Senran Kagura: Siliconera interview @ E3 (SK Burst sold very well, fan service)

I remember when Marvelous announced they had an action based 2d game coming to the 3DS and I was like, WHAT!? Is this a Vanillaware game?! (They published Muramasa).... and then it turned out to be this shit.

Ouch, please, the less I see or hear of Vanillaware the better. I'm happy I can play SK.

Why not make a new thread for No, Thank You!!!? I'm sure it will be fun, haha.

You could try PMing a mod. Since these kinds of games are allowed (I know they don't have actual nudity, but if the trailers are any indication, they come pretty close), I don't see why a No, Thank You thread wouldn't be allowed.

Hmm, I think I'm gonna hold off for now. Perhaps in the future when it's a bit more clear what is, and is not, appropriate, it might be easier to have topics dedicated to these games. For right now, I guess it'll be best to keep the discussion in the VN community thread.
Just an update, I talked to bishoptl, and I actually got the go-ahead to do an OT for No, Thank You!!!, of course, it would have to be heavily monitored, and very strictly controlled.

The topic would have to be primarily about the storyline of the game, and references to any romantic/sexual scenes have to be all SFW.

My question is, would that be enough for people interested to merit an OT here about the game? I'd love to be able to discuss it here on GAF, and I think it would be cool to be able to set a precedent for more mature discussions about these types of games, as well as give exposure to content being released with gay guys and straight girls in mind, but only if people here would be receptive to it.

Just let me know. (I'm gonna cross post this to the VN community thread.)

Go for it, bro. When is the game getting released?

I'm planning on buying the game so count me in. At the very least, I will be a lurker.

Have to say gameplay is mediocre at best.

You REALLY have to like the characters to enjoy the game
Burst or Shinovi Versus? Because I imported SV without knowing the characters at all, and the gameplay was a lot of fun and incredibly solid.

Happy for you, HL :)

Muramasa is fucking shit. SKB > that travesty

Still deciding, but I'm leaning more and more towards yes. :)

It would be pretty cool to be able to give the game some exposure, and to lay groundwork for further games. (There is actually another western made BL/Bara that's potentially coming out before NTY that I'm also considering doing an OT for if it's okay with the mods.) Plus it shows other companies that products made with gay gamers in mind are not a taboo subject, and can be discussed on major sites like GAF.

It's all a matter of opinion. I remember back when I was raving about Princess Crown in a topic on another forum, and people were astounded that I could actually enjoy its "clunky" combat so much. But I genuinely did (to this day, I consider it the best Vanillaware title), and in fact preferred it to any fighting game I'd ever played at the time (important note: I do not like fighting games), and that seemed to be a concept no one could quite grasp for a while.

The gameplay in Senran Kagura is fairly unique. It draws upon the same inspirations as many other beat-em-ups, sure, but its execution is very much its own, and whether or not you prefer that to other beat-em-ups or consider it lacking depends entirely on your personal preferences as a gamer.

Now, I'm not going to say it's my favorite beat-em-up out there, but I do consider it well above average. I definitely prefer the "feel" of its combat, with all its aerial combos and such, to any of the classic beat-em-ups like Final Fight, Golden Axe, Double Dragon, etc., if only because I find that I can get the hang of it a lot more easily and can get genuinely GOOD at it much quicker (and thus feel like more of a badass, especially when I knock people into the stratosphere and air-juggle the hell out of them!).

Oh yeah, I totally agree. Kenichiro Takaki focus on making the gameplay really accessible really pays off. With Senran Kagura, you can start pulling nice combos and stuff within the very first minutes. Really fun.

Versus. I didn't know the characters either-I thought the game had some funny moments, but the combat never really clicked for me, so I never got far into it.

Never played Princess Crown, sorry to say. At first I thought you were talking about Code of Princess (which also seems clunky at first, but opens up once you get into the combo system). I like beat-em-ups a lot, but SK feels slow to me. I usually play Musou and Basara games (which are easy mode, I know) and REALLY got into Anarchy Reigns, so it could be that I just prefer a more frenetic style of gameplay.

:3

I wonder if they'd try to tie it to the SK series, or make a brand new IP.

This is the best chart I've ever seen in my life.

The shocking truth

The anime oversimplifies everything but it gives you a quick summary of the story, it also has tons of more fanservice.

This, in a nutshell.

When the first game was released on 3DS, the game proved to be divisive among the japanese public, between those who hate the bits of fanservice and prefer the hints of darker elements in the story, those who like the series exclusively for the fanservice (and the dakimakuras, and the mousepads...), and those who like the series for its weird balance between drama and comedy.

For some reasons that are everyone's guesses, every instances of the franchise on another medias has been somewhat bowdlerized - manga, but the anime is the worst offender as it focus exclusively on the fanservice, considerably simplified/softened the story (and is very badly written, almost nothing happen before the series hits episodes 5-6), and some of the characters have nothing in common with the games : Asuka was your typical hot-blooded shounen heros, she becomes a klutz; Hibari never evolves from being the 'chick' of the group; Ikaruga's role as being the one responsible for her schoolmates is ridiculed, etc.

I *do* like the anime, but it's far from being flawless :)

The fanservice was the sole reason I watched it. Other than that (even included), it's simply a poor anime. Though I wasn't aware it was missing great character details as Tom shared. Snippets are common for adaptations, but had no clue there was that much notable material overlooked for it.
