how many magic fruits are there or is it a mystery

is the goal of most pirates to find them

do people sell them if they get a second or give it to friends or what

I don't think Oda ever gave a ceiling for devil fruits.

Most pirates want to become rich and unquestioned. A lot want to find Gol D. Roger's treasure. Super powers usually help for that stuff, especially since most people they fight also have them. Doflamingo wants to murder a bunch of people, so that really helped his goal!

People usually sell them. There was a situation recently where (I'll keep it vague)
Luffy was trying to win a devil fruit for personal reasons because he didn't want anyone else to have it, but then had to leave and let his friend take his place to win and subsequently eat the fruit.

I think Jeff's dislike of anime comes from his exposure to older anime video games.
He'd probably like crazy / dumb ones like Bobobobo bobobo or JoJo.

Was watching some old stuff on twitch that isn't really on their site, and I skimmed through this video.

Is that Danny at 49:29 asking a question?

Holy shit. I totally don't even remember this. It actually made me kind of sad for obvious reasons.

Thanks for posting mate. And yea I guess I said "UK" because it thought it would give clearer context or something. I think Commodore is most thought of as a 'UK thing'.

Guys, I'm worried.

I think when the whole discussion about the new hires turned into a debate about gender, race, class, etc. (all of which has some merit, I believe), we were all missing the larger problem. The argument was made time and time again that "Dan is the perfect fit" for Giant Bomb because of his attitude and preferences. And while I think that's totally correct in one way, it bothers me in another way.

This past week of content has served as an illustration that with Dan, we're kind of just getting another Jeff. Dude who likes wrestling, hates anime, thinks MOBAs are weird, so on and so forth. You could see this as a positive in that it strengthens a viewpoint that already existed, but I feel like it's a negative in that it closes a door for opposing or different game-related viewpoints not already represented at GB.

Part of what makes the site so great is the crossover between different types of players interacting with games that they might not have known about or cared about previously. I feel like with Dan and Jeff on many Quick Looks together, we're going to lose some of that, especially now that the team is scattered all over the country.

Maybe I'm overreacting. Maybe it's nothing, and things will be better than ever now. I'd love to be proven wrong. Does anyone else feel this way?

And now you see why so many people were frustrated when they didn't hire a qualified woman or person of color. And I like Dan a ton. I think he'll work well. But they need another person, another viewpoint in the office badly, especially since Patrick is in Chicago.

EDIT: not that being a woman or person of cor would automatically make it different. But there's not enough disagreement on things anymore, or at least, not until the GOTY deliberations. I would love to see someone like Evan Narcisse join the team and provide different perspectives to the ones we already have.

Yeah, I'm kind of bummed about Dan so far. Seems like a nice guy and there's been some funny moments but his viewpoints are for the most part identical to Jeff. Do we need another person endlessly hating on anime(joking or not)? In most of the quicklooks so far its just been wrestling references and agreeing with Jeff. His tastes in games seem pretty mainstream as well. Was really hoping for someone like Patrick who will at least look outside the box at times. Or someone with PC game experience. With Patrick, Dan, and Vinny gone it's a bit limited in terms of variance in taste for me. The San Francisco guys are still funny and I enjoy watching them of course though.

We're only getting the cliffnotes of Dan at the moment. It's probably going to take a while for the finer textures of him to come out and for him to get to a comfortable position where he can safely shit on one of Jeff's opinion in a humorous way. It felt like he was kinda laying over every time Jeff said something counter to him on the Freedom Stream or Twisted Metal QL.

And who knows. Maybe being at Giant Bomb and being forced to cover "dumb" stuff from sectors of the internet will mean he'll get super deep into something specific.

one piece has a skeleton with an afro because he ate a fruit that gave him a "second life" but his soul got lost trying to re-find his body and when he found it it was a skeleton

the primary purpose of him being a skeleton is to make corny skeleton jokes

Keyser, both the Funimation and One Piece sites have a ton of episodes up, both subbed and dubbed. I remember there being a few holes in which there'd be maybe 10 episodes in a row that weren't dubbed, but I think they have since patched those. I got up to around episode 70 or so until there was a giant hole of dubbed episodes spanning to episode 120 which is what made me stop, but last I checked those are now up. Might be a good way to check out the series to see if you like it.

Now I might get back into One Piece...

I'm sure black people and women think MOBAs are weird too.

