Disingenuous? You mean like ignoring his size at every other point in DK64 EXCEPT the final boss?

donkey-kong-and-k-rool-o.gif

I don't think a post-credits blooper reel is really much of a case for him as anything but a gargantuan in DK64. The entire game he's portrayed as much bigger than both his minions and the Kongs, and you can see it yourself when you get to Hideout Helm. His throne is massive, and that's where he's seen for most of the game.

He's inconsistent, but he's always bigger.

Size means shit in Smash. How else do you explain Olimar? Dude is like an inch tall.

But it is more aesthetically organic to make a small character larger than a large character smaller. Many large characters use their size as an essential part of their design. Characters like Olimar are never depicted in reference to any normal sized characters, so they appear as normal in their own context. Kirby is 8" tall, but is only ever seen in relation to Dedede and Meta Knight, so their scales and sizes can be translated out because they all have their own size relativity that easily transfers out.

Characters like K Rool and, more specifically, Ridley are seen in relation to characters in Smash Bros. People say you can shrink Ridley to make him work, and you probably could, but then you are violating the established scale and Ridley's relations to Samus.

And even if Ridley has been Samus sized in the past, Ridley has only gotten bigger and bigger. The regular player's expectation is that Ridley is significantly larger than Samus.

So yes, size DOES matter.

Random thought, I was watching some direct feed footage of Smash 3DS, and I can't help but think that the "full" version of the X/Y Trainer Battle arrangement reminds me a lot of the Pokemon anime's BGM.

As much as a I loathe the anime, I do think that the guy who does the anime's BGM does a really, really good job, and there are a few bits in there that sounds like his style.
Luigi doesn't have his own victory song I guess? Hopefully that's just because it's the demo

just mocking the Kremlins = K. Roll connection.

The Kremlins are in there because they are Donkey and Diddy Kong enemies. Nothing more, nothing less.
We know that a Kremling is a boss though. Polar bears aren't a boss.

I would hope k Rool is a boss, if only because that's the only way he'll make it into the game.

Jeez, I expected NeoGAF of all places to be less susceptible to the goddamn "Ridley is TOO BIG" playbook of pretending canon size matters more than Sakurai's perception of a character (Sakurai, a guy who explicitly referenced Smash sizes not being canon in multiple pics), or dismissing valid size comparisons as "not counting" for XYZ reasons.

I'm not here to convince anyone who has convinced themselves that K. Rool is best represented as a mediocre boss, nor that "he's not in a game, therefore he has no chance" is bad reasoning. If you're a fan of the character, and I know I've seen some of you on here before supporting him, I hope you support the Kremling Kampaign. If you're not, whatever.

I don't care about K. Rool's size, I just don't think he's an important enough character to get in over Dixie. I don't want him to be completely absent, however, so I hope he's a boss (which he's a perfect fit for).

King K. Rool is still the most important Donkey Kong villain whose name doesn't rhyme with Wario.

1. If you added every Ridley Size joke of all OT's in a new thread I'm pretty sure you'd fill the 400 pages

2. Everyone here knows that the roster design was finished two years ago and a petition won't change anything. Making more jokes on the other hand is more fun (although I don't speak for every member in this sentence ofc), so that's what happens instead :P

A Ridley joke thread would be TOO BIG to archive....

was king k rool even in the retro games? as much as I'd like him in playable form, I doubt he'd ever make it in
If we get a third game in the Returns series, I suspect K. Rool and the Kremlings will be the villains. It makes sense. Especially if they're revamped to be more badass.

In Donkey Kong 64, he's ten times the size of Smash Bros.' largest character. He'd work absolutely fine as a boss -- don't be disingenuous. He towers over DK in Donkey Kong Country, too.

That's true, but in a lot of his appearances (mostly his most recent ones in games like King of Swing/Jungle Climber and Mario Super Sluggers) he's in the same range as DK/Bowser. It's sort of a reverse Ridley scenario, in a way; to me he's just not meant to be huge and intimidating as SSB bosses are, and in just about every post-Rareware game he's been featured in, he's not. Seeing a goofy, overweight crocodile tower over Bowser or Ganondorf would be off-putting to me. Regardless of his role in the game I would not want him to be much bigger than Bowser, that's just not the kind of character K. Rool is usually depicted as.

That said I thought having a gigantic Petey Piranha tower over Bowser was pretty dumb as well so it's not like I'd entirely be surprised.

If you're talking about Lords with multiple weapon types Sigurd deserves a mention for being the only Lord to be able to wield lances and swords from the get go. He's also the only Lord to start off fully promoted and subjectively completely OP.

ah i didnt know about sigurd :T ( i only know about the games released here with a little bit of knowledge on roys and eliwoods games)

I finally got free time so I registered my friend code. If anyone want to play Project M with me then please let me know!

90% that thread would be closed because, "there is already a Smash Bros. discussion thread". Pretty sure the reason they let us have these threads is to keep these arguments from spilling out into their own threads every other week.

Good point.

How in the world could you basically say that Olimar's size isn't integral to his design? I mean come on! He may not have other insect like creatures to compare himself too but when he was first introduced into Brawl I thought his large size was a little jarring. Of course we never really had much time to consider how weird it would look so of course after all these years his giant size means nothing to us. I will say though that Squirtle next to Pokemon Trainer really blows my mind with every victory he gets. Still, no body cares when it's all said and done.

And you are wrong, ROB's head can be found in Pikmin 2 and Olimar can fit in his eye lense. Not to mention Pikmin were found in Mario Golf Toad Stool Tour, smaller than Mario's golf ball.

Away with your Ridley toobigley nonsense!

Three, actually! Two if you're in Japan. Can you believe it?

No, I can't! Only two more months!
And the best part is that this year's Press Start (orchestral game concert) is being held on Smash 3DS's release date, and the orchestra will be performing an extensive selection of Smash music from all games in the series! Needless to say, I'm extremely excited to play the game, check out the concert, and have Sakurai sign my copy of the game.

I was under the impression all of those Nightly Ridley GIFs were ironic, in reference to the bottom-feeding, one track-minded prepubescents on YouTube and Miiverse who think newcomer candidates are decided 100% on the basis of whether their size is "TOO BIG" or "NOT TOO BIG" in their source material.

Also, the Kremling Kampaign is focused on DLC, which, according to the Gematsu leak, is in the cards, not the actual roster, which was done years ago.

Ooh, tell us how it is! Apparently the SSB4 segment is a medley of some sort? I always hated how we haven't gotten recordings from the past few years...I want to hear the Xenoblade/Kirby/Kid Icarus: Uprising stuff dammit!

At least we can always treasure this Mother Medley.

Pikachu is a foot tall. Charizard should be five times taller.

Scale doesn't mean shit in Smash. They have a Steel Diver sub as a handheld weapon, for fuck's sake.

The reason Ridley won't be playable is because he's a boss from a niche series that's currently not even in development.

Real reason why Ridley probably won't be a playable character. Sakurai doesn't want him to be.

It's a Steel Diver-themed gun with a grip and trigger -- it's not supposed to be an actual submarine (obviously).
Yes, but these scale discussions are still stupid as shit from the moment Fox was playable on the Great Fox stages.

you don't know that ;-;
Judging by the Kotaku interview, Nintendo's in the planning stage for a new Metroid at most.

And I'm perfectly fine with that, because it means I won't be spending money on a Wii U to get one.

Show of hands, would anyone actually be offended if Ridley were scaled down, to the point where your enjoyment of the game is lessened?

If no one cares, then it doesn't matter in the first place.
