Hail to the KING baby
The best United States athletes don't play soccer. I have a feeling until it starts becoming a trend the US are always going to be underdogs.

Yeah but honestly it's pretty fun being in that position. The only thing that ever bothered me was that we had so few genuinely exciting/stylish players (Dempsey was about it for the longest). But with guys like Yedlin, Green, and even Johansson in the mix that won't be the case for long.

Let's also be honest. When your plans are thrown into disarray because you lose Jozy Altidore, your options are rather limited.

I'm talking as a noob on the EU leagues now, is this Jozy that good? Some of the guys that people said that were good on this WC I've heard about in my inner circle or even in the media, but not this one.

They did the best they could against a good Belgium team = Solid effort. They kept them at bay for 93+ minutes, had their chances to win it, and defended well enough to keep it close.

We could play your hypothetical game all day long and say it could have been this, it could have been that, but at the end of the day it was 0-0 after 93. 2-1 in FT. So like I said, a solid effort.
"But, but if this one guy on the team wasn't on the team then the team wouldn't have been as good of team!"

That's some strong genes.

March-October.

FWIW, USL Pro games all stream live on YouTube if you want to familiarize yourself with Orlando City.

Yeah... that's probably a good Idea since I was looking at their roster and I don't know anybody.

That was way too exciting to be healthy. Good game USA, props to Howard. Finally Belgium showed what it can do and hopefully they can keep it up in the next round.

I enjoyed watching these games. Are MLS games usually this good? Or close? I know NY is getting a new club soon and I'll give an effort to follow them because following the premiere league is difficult.

They're not bad. They're not Premier League level but it's still pretty good.

New York already has a club. Red Bulls. ;-)

Also, Premier League isn't too difficult to follow if you have the NBC Sports Network. If it isn't on TV, it's streamed. Just pick a team and follow them throughout.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Ok now that I'm no longer on my work computer, where's the best place to see highlights/gifs of the US-Belgium match?

Shame mls games are not on broadcast TV like every other sport

Of course they are. NBC Sports has the rights currently, but MLS just signed a deal with them and ESPN for the next couple seasons. At the very least, there will be two games on every Sunday and essentially every game will be available on ESPN3, and ESPN has his hinted you might not even need a cable subscription to stream them.

Feasted on the MURICA tears and came back for the salt. Keep this going.

That's the best you've got? Doesn't sound very appetizing; not like there's been a deluge of tears or salt. Stay hungry, man.

Americans always obsessed with how athletic someone is. If only LeBron played soccer, right guys.

I don't personally think LeBron would translate well to soccer, even if you subbed soccer into his life for basketball. A LeBron-like soccer talent would have to do the trick, not LeBron himself.

If I was a US fan I would be really pissed at the performances the team had the entire tournament. They never looked the better team in any of their matches in the group stage and got results from random moments of individual skill and set pieces rather than good structured play. The Defence was awful in every game they played, they just didn't get punished very often, or Howard kept them in it. They showed great spirit at the end of the match today, but not much else. They absolutely deserved their spot in the second round based on their results, but they never looked convincing in getting them.

I love how some Americans think if you "cared" you'd magically turn into world cup winners.

Cop out shite equal to "well we weren't even trying".

Some of my fellow Americans need to relax on the "but we don't really care about soccer and if we did we'd be blah blah blah" shit. The team we have did well, but not good enough to make it any further. If you want our game to improve then do more to support it in the States, otherwise quit being bitter cunts about it.

Nah, some things should be left unspoken. Also I wouldn't want to be on the bad side of the german members, since I'm actually rooting for Germany for quite some time in this WC.

If you won't I will.

We don't need no PC people here! Say it.

SAY IT!

ZAY IT NAO!

History that's really only existed in the last fifty years.

If you look at the genesis, it goes back to the late 1800's. College football paved the way for what eventually became what we have now. Realistically, the NFL in it's different forms reaches back to the 1920's. Yes, we are in the Superbowl era, but history existed prior.

Oh man the BEL-NED semi is getting closer.

Both countries would lose their shit if this happened. I don't even care if we'd win or lose that, how cool would it be to get that matchup.

Neighbors, pls beat Costa Rica. We'll do the same against Argentina

That would be wonderful.

He was unstoppable when he was with AZ Alkmaar, he had like 52 goal in the two years he spent with them, but had a horrible first year with Sunderland. He had a bit of a scoreless streak with the US as well, but got a brace against Nigeria right before the game with Ghana. If he didn't go down with that injury I think he'd be having a lot of guys eat crow.

I'm surprised we made it this far. Also Howard was amazing

It's not all about athletics m8.

Messi can't run more than any other player at the world cup, is short etc but he's still the best in the world.

If soccer was the biggest sport in usa, your best players physique would not resemble LeBron James' for example.

Not sure if I'm making sense her by I'll click 'post' anyway.

A few years ago, he played in Germany and did very well.

Last year, he moved to the Premier League and Sunderland. He had a terrible year, leading up to the World Cup. He wasn't scoring at all. I believe he only scored two goals all year.

Last game of the three friendlies the US had, he scored two goals.

Overall, he's good but he was slumping badly before those two goals. That injury was devastating because everyone thought those two goals were all he needed to get back into the swing of things.

We've already got the Red Bulls! Although the stadium they play in is actually in Jersey lol. Not that far from Manhattan.

Since you brought up the other club; does anyone know the status on the proposed stadium in Queens? I haven't heard a peep about it since De Blasio got elected.

I don't get the US played bad defense posts. I think they played pretty damn good defense for the tournament. The problem was they played way too much of it.

Somewhat agree. Put any other goalie in, and the results would have been disastrous.

I think I'm gonna root for the Netherlands. They are some cool folk.

Ever since they opened Spain a new one, I have a hard time rooting against them, even in the Mexico match. I'd like an underdog to win (Costa Rica) but if Netherlands come out I hope they can get what they almost got last WC.

The only sport in the US that is still on broadcast TV during the regular season is the NFL.

Yeah. Gladly I can watch each Sounders game. Fox should be getting MLS soon (Or was it the world cup, can't remember) so it should be better.

I can't speak for other teams, but going to Sounders games are always a blast. Everyone who lives close to an MLS team should definitely go out.

Sad the US lost, but Belgium played the better game most of the time. Tim Howard was GOAT though. Goddamn. And I was actually starting to believe we were going to have an epic comeback in the last 15 there. Absolutely nuts, and a great game overall. Why the hell didn't we play like those last minutes for the whole second half of the game?

There's truly a defense force for everything, even Michael Bradley.

Dude cracked under the pressure of the big stage. You can't deny that.

No he just doesn't fit the role he is playing. He is more of a defensive minded midfielder who is tireless and wins posession in midfield. During his entire career in Europe he wasn't used as a playmaker.
He just has to fill this role due to a lack of other options. He is a quality player though.

Pretty much. Hypothetical horseshit.

The argument is that the best American athletes bubble up to the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL. If that talent pool was dedicated solely to soccer as it is in other countries, the talent level would rival any country in the world.

That's just one piece of the puzzle though. The coaching has to be on the level as well. Our best coaching minds are in American Football, so they would have to follow suit as well.

The local neighborhood put the kabosh on it, so they'll be playing at Yankee Stadium for the first 3 years until the find a site.

Sorry you are out USAGAF. You gave us a hell of an entertaining game though. Now if the remaining matches are half this good, this would have been an amazing world cup through and through.

They're planning to play in Yankee Stadium but that's a hot mess until the stadium is build but it's a hot mess.
