The US has done pretty well compared to other nations who focus on football solely though. I think if the US can get football to 2nd or third most popular sport in the US and really develop a culture around it. That the return in the World Cup could be a lot greater.

Most other countries actually do play other sports.

I think you are missing the point. The point is that the talent pool for football in the US is watered down because the US has so much other sports that talented youngsters who might dominate in football are instead pushed towards baseball, basketball, american football. Maybe that guy who is riding the bench of a baseball team is the next ronaldo but we will never find out because the US doesn't focus on football currently like that.
This is what I was trying to get at. The main problem being is theres no money in the sport in the states compared to everything else.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but football is one of the most popular sports in Russia and the second most popular in China and yet look at them in the World Cup.

Basketball is crazy popular in China and they're god awful at it. I think they just suck at team sports.

I don't get the US played bad defense posts. I think they played pretty damn good defense for the tournament. The problem was they played way too much of it.

You conceded so many chances, just like you did against Ghana but the opposition failed to convert them.

That isn't good defence, it's luck plus great goalkeeping.

So I left to gym after Belgium scored the 2nd cause I thought it was over pretty much..........I come fuken back, hear what happened, and see the highlights, and see the Dempsey miss..........

He means they chased the ball a lot. He's not wrong.

They're really fit, which is something Klinsi made a point to do. But they were crowded out by Ghana and Belgium like nobody's business, losing out on a lot of 50/50 balls

I'm sure if Kloppo had been the Germany manager they'd be in tremendous shape too.

I was about to say.

I'm pretty sure football/soccer isn't even sport number one in Belgium.

I don't think beer brewing and deep frying are considered sports (yet). Just kidding, football is #1 in Belgium and pretty much all of Europe. (except maybe the baltic countries)

USA is out ?!

Good, lets go back discussing football in this thread rather than freedom, bald eagles and lesser sports.

And having one or fast and strong people doesn't guarantee success like you seem to think if they have nothing else to offer.

There seems to be a prevailing thought that if someone can run fast and is strong skill doesn't matter and is easily learned. When skill is the hardest part of the game otherwise we'd just sign sprinters.

Skill>>>>>>>>>>>>> atheltics in football.

You could be absolutely masterful with the ball, but if you don't have the athletic ability to play with other athletes you won't make it to the top. It has to be a combination of skill and athleticism with other tangibles to make it to the top in just about any sport. Raw physical ability can compensate for lack of skills, but only to a certain degree. The same in the sense that skills can only carry you so far if your physical ability hinders you. It's why you don't have fatass skillful soccer players at the top, it's still a sport and you have to be able to run, jump, and move on the same level as the competition.

I bet Allen Iverson would have been good at soccer. There's no real point at doing what ifs though.

I think we will see a super star African player soon. Population:
1980:
Africa 478million
Europe: 695 million
2013:
Africa 1111million
Europe 742 million

Kind of off topic, but I'm watching the movie The Mummy on AMC and one of the American dudes on here looks like Landon Donovan. Had me trip out for the a min

It isn't #1 in Ireland. ;)

I don't know if that's because we're shit at it, or we're shit at it because it isn't #1. I'd say it's #3 anyway.

We already have plenty of African super star players. It's just their teams that disappoint on a regular basis.

The other thing to consider for US fans, have some patience... you might be waiting a long time for consistent success. There's a monopoly on success at international level. A lot good teams waited a long time for all the pieces to come together.

Look at the last teams standing. Only one surprise left Costa Rica. End of the day it's gonna be the same old faces knocking on the door and lifting the trophy.

Brazil vs Colombia
Germany vs France
Belgium vs Argentina
Costa Rica vs Netherlands

Juan Roman Riquelme was, by all accounts, a tremendously average athlete, but a brilliant player.

Most Americans understand this. We were mostly excited to see the team have some success, and American's dial up the patriotism when we either get a taste of success or get to root for an underdog. This team fit the bill.

Being at a bar and watching the game was an experience for sure. So many clueless assholes drunkenly shouting.

The best part was when the game was over and some guy was like now all I have to watch is Baseball. I guess no MLS for him.

Explain baseball then. Apparently that's a sport too.

Well, I'm not hugely disappointed as I didn't think we'd make it out of group stage to begin with, but I am a little sad.

But, I am a Seattle fan and I was absolutely ecstatic watching Yedlin play amazing for 90 minutes. :D Saw on twitter some players in Europe mentioning him. We won't be able to hold him for long.....but that's best for his career. Created a lot of chances compared to our midfield players.

To be fair, he might have been talking about all competitions.

Yeah, I realized that after I posted.

AZ did go on to win the KNVB Cup. And he scored against Ajax and PSV, which are the biggest teams in the competition! I'm not saying Altidore is rubbish or anything, but Eredivisie performance can be very misleading.

I'm a FC Twente fan and our main striker, Luc Castaignos, scored 14 goals last year. He is total shit.