Dan has not been here that long. It's not unrealistic to sort of follow the flow when you're starting. Sure he doesn't like Anime or he does like wrestling, but he still has other opinions which definitely aren't mirrored in the office.

For example, he's super big into Nintendo, and even did a 30 hour game marathon of Super Smash Bros (a great series with no GB love.) There's also his fanatic love for Yoshi's Island, and Luigi as a character. He even at one point said that he thinks Luigi is probably the best Mario character.

I don't think "interested in anime" or "not interested in wrestling" - as a whole - are going to be all that relevant for a video game covering job, when so few games are anime or wrestling games anyway.

Still a lot of room for opinions to differ.

there was a bad guy in one piece who was introduced as a nimble acrobat swinging around and climbing over buildings like some crazy parkour guy and another person insulted him by calling him a mountain monkey and then later he was presented with a banana shaped devil fruit from his boss and ate it

then he fought one of the heroes and activated his power to turn into a
giraffe

Yep, sounds like a manga.

Like you said, just because they're a different race or gender doesn't make them different. There's probably a gay, black woman out there that is exactly like Jeff.

But I disagree with the notion that they needed to hire someone that had a different perspective from Jeff. I think after Ryan's passing and Vinny leaving, the thing they needed the most of all was someone who gelled and had great chemistry with Jeff, the safe option, the thing that worked with them in the past. Because funny commentary over quick looks is Giant Bomb's bread and butter, and honestly, as much as I like Brad and Drew, they never matched up to Ryan + Vinny + Jeff combos.

With how great these Jeff + Dan videos have been I think they've made the right choice. Now their next hires can be someone different from the norm. Like when they hired Patrick, I felt that he's provided something way different to the site than what the other staff are doing, but they only hired him after Giant Bomb was well established and seemingly on solid ground.

I am legitimately excited to watch One Piece. I feel better about quitting wrestling now there is something new in my life

You are lying. Please tell me you are lying.
Anime talk. Please stop.
I don't think gender or race dictates the almost universal hatred/confusion about anime or MOBAs.

the "strongest man in the world" for most of one piece is literally a 12 foot tall hulk hogan in an olde tyme pirate jacket that he wears as a cape and his mustache is turned up instead of down, and also he can break the air by punching it

I like Dan, but more wrestling talk is a big negative for mine. Wrestling is UFC for people that haven't grown up yet; and I don't like UFC either..

I've been planning to read One Piece for a good while now (ever since I finished reading all of JoJo about a year ago) but I've held off to finish other things first and you guys are starting to break me. Please don't break me.

I didn't read OP for a long while because I got bored during Fishman Island

Then I started doing a podcast about shonen jump and I actually had to read it and, since then, it's been great

So as long as I keep having to read One Piece by obligation it will stay awesome

Alright, seeing Jeff and Dan reacting to One Piece for the first time is hilarious. I can only imagine what being blasted by all this insanity instantly would be like.

I sort of regret that watching as much batshit insane crap as I have, I've feel a little innoculated to insane bullshit. But there's always room for something to blow my mind

a dude in one piece once performed plastic surgery on another dude's face by kicking him in the face a bunch, and it actually worked

except the guy was so used to being ugly that his attempts to wink and make cool faces resulted in him just contorting his face around

To me, this screams "trying too hard."

edit - Actually, I changed my mind. It sounds like RNG Mad Libs, which I may have found amusing in 3rd grade.

if you keep going people won't have any reason to actually watch the damn thing

I don't see Dan as "another Jeff" at all, and I've been a Dan fan for a long time, since I found out about the Replay series on Game Informer.

Dan is super positive, full of energy, and excited about video games pretty much all the time (unless you talk about stuff he doesn't understand, like soccer or whatever), Jeff often seems pretty negative. Did you hear how excited Dan was to bring up Tail of the Sun in that Long Night quick look, when Jeff couldn't be any less interested in that weird game?

If anything, Dan seems like some sort of weird amalgam of Jeff and Vinny, and I'm not sure how that's a bad thing. :P

Since Jeff mentioned that Death Note sounds cool, I hope someone mails Giantbomb the Death Notes DVDs. Death Note has been a gateway to anime for several people I know.

People seem to be missing this important difference between Dan and Jeff

Dan seems to like Yoshi's Island

But maybe that just makes Dan Jeff from an alternate reality
