Black Prep School Class President Steps Down After Mocking White Classmates

The fact that she wrote confederate makes this a dead give away. There is no debate here. I think some are not realizing that there were words attached to the photo.

She's not even denying the racist element here, people.

Anyway, nothing would have happened if she wasn't class president. You can't do stuff like this when you're in a role like that.

Rich, preppy, conservative, lax bros are white. #Romney2016 #Confederacy aren't there to mock rich, preppy, conservative lax bros of all colors and creeds.

No matter how detestable that demographic she's mocking may be (and FFS, they are horrible), there's an undeniable racial element.

See, here's the difference

She's mocking the elite, predominantly white. It's a completely different situation from someone wearing blackface or mocking black people as being thugs or something of that nature.

Had a white student done the same thing with a basketball, jordans, whatever, it would be all over the national news and the person would have been relieved of their duties.

So, I have to agree with the decision to step down here. Your race doesn't exempt you from being able to be offended or angry at stuff like this.

What about those white college kids who dressed up in sombreros and the like a few months back and made national headlines for "racism"? How can anyone honestly say this is any different, especially when the intent is clearly the same?

i agree with this

I'm not American so I might be off here but typing out #confederate is implying that the white students are white supremacists right?

First, she's mocking the elite white, let's not sugarcoat it. Confederacy references aren't to ridicule the dickhead Filipino kid who drives a Tesla to school because he has two brain surgeons for parents. Difference of degree, not in kind. Second, why are we even diving into "well X is worse than Y, so Y is different and ok!"

For the record, growing up in central suburban New Jersey, I think what she did was awesome. But it's clearly racial in nature, and attempts to ignore that are silly.

BTW, not that it necessarily matters, but you don't know that she's rich too just by going to that school. There are entire programs dedicated to sending gifted and talented minority kids to schools like this. In the tri-state area alone, you have groups like:

http://www.prepforprep.org/
http://www.abetterchance.org/
http://www.prepforprep.org/podium/default.aspx?t=145408 (Prep 9 boarding school program)

The school in question itself is a member of this program:
http://www.lawrenceville.org/campus...p-9-immersion-in-residence-program/index.aspx

I was in one of these programs, and was placed in a school exactly like this. I dunno exactly what her school is like compared to mine, but I know first-hand what it's like to be under endless scrutiny and sometimes baseless trolling/hate as one of the few (or sometimes only) minority men/women in an overwhelmingly white school. I know what it's like to be in that environment, and have it compounded by also being of entirely different financial means. You hear and see a lot of things, and a lot of things are done or said to you/people like you that would be patently impossible if it was outside in an ethnic neighborhood...

I wish she didn't post that thing to her social media - once you're in a representative position somewhere, you gotta be smarter than to do stuff like that.

...but I understand.

Would definitely be implying that the preppy Lax guys are racists, yeah. Not a surprise that many of them would be (understandably) upset, along with the faculty. Dumb in any combination of directions, and even dumber considering her position.

So is the fact that she's a significant minority in the prep school. No one's going to get in trouble for that. All she did was be more blatant about her racial frustrations than the actual problematic people keep more subtle so they don't get in trouble for them.

I mean yeah ok but who cares really. Like most of these things it's racial but not racist.

So i'm sticking with no big deal, with the standard disclaimer that if it was a white guy blah blah blah....

She also notes that some of her initiatives as president — to institute a “diversity representative” on the student council board, and to create gender-neutral bathrooms, for example — were not well-received. She caught flak later in the year, she explains, for raising her fist in a “black power” salute along with several other students for a yearbook photo.

Well now arent we just full of good ideas.

this thread + redskins thread = wat

like a total different response to each. she's not even hiding that it's racial and people are backing her up. like she has a chip on her shoulder and being the president of a prep school somehow gives her the authority to make a difference by mocking people.

nm, i don't get it.

Mocking the rich white elite. Which I don't blame her for doing, considering that she couldn't even do a "black power" salute without being scrutinized. Can't be pro-black, can't be anti-rich white.

So a group of white kids wearing KKK hoods or doing the Nazi salute for a yearbook photo would be okay?

The black power movement was a movement of advancement for black people. The salute by itself can be symbolic for a desire to do that at her prep school.

