buying PS3... I got some questions

I am planning on buying a PS3 now and have some questions. I hope some of you can help me.

1. When I buy a PS2 backwards compatible PS3 do I need to have a PS2/PS Memory Card for saving PS2 and PS games?

2.I could get a used one cheap from a far relative who says his PS3 just froze during gameplay and cannot read discs since then. Could it be that the disc drive is broke or is there a slight chance that it is just some software problem which could be fixed with an update?

3. Is there a PS3 VGA cable available?

4. Is a component cable included with a new PS3?

Thanks very much!

No, the PS3 emulates memory cards in software. If you have a lot of old memory cards, you may want to buy the adapter to copy over the data.

Doesn't sound like a great deal to me. There isn't a good knowledgebase on how to fix PS3 hardware issues, like there is with the Red Ring issue. On the plus side, Sony will repair an out-of-warranty PS3 for $150.

No, but you can get a HDMI->DVI cable for your monitor.

No. If you have one with your PS2, it is compatible.

can you do 4:3 screen ration with 720P?

On a 4:3 monitor? It'll probably end up stretched, but you can probably adjust the ratio with your monitors settings.

wouldn't HDCP get in the way?

Depends on the monitor. Mine is HDCP-compliant.

No. They allow you to make "virtual" ones on the PS3 itself.

Not sure, could always sell it for some money or get it refurbished if they are doing that now.

3. Is there a PS3 VGA cable available?

Not sure, could always buy a converter though I think.

4. Is a component cable included with a new PS3?
Nay.

(2) is not that uncommon. It's a blu-ray laser head problem, most likely. Needs to be replaced. I don't know Sony's rates.
