Shovel Knight |OT| The 8-bit adventures of Butt Butt Goes to Europe & Australia

I got this a couple nights ago and played a little and thought it was going to be awesome. Played a few hours yesterday and didn't enjoy it at all. I'm not going to give up on it yet though.

Updated the game on steam and my NES controller still doesn't work. It's an original using the retron usb adaptor. Anyone get this to work? If not, anyone know the best way to contact them b/c I'm sure many of us want to use an new controller.

I did check their control binding database and it says retrNES and NES controllers are in there but no luck.........

Speedrunning this game is fun. Trying to get that 1 hour 30 minutes feat.
Fuck that suit of armor. I found out the hard way that unless you stop before a screen transition and let your momentum take you forward, instead of letting go of the D-pad mid transition, your momentum would force you forward on the new screen. So far it's the only death I've had that I would call unfair.
Mail of Momentum needs a buff. As is, Magic Armor and Dynamo Armo completely outclass it for an experienced player.

Game looks fantastic with the CRT shader in SweetFx on PC. Definitely loving it that way.

Oh that's awesome. Didn't know PC version had filters like that or is that a mod change?

Why did you choose to make the game look worse with a fakey CRT filter?

Ehh it looks decent for what it's trying to pull off. Then again I like those kinds of filters for retro games just to mess around with at times. Don't think I would play the whole game with it on though.. my EYEEEES

Do any Steam users want to trade some Shovel Knight cards? PM me. I need 1, 4, 5 and 8. I have an extra 6 and other cards to trade if you want.

SK is somewhat easier solely due to having infinite lives and a generous amount of checkpoints on normal difficulty.

I never really considered Mega Man 9 all that hard though.

Can't you just destroy the checkpoints though? People that want it harder have a chance to make the game harder for themselves which I think is great.

Megaman 9 was tough the first time through the game though since you had to get used to the stages and new minibosses. I can beat the game Megaman 9 pretty easy these days though.

Well, that was quick... someone on GameFAQs extracted all the cheat codes from the game and is going to post all of them in a couple hours. He's still trying to work out what everything does. Most of the first batch he posted just start you with a relic and give you infinite use of them except this one.

Code #43: STGZURSC (starts you on NG+ with everything unlocked, 0 music sheets collected)

aww man.

Although I do want to play around with all the cheat codes. I kind of wish the people that kickstarted $100+ had a chance for their codes sent to them to be their very own secret, at least for just a bit.

Code 42: RQQYUKIJ Starts New Game + with no upgrade.

^ Perfect for the people that want more of a challenge right from the first play through.

Edit:

I'm not sure if that Gamefaqs list of 321 cheat codes is ALL of the codes,

The 3 codes we knew about already had "&" and "!" characters in them and numbers "1" "4" and "2", the gamefaqs code list looks like it's just alphabet based with no extra characters

I'm thinking there are probably more codes, if somebody brute forces it with all the punctuation and numbers not just the alphabet.

Help! Late game spoilers

I'm doing the fight with Shield Knight and I have no idea how to damage the boss. It looks like Shield Knight is making a platform for me to jump on with her shield but I can't jump that high. What am I supposed to do?

You have to shovel bounce on the shield. It's not a regular platform that you can just stand on.

Try shovel dropping onto the shield, your hitbox is big enough
.

I am enjoying it this feels so much like an RPG I am grinding to get my weapon magic levels up

but I am not very skilled at this game at all need all the cheap wins I can get

I net you abuse the phase locket...
So do I :(

oh don't have it yet had little time to play spent most of the day in the hospital, played an hour to take my mind of things now that i'm home

one of the things i loved about nes games are nice items you can spam ;p

play more when i wake up

Ahahaha, I beat the game in 1:29:03. Less than a minute to spare. Wow.

Only 15 deaths, too!

Also I love the part of the credits music that sounds like an '80s power ballad.

Finished the game last night just a little later than I should have been up. Charming game, A+, would kickstart again.

The ending was adorable.

ah not going to use cheat codes until i have done my own achievements but glad they are in there

wish it was harder like nes days and not someone just going into the game code to find them heh

I'm sure there were people that were doing that back in those days but it wasn't as easy to spread that kind of information as it is now.

That's no fun :( Party ended early.

insomnia sucks! Let me ask has anyone heard any word of cool DLC maybe something like play as
Shield Knight
?

yeah i miss those days of magazines and word of mouth from friends at school lol

That was how it was spreading, until this no-fun guy spoiled the party.
He couldn't have waited or something, at the very least?

agreed, he should have waited this is a beautiful retro gem
I could say avoid GameFaqs but it will spread fast, wish we had two good months for discovery

7 hours into the game, first post in this thread. Glad to see the word GOTY thrown around here. For me it easily is but since I play few new games these days the sentiment does not mean all that much from me.

About to enter Propeller Knight's level... I don't want it to end.

Also, I'm playing on the 3DS but the idea of playing this game on my TV with the classic controller increases my frothing demand for a Wii U.

Shovel Knight has acted REALLY funky with the controllers I've tried, but none of them have straight out not worked. That's such a shame; Shovel Knight was built for a NES controller.

Looks like they respond to tweets regularily; try sending them one about it: https://twitter.com/YachtClubGames

Which version? I didn't realize there was more than one version.

I'm playing on the Wii U if that helps.

I think he means which console version. B and A aren't on the typical 360 PC controller.

Does anyone else love the presentation of the story? Because of the limited format of text, there's a lot of implication and undercurrents that don't get noticed until you actually beat the game. In that way, it feels like a power metal storyline: the written story is only a few lines per song, with a good portion of the story being represented by the guitar solo, and only when you finish it and go back over it does the meaning of the music become clear.

This might be a slight stretch, but not a huge one because Sean told me that he's a fairly big Luca Turilli fan.

I am about to buy this on Wii U, but I'd be remiss if I didn't ask: is there any chance of this coming to Playstation platforms in the near future? I'd rather get it there because of the likely Cross-Buy, but if we have no word of a near-future release, I'll just buy it on Wii U.

Define near future. Probably not for quite a few months. There's no implication of any sort of date on a playstation version.

I like the lack of exposition too.

Their first priority for porting is getting the game on mac and linux.

Mole Knight's level kicked my butt. I can't tell you how many times I went back to the title screen to restart with all my loot. I didn't realize that I was starting to lose thousands upon thousands of diamonds/coins/whatever whenever I died, and that really tripped me up. lol

I really loved all the level mechanics that were featured in the stage though.
The green jello was especially fun; I have a thing for levels with bouncy mechanics. I also loved using the jello to change the terrain around me; it was really fun and creative.

Just beat the game! Took me 5:56 to finish it, and I collected everything except for 19 music sheets. Died 88 times :(

That scene near the end when
All the Knights in the Order where just drinking and munching was pretty funny.

Yeah, that's what I meant, thank you.

I play on PC with a 360 controller, whach has A and B by the way, but swapped, if you compare it to Wii U.

So what is the default key setup on Wii U and 3DS?

And which button works as back on the menu, and which as confirm?
