Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

I can see Dan being the antagonist slowly but surely killing Brad's spirit, every fail state slowly inching him towards the metaphorical cliff, ending the Breaking Brad series forever which I would be totally ok with.

Was watching some old stuff on twitch that isn't really on their site, and I skimmed through this video.

Is that Danny at 49:29 asking a question?

I wonder how they became friends so early on. That wasn't long after Danny joined Gamespot UK. And Giant Bomb hadn't yet been bought by CBSi. They must have met at GDC or something.

Danny was an active blogger on GS (posts dating back to 2007) and regularly submitted questions to On The Spot, so they were aware of him well before he was employed by GS.

Holy shit that's totally danny.

It's crazy how much Danny was into early Gamespot and ended up living his dream.

He even followed Jeff's exact advice on how to break into the industry - he set up his own blog, got a camera and just started doing it. His youtube is filled with his early work and his recent No Man's Sky feature uses some of that footage. He knew what he wanted and went for it.

It's kinda why The Lobby exists - he wants to relive On The Spot's glory days. Shame there are very few personalities at GS to support him, that's what made OTS so good, everyone was way into it. Danny basically has to carry The Lobby on his back.

But he'S saying "I grew up in the UK"
Northern Ireland is in the uk.

watched the freedom stream last night and i've got to say, i don't think i'll ever tire of jeff calling dota players league of legends players

Brad's dota team is named League of Legends.

But yeah, him and dan pretty much made fun of them all day.

I guess posting comments like "Cmon guys, we all want more feminism articles written by gay feminazis here on giant bomb..." gets you banned from their forums. Who'd have thought?

edit: Also "If you wanna read about the terrible misogynist world we live in go elsewhere."
Jeff made it pretty clear that it's not the community who gets to say who are welcome at Giant Bomb.
That's great, he saw how all the GBers thought people like him didn't represent them at all, and actually just completely left like they asked. Why can't they all be so accommodating?

Re: Scoops & The Wolf. Calling Civ Rev 2 a small graphical upgrade doesn't really tell how big a change it is:

It's certainly closer to the Civ Rev console versions now, but iOS users had been missing that.

its also imo a bit more clunky due to it being 3d, and the UI still isn't 100% great.

They really working Dan hard on his second week eh? :D

great hire so far.

Danny didn't grow up in the UK or NI.

Unless this is a "all Irish men sound a like" joke that I missed.

Yeah I thought he grew up in Waterford.

Maybe he said the uk to give more understandable context to his amiga question.

I remember there was a call on one of the old live shows where a guy read some old Irish poem with a full on accent. It went on forever and it was pretty hard to understand and Jeff's only response was, "I think he just activated a terrorist cell." I wonder if that was Danny as well.

That is Danny. Not sure why he said that, maybe he thought it would just be simpler to say UK since the game releases are the same for UK/Ireland and Jeff would be familiar with the UK scene.

Can somebody explain the drama that happened with Jeff writing that article?

I feel like I missed something.

Was it the Feminism- Men's Rights thing again.

I mean I was angry that Paulie Shore wasn't hired so I was busy protesting outside of CBSi for that.

What article?

I have a feeling the Monday Quick Look is solely because Jason has not fully learned how to use the GB CMS, and published the Quick Look by accident instead of scheduling it for the usual time. It is almost common place that GB gets up 2 QL on Tuesday, but looking at today's lineup, the 2PM (my local time) is still there, but the usual 5PM (my local time) one is not there. All signs point to Contraption Maker getting uploaded ealy by accident - it was supposed to be the late QL today

Conspiracy!

They can't fire him, he's the people's hero now!

Basically the internet, but to be more specific, human nature.

..channeled through Twitter.

Both the critics and the fans were ridiculous about it. GB hired two guys they liked and think are up for the job. Nothing more, nothing less. People can keep their conspiracies to themselves.

Did they ever quick look that arty looking game about fish falling in love with birds that was announced / released at Sonys E3?

Entwined? No. Didn't get that well received, either, I think.

Huh. Forgot about this stream. Isn't archived on the site, right?

Yup. I completely forgot about Jeff doing this gameroom stuff. Hopefully all this stuff that is missing gets archived on the site too. They have more help, so they should be able to.

But I haven't seen that much vitriol towards other sites hirings.

Was this a case of the extremes getting amplified by the internet or twitters character limitations leading to poor communication?

Or is this partially a response to Patrick's articles seemingly conflicting with the choice of the new staff?

I'm just glad that Jeff wrote a response and didn't leave something like this to fester. He should write more.

The MRA section of Reddit and 4chan got involved.

Shortly before the announcement of the hires, a prominent critic and fan of of the site brought attention to the fact GB has no female employees on staff. This put a lot of eyes on the upcoming announcement. When the news came it was two straight white guys, some people were vocally disappointed with it. It didn't help that Polygon and IGN had apparently also just hired two straight white guys.

The critics, for the most part, were thoughtful and well reasoned. They understood GB is a small site with few editors, but its influence is very far reaching, becoming a bit of a bastion for the industry.

At that point, Giant Bomb got caught in the middle of a war between the critics and so-called 'anti-SJWs' from 4chan and Reddit. It got ugly, GB's community was (IMO) unfairly blamed, and Jeff had to step in.

One day, maybe not in our lifetime, respectful, critical discussion will be able to happen on the internet. Today is not that day.

Nothing to do with Patrick. A lot to do with twitter giving the worst people on both sides larger voices to speak with than they deserve.