Nazis and KKK fucking kill people that they view as subhuman.

Idiot.

All she did was be more blatant and cross a line, yes. As noted, the rich white lax bro she's mocking who goes on Instagram and does the same thing back at her, mocking the typical black student at the school with #JimCrow would get far worse punishment and far more media scrutiny (and 100% deservedly so on both accounts).

This isn't hard, and the attempts you're making to differentiate the two in order to completely absolve her of a silly racial joke are painful.

How would that picture be offensive to anyone, ever? She's just making fun of obnoxious preppy kids. Everyone likes making fun of obnoxious preppy kids.

Pressuring her to step down for something so innocuous is bizarre, and seems completely uncalled for. I want more details.
Pretending you're not one of those kids when you go to a $50k private school seems suspect and douchy in turn, especially if this person was popular enough to get elected as class president... certainly a stupendously stupid move, but I dunno if there's enough context to say any more than that.

Why is a black person mocking white people different than a white person mocking black people? I don't get it.

It's obviously different. Black people are and have been the victims of actual systematic racism for centuries, they are literally being held down by the structures in place. Racial profiling from her towards white people is obviously less problematic because she doesn't have the power of an oldboy network behind her to enforce her prejudice in any significant way that would harm white people beyond being annoyed/offended here and there.

That being said though, SMH at some of you coming in here and making this the racism Olympics, the fuck is wrong with you people? Racial prejudice should be discouraged and met with resistance in every form even if it does come from a black lesbian. Just because X thing is more problematic than Y doesn't make Y not problematic. Fuck outta here with the 'im not mad' 'why is this a problem' bullshit and fuck outta here with trying to make this a competition.

Duck shoes. Hockey stick is close, but the duck shoes are 100% white.

Wouldn't this be more akin to a plump person holding a size 00 shirt, surrounded by a ton of guy or girl admirers, and tagging it "#skinnybitches" ?

I think if she posted a selfie with her pretending to lynch someone, or whipping someone, and tagging it #confederate, would be akin to someone posting a selfie of them pretending to vomit into the bathroom and tagging it #skinnybitches.
You shouldn't do any of those things as a class president.

While this isnt necessarily the same as a white person doing soing something similar, the idea of it is making fun of a group of people which is not good for a representative of a school like that. Im not going to be up in arms about it, but what she did was born from some type of hate based on race. That is a pretty shitty thing to do.

Why is a black person mocking white people different than a white person mocking black people? I don't get it.

Well, RatchetWhiteGirls, there's that whole thing of how whites used to treat blacks in America. There used to be a time when the jokes weren't just jokes, and white people mocking black people is an all-too familiar reference to that horrible history (not to mention that discrimination exists to this very day)

EDIT: Still, I thought this girl's behavior was inappropriate....mostly because she was president.

None of those things are really aimed at her classmates though. Inferring that all your white male classmates are all closet racists is going to cause a pretty big reaction in a way a more general social statement isn't.

Hmmmm....see I don't feel they have the same impact. Let's look at the stereotypes here for a second and their impact.

What she did: Preppy clothing, preppy pose, Ivy League school sweater that she insinuates these people have connections too, etc. What does she portray? Basically her stereotype is of a rich white kid who is well provided for.

Your hypothetical Ghetto example: White kid dressing down with baggy clothes, basketball Jersey and Jordans on. What does this portray? Basically the stereotype that minorities are all ghetto which is also the stereotype for minority criminals.

Do you see the difference? One mocks privilege and possibly associates one race to privilege while the other mocks poverty/crime and possibly associates one race to crime.

Different impact.

I don't get how this is about race, or is that just the invention of the writer? Maybe I'm just not rich enough to understand?

So you're saying as an Asian American I can no longer wear my duck shoes? Fuck man I'm already at work. People are probably judging me right now.

I guess you guys missed the part where she specifically called out rich white males, or just dont care enough to read the OP, or just dont care about the issue here.

She mentioned rich white males in her buzzfeed interview long after the incident took place. She didn't say anything about white males when she posted the photo.

Who do you think she was mocking at a $53K annual tuition private prep school outside Princeton, NJ when she dressed up as a typical Lawrenceville boy, poor Colombians?
