I recently started going back and listening to the Idle Thumbs podcast going all the way back to the first episode. It just happens that today I landed on episode 107, the one where Ryan is a guest on the show. Got bummed out for a moment but now im just letting myself enjoy it : )

A fridge is funny and all but isn't the problem that the point where the drinks originate isn't cold? I mean they have a kitchen with a fridge on their floor already.

I think "because it's dumb and funny," is all the justification needed for anything GiantBomb-related.

I mean, it's a gesture to thank Matthew Rorie for his hard work. The fridge is just the most relevant gift at the moment and not just for a joke.
But it's also a dumb joke too.

What if it just ends up being a huge burden? Like Rorie trying to bike home with it strapped to his back because you're not allowed to have your own fridge at the office.

I mean, a fridge would be hilarious considering the awareness he's raised concerning vending machine temperatures, I'm just concerned that he won't get much use out of it. But I don't want to just come in here and say "no that's a stupid gift!" so here's some brainstorming. Off the to of my head gift ideas would be:

Bike stuff? I don't bike so I'm clueless here but he talks about biking a lot.
PS Vita memory card? Not sure how useful this would be to him but he talks about his vita a fair bit.
Dog stuff, obviously. Not sure what exactly, but it'll make him smile. Also thrown in a few "cats are better than dogs!" things just for jokes.
He has a PS4 right? I'm trying to think of good accessories for it. Maybe a headset like the Playstation Gold?
He cuts his own hair, maybe something related to that? Really stretching here.

And considering how much we've raised already it looks like we'll be able to get him multiple gifts. I'll contributing some too once I get out of bed.

I think the fridge and dumb dog stuff is fine. No need to complicate a dumb internet gesture with practicality.

Pretty sure there was enough money already sent in to get a fridge, but I felt like I needed to help out.
Chipped in a bit, Aaron.

This is gonna be the best fridge ever.

Also, that Harry Potter QL is still one of the best QLs the site has ever done. Miss you, Ryan.

We're at $295 currently. That'll buy a lot of puppy magnets.

Considering the holiday, I should place the order in around four hours to get it on Monday. So people should decide exactly what I need to buy.

I vote for the nice $200 one. If we're doing this might as well get him a quality one.

I do love the idea of starting with "Lets get Rorie a fridge!" and then ending up at sending him a robust barber kit with the message "For Practicality!" instead

Don't feel obligated to order it before the holiday (if only because some of us have to wait for our funds to be available). It'll be appropriate a gift at any date.

its kinda scary that it seems like the new guys might actually be good at video games.

If I didn't know any better Brad being Brad with cooking the lizards would seem staged to me.

The bit towards the end, where he was close to starvation, away from his camp, had one raw lizard left in his backpack and no other food, put the lizard on the fire walked away to gather sticks, came back and looked at his perfectly cooked lizard just long enough to see it char and disappear, anyone but Brad, you'd think it was intentional.

Yeah, no lie, I saw the thumbnail for "Letter from the Editor" on the front page, and I got flashbacks from when I used to get in trouble as a kid.

"IT WASN'T ME DAD! IT WAS THE INTERNET!"

If people keep donating, at some point there could be enough money to ship him a 4 door fridge freezer. Imagine hooking that thing up by his desk.

That's fine by me. Even if I place the order on Saturday or Sunday, I'll still receive it by Tuesday. Gives time for people to pick out the specific magnets, wrapping paper, and other stuff they want for this silly thing.

yeah, like how Brad used to play video games, and now he just Dotas

Brad was always a specialist. Whether it was Starcraft or Dota he's always been the guy to get way into a single long term competitive game.

It's actually really smart, one guy having that awareness of esports and such like that. Jeff covers the FGC angle more then most out there. They cover a lot of bases. (Though I'd still prefer it if Brad got into League rather then Dota, the "Dota hubris" is strong for anyone and Brad's no exception, at least he's stopped bring it up himself like he did back in the early days of his addiction =P)

Anyway, long story short: Brad's a hell of a lot better at games then people give him credit for, he puts in long hours on his specialist game and they pay off Just compare his play early on to now. I bet he'd trounce much of the community (though with such a large community of course there's still 10% ultra powers among them)
