and the reason why you can see certain weird stuff in Japanese media is mainly composed by men. So that makes it a little harder from an economical point.

But hey, I'd applaud the publisher that gave it try. Variety is always a good thing. Do you have a problem with otome games due to the MC gender? Does it break the inmersion a little or something like that?

My god this fake account is amazing. Because it's fake, right? xD

Seeing this tablet I think I'd need to be careful. Seeing at this trend I may be a dangerous criminal and I haven't noticed it yet.

I know a pure beefcake game wouldn't have the same audience as the cheesecake stuff, but there is an audience out there. It's just that we're usually relegated to underground stuff. You can't build a market without actually making something to appeal to them first. Plus, I think games that are made for people that enjoy the male form will actually do well in the west too. Products geared toward LGBT gamers are a pretty huge untapped market. There are a lot of us out there, just waiting to spend our money.

As for otome games, I don't have any problem with them at all. I happen to enjoy them. (Sweet Fuse was one of my favorite games of 2013.) But they tend to appeal to a very specific type of market, and usually follow a very similar aesthetic. Lithe pretty boys are not really my thing, but I can appreciate it for what it is, and I think the expansion of the genre in the west can only be a good thing. There is room for all kinds of varied content, and I just want publishers to realize this.

Shinovi Versus is a spin-off and a direct sequel of Burst (Hebijo storyline, more precisely), but it should be considered a separate continuity which will be exclusive to Sony consoles. Estival Versus will probably takes place after the events of SV.

I play for the story too, or more precisely for the character as the story is above-all characters-driven; althought the first game (Hanzo side in Burst) was well structured in its balance between lighter and darker story segments, and how almost all the novel segments served a common purpose.
Shinovi Versus was more messy, I guess four schools/points of view was harder to write.
Still loved Homura's storyline.

From the official site, we know there is still room for at least one more character reveal.

XD

I'm not sure if you follow original English-language visual novels, but there are two that I've got my eyes called "Coming Out On Top" and "Super Health Club."
Also, a BL visual novel called "No, Thank You!" has been confirmed by the developers as getting an English release (according to people who can read Japanese, anyway), and should be announced at Anime Expo.
The great thing about these games is that the men are more on the beefy side, although SHC kind of suffers a bit from t-rex arm syndrome, IMO.

And they are R18 games, even better! :p

I've already got Coming Out On Top and Super Health Club pre-ordered. :)

Super Health Club's art is done by Dong Saeng, who is one of my favorite artists, so I'm very excited for that one. And I've played the demo of COOT and talked to the developer, and it's shaping up to be really great as well. I've never heard of No, Thank You!, but I'll look into it.

I love seeing all these indie developers getting into the game, but I'm wondering who the first big dev to throw their hat in will be.

Seriously though, I'll stick with this franchise for the long haul. Bon Appetit doesn't really look like my type of game, but if it helps get more over here, I'm down to do my part.

Cool thanks for the explanations.

I love side scrolling beat them ups, so will definitely have to think about getting a 3DS XL then. I assume Burst is still up on the Nintendo US store? Does the Nintendo online store ever have sales?

Also speaking of Akiba's Trip are we getting an OT for that game? Its out in a month isn't it? Wish we were getting the PS4 version as well, but happy to play it on the Vita for now.

Oh great, I'm going to need to find what panel this will be so I can cheer when it happens.

Just wanna reiterate that the chocolate quote is still incredible and probably quote of the year 2014.

Impressive followup to his quote of the year 2012.

Burst is still eshop download only. It was still $30 last I checked and I don't think there has been a sale for that particular game yet.

There are sales for games on the eshop, Atlus was having a sale for SMT4 and Etrian Odyssey for example.

Kinda hijacking this thread, but MangaGamer tweeted this:

Well then.
(Psst, MangaGamer, not just ladies.)

They also posted this in a blog a little while back...

