Will humanity ever give up eating meat? When?

I love eating meat, so I would think it will only end when we can no longer produce enough meat for everyone or some weird shit goes down with diseases, etc.

It is one of the things that will be viewed negatively in the distance future. 500 years ago people did not see anything wrong with slavery or misogynistic ideas. I am not equating eating meat with those in terms of impact; I am equating them in terms of acceptance. Those things were acceptable at one point in human history, but they are not today.

As the great da Vinci said,

“I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men.”

I eat meat everyday.

It's because skirt steak is leather when it's barely above medium rare. I'm more of a ribeye fan cooked rare.

Skirt steak cooked sous vide where all the connective tissue is allowed to dissolve (over about 48 hours) while still being medium rare is possibly the most delicious piece of beef there is.

We don't "need" meat?
I mean, I suppose one could live off things other than meat.
But why?
Is there an actual gain to it?

It takes 25x more energy to produce a calorie of beef as it does a calorie of corn. Chicken is a lot better, but still 6-7x more energy intensive than corn. Eggs and dairy products are even better still.

You can't bring up predator-prey balance when the population of humans are about 70x greater than the world's natural carry capacity. We haven't been strictly tied to natural ecosystems since the agricultural revolution.

If you really want to boil it all down, it is simply the privilege that comes with being the dominant life-form on this planet. We are no tied to natural ecosystems, because we shape them ourselves. The fact that getting meat is so easy for us, really does make it clear as day. You either accept the privilege, or you don't. I can understand both viewpoints, but know clearly where I stand. I quite frankly love meat, so I am indulging in this privilege fully.

I can't say eating meat is morally correct, not at all really. But I can live with that.

Since when do we not need meat? B vitamins are difficult for many people to extract from plant materials and some people can't. Are you saying we don't need B vitamins? You're wrong if you think so.

Unless you mean meat that is not from birds or sea creatures. That's a bad definition of meat, but if that's what you mean then I guess we'll never give that up.

I detect a parody thread, but just want to be cautious.

I am certain vat grown meat will arrive long before our moral singularity and I am cool with that. All steak s are amazing marbled Kobe? Aw uiss.

Probably in the future on some first world country, maybe Canada, New Zealand or Germany.

That and lab created meat.

Anyways, I feel just like you. I feel like a hypocrite but it's so fucking delicious. The only thing that freaks me out is when I bite on cartilage or I see a big vein popping out of the cut meat. That shit gets me grossed out.

Edit: Churrasco (skirt Steak) is the best piece of steak. Can't believe you americans don't eat it; at least I couldn't find some when I went to the US; only in hispanic grocery stores.

Where were you shopping? I can find it at any grocery store in Chicago (Im talking Jewel, Dominicks, mariano's, hell even walmart) I love skirt steak.

I am absolutely baffled at the idea that you assume we don't eat it because you couldn't find it lol.

Yeah, but you can't get the same nutrients from Corn that you can from meat.
Corn is a pure starch. It's a good filler but you can't really sustain body production with it like you can with animal protein.

The best I can muster is a refusal to eat veal. I can do without young calf meat. Otherwise, I have no problems eating meat like chicken. Hell, there's about 19 billion chickens in the world. I'm doing my part to contain any future chicken rebellion.

I wouldn't eat that if you paid me.

That's the only way I would consider eating a steak.

Same time we stop burning dinosaurs and million year old peat... Once it's no longer economically viable. If steak goes to Beluga caviar prices, I'll hunt the mighty tofudabeest exclusively.

FYI veal schnitzel is the best schnitzel. Yum.

My brother would say you're ruining your steak. Although I think you and me share something in-common here. I'm a well-done man myself, and sick of hearing his shit lol.

Substitute corn with any vegetable crop. It was just an example. Also, you can get what you need out of vegetables, eggs and dairy. Milk has one tenth the energy requirement of beef, since you are not growing entire cows every time you harvest. Eggs aren't as efficient as milk, but are still 5x less energy intensive than beef. Alternatively, cutting beef in favour of chicken leads to a 70% energy savings.

If meat ever became too expensive, our palates would adjust and it would be normative to not eat meat, at that point reintroducing it would probably seem like more trouble than it is worth.

Humans can't even digest corn without heavy processing.

Corn is fucking bullshit. All you absorb from it is sugar, which is poison.

Meat for life.

Not until lab-grown meat reaches perfection.

This, though even then I'm sure there'll be a huge number of people who still prefer "naturally occurring" meat.

I'm with the OP. I realise that there's a huge amount of animal suffering involved in the meat industry, but when I ask myself the question "Do you care enough about these animals to stop eating meat forever, knowing full well that your gesture won't be sparing even a single one of them?", my honest answer is "No."

Meat is delicious, and fortunately while growing a whole animal is ecologically no longer feasible to feed 7 billion humans, the research into lab-grown meat should become real edible product you buy in a supermarket in a decade or less.

Eating less, or no meat actually helps.

Why should we give up eating meat? Killing animals is wrong why?

Give me real reasons to quit eating meat that don't involve bullshit sentiments please.

I can (and do) get skirt steak at every traditional grocery store around me.

This isn't a movie thread...

But seriously, no amount of Food Inc. will stop me from eating meat. I love cooking and eating it, so help me God.
