Maybe getting a huge fighting game fan like Jason on staff is the final push that Jeff needs to finally go to Evo. How awesome would it be if they went down there and shot some video.

Doesn't Legend of Korra have a terrible reputation these days? Not sure if we can trust him as anime editor

No. Even the Korra thread here on GAF, which as been one of the show's harshest critics last season, has been falling completely in love with the show all over again with the third season so far.

I wouldn't read too much into the favouring of those tweets, people often use it to remember a tweet for later referencing (especially on mobile), not just as a complete endorsement. Yes, he's fully entrenched and engages in the issue, but he's also privy to the inner workings of Giant Bomb - where they're at and where they're going. I wouldn't be surprised if he's talking with Jeff to write something or address the issue formally.

Wouldn't say he's excluded from criticism, Simins fav'd a bunch of tweets from people saying he could talk the talk, but not walk the walk and similar shit. Like he had the final word here.

I wouldn't worry much about Patrick. He's gonna stick around I think.

Hope you guys are right. Would hate to lose Scoops. :(

That was the article though - with the transcribed words. Listening to the newly uploaded podcast, and hearing the guy actually talk passionately about the game is more interesting IMO. Sure, it is technically the same content, but hearing someone's emotion when they speak about something that matters to them is much more interesting than reading dry words on a page.

I liked it anyway - thought it was worth highlighting.

Reading this thread hurts my head. Basically unless the team consists of a gay person, a transgender, only one white male, a female of ethnicity, a white female and black male then they are racist. It doesn't seem to matter if those aren't viable candidates due to ability, that should seemingly be neglected to fulfil the notion of being equal. Is this what people wanted?

It seems impossible to please everyone.

Who said any of this?

Just wanted to weigh-in on the hiring controversy as it's been on my mind since last night and reading the last 10 pages of the thread.

Ultimately, I want Jeff to do what's best for the future of the site and all the pre-existing staff. If he, and the rest of the team, felt that Dan and Jason were the best options; then so be it.

But I'm also disappointed that great individuals such as Zoe Quinn and Cara Ellison weren't the ones to get hired. Giantbomb introduced me to these outstanding people and I've really taken a liking to work and opinions expressed by both. Either one would have continued to bring their refreshing perspectives to the site.

Patrick puts out way too much content to not be considered important to the GB Crew. I just hope one day soon he'll be able to run his own GB Chicago branch with coworkers/employees.

Were they even interested in the positions that Giant Bomb had posted?

Seriously. I feel like the only written material I've read on Giant Bomb has been from Patrick. Not to mention the podcasts, streams, and interviews he puts out.

One is a full time dev apparently loving working on her FMV game, the other is a traveling embedded freelancer who'd need a work visa that's hard to come by.

Not saying either wouldn't be good hires, but, let's not pretend they'd be easy pieces to fit in the puzzle either.

Did they want the job?

Ditto

Would building a set be classed under the equipment budget?

If so, sofa, chairs, and lighting for GB NY would eat up a lot of money

I have no idea how they split it up. If I had to guess I would say lights are equipment but office furniture isn't and likely comes under a central budget for building maintenance. Could well be either CBS or TV Guide has a room full of old desks and chairs in the basement - I know our office does.

Either way high end cameras and tricasters are the big expense - they might have to go without those for this quarter - but the rest should be within their means.

Literally no one in this thread has called, or even implied, that Giant Bomb is racist because they hired two white guys. No one asking that the site encompass every available ethnicity and gender; many of us just think it would be nice if they weren't ALL white men of a certain age. And it's incredibly dismissive to imply there are no viable non-white candidates because they lack "ability."

To play devil's advocate, we're not talking about Giantbomb "not having a lot of people of (x) descent." We're talking about Giantbomb having exactly zero. Past or present. When you consider this coupled with the extremely homogenous E3 shows this year that's what's spurring the Giantbomb + diversity conversation.

Giantbomb also only employs eight people...
People kinda tend to forgett that this has been a pretty bad year for GB. They lost Ryan, Dave and Ian and Patrick and Vinny moved away, all within one year. Honestly they can't be that picky and choosy cause I doubt they can afford to just rehire somebody else in a year if things don't work out. If you are in Jeff's position and get get somebody with the experience of Dan Ryckert, know he is a fun guy and know you can work with him you'd honestly be an idiot for not chossing him.

That Simins person on Twitter has really annoyed me over this whole thing and I shouldn't let her since I think that's her aim. I don't get the impression she's a great Giant Bomb fan nor is she familiar with Jason or Dan's work so she's looking at this on purely the surface level (which is a bit ironic). It'd be more annoying if I thought Dan and Jason would take this personally, not too familiar with Jason but Dan seems like the type to find a 24 hour shitstorm pretty funny.

They'll probably try and get Cara if they can in the future but the site has become very understaffed so they needed guys who (1) are qualified in producing GB-esque content, (2) they know will fit in with the gang, and (3) won't require any extra paperwork to get on board. Cara, like Danny, would require that extra time/work. At the moment Jeff's concern should be - and is - hiring the right people for the job. Those three points are the ones Jeff should be going for right now.

Right, there-in lies the dilemma, pieces in a puzzle. Saying that Ryan's death devastated the team and community would an understatement. You can't replace him. But the site and team want to grow and move forward. So they have to add people who can help accomplish that goal. But suggesting they should have added people based on gender/race/sexuality just to check off a box feels wrong to me.

And I doubt Dan and Jason will have an easy time of becoming well integrated pieces in the GB puzzle. Patrick, whom I've been a fan of since 1UP, is still facing adversity from the community.

Man, I never really appreciated how poorly Deadly Premonition controlled during the ER till I played it for myself this week. At least their (console) version didn't crash every five minutes.

Ive just read the last 11 pages and everyone is upset of "more white guys".

I don't know what it's like on Twitter or whatever, so I'm not going to speak to that.

But I really feel like the discussion in this thread has been pretty civil, and people who bring up the topic aren't upset. They're just disappointed that the new hire speaks to a larger problem in the gaming industry. And I think that's a pretty valid discussion to have.

Giantbomb also only employs seven people...

And almost zero turnover. And a recently troubled history with staff including a death and two relocations.

People are putting a lot at the feet of Giant Bomb just because they have significant industry recognition. However that doesn't necessarily translate into corporate influence, budget and complete control of their future.

It's clear as day that they're trying to stabilise before even thinking about branching out. Hence the 'safe' hire. Dan is good to go now and probably won't face a fraction of the teething issues Patrick did. Being able to jump right into content production also buys GB East some time and keeps the numbers looking good for quarterly reviews and Jeff's future budget requests. Taking a chance on someone right now who is less known to GB could prove disastrous if it doesn't work out - it would be a very public firing followed by a content dip and another new face.

But again, I think that Sour Thumbs podcast was informative - they mentioned both Polygon and IGN recently had open positions that went to white men. So I think Giant Bomb is acting as the whipping boy for all the pent-up industry criticism. They're also more accessible, so are probably an easier target.

Jeff's said on Mixlr he wants to QL Sniper Elite. Maybe that'll be the first Jeff/Dan video?

Why do you assume either were interested in the position in the first place?

That'd be fun. Thanks for the post above. You've done an great job of being a voice of reason and rationalizing things on this thread and ultimately culled the amount of bad posts. There is a discussion to be had and I'm glad we can have it without people throwing their toys out the cot.

Stuff here bleeds over onto the GB forums more than most (on both sides) would maybe like but I appreciate it.

I'm just excited to see Daddy Ryckert fuck shit up.