I’ve only just started working with MangaGamer, but with my next assignment underway I’m pretty excited about the future here. It hasn’t been announced yet, so, I can’t really say too much, but I’m really fond of it (I still kind of can’t believe I actually get to work on it). It’s pretty different from anything MangaGamer’s released before and I’m sure a lot of you will take one look at it and go ‘no thanks,’ but I hope you guys give it a chance!

Soooooooooo, pretty much 100% gonna be them.

I'm not gonna post a link because their site it NSFL, but trust me, it's there.

Share them with your pal right here.
These aren't the things that I want. I was scared.

If you go to their site, you'll know immediately what I mean. (But as I said, EXTREMELY NSFW.)

"No, Thank You!!!" will be a pretty big departure from what seems to be their usual fare.

It's official, MangaGamer is bringing over No, Thank You!!! :)

I don't know if GAF is ready for an announcement topic, but I thought I'd post it here for the people that expressed interest.

But how much could you post in said thread? The game is definitely 18+.

I'd love to discuss the game with other Gaffers, but I don't want to cause any problems either.

You could post the opening of the game, that isn't NSFW, but then again I don't know the GAF rules for discussing 18+ porn games.

Why not make a new thread for No, Thank You!!!? I'm sure it will be fun, haha.

I added chocolate sauce because I thought the girls showed too much skin and it turned out adding that in was even more erotic.

I didn't know I wanted this, now I know I do.

I don't really know either, that's the problem. GAF is the main place I go to discuss games, and I know there are others here that would also be interested, but I don't want to incite any
disapproval from the mods.

And the types of forums that you can discuss these games openly at are not the kind of places I usually frequent, for other reasons. :/

I know most people here would be able to talk about it respectfully, but all it takes is one person going off the rails, and the whole thing will get shuttered.

Fun until someone gets in trouble, or a huge argument breaks out.

You could try PMing a mod. Since these kinds of games are allowed (I know they don't have actual nudity, but if the trailers are any indication, they come pretty close), I don't see why a No, Thank You thread wouldn't be allowed.

I'm all for equality in fan service, honestly it's quite frustrating that it's always women in these games. Which SK games have the guy (Murasame?) in them? I might get them just to support fan service equality.

Hmm, I think I'm gonna hold off for now. Perhaps in the future when it's a bit more clear what is, and is not, appropriate, it might be easier to have topics dedicated to these games. For right now, I guess it'll be best to keep the discussion in the VN community thread.

As for the SK game with Murasame, it's Senran Kagura 2: Shinku (or Deep Crimson) for the 3DS. It has not been confirmed for an English release yet.

"The 3DS digital-only version sold great so we decided to release two physical Vita spin-offs! Depending on how those Vita games sell, we'll consider localizing the direct sequel to the 3DS game that already sold well..."

I'm not sure I understand the logic.

Reminds me of 3rd party support on the Wii with games made to "test" a market.

>Spin-off/niche game comes out on Wii and is a success
>Sequel is made on another platform or spin-off sequel is greenlit while mainline game comes to every platform but the Wii

My thought is the Vita seems to have a reputation for games like this in Japan or something and they think it has more of that in the West than the 3DS does, despite sales. Again, that's like the assumption that core gamers would automatically buy a game more on other platforms than Nintendo platforms, even if it's a proven success on Nintendo platforms, even if it later tanks on other platforms.

I remember when Marvelous announced they had an action based 2d game coming to the 3DS and I was like, WHAT!? Is this a Vanillaware game?! (They published Muramasa).... and then it turned out to be this shit.

I thought the same thing. A stereoscopic Muramasa would be incredible with the layered parallax scrolling backgrounds and it's a travesty that a Vita port exists while a 3DS one does not.

Interesting, we haven't had an official English bl game in ages so I'm happy. I'll definitely buy it (and Ozmafia!!) even though experience tells me I probably won't finish it.

It'll be a tragedy if Vanillaware doesn't make a 3DS game at some point. I don't have high hopes for it, but man...
