Those are alts.

I rather have light suit recolor than no light suit reference at all.

Those models require time and money to create, and its not like creating a new model with tens of thousands of triangles for each reference they want to include for each character is a good management.

Its a waste of money.

Unlike trophies, playable models require armatures and special care to avoid clipping.

Its an unnecessary work for a minor fanservice that doesnt change anything on the game.
I'm pretty sure they won't run out of money.

Minor fanservice? In a game centered around fanservice?

Clipping? Have you seen the POTDs? there is a lot of clipping everywhere: Pikachu's tail, women's hair and dresses, Link's hat, DK's hands; Mario,Sonic,Luigi and Mac's gloves,Zelda' shoulder pads, etc)

Not unnecessary work, example. The same music remixed twice for the same stage.

Pallet swaps are not alts, technically the are, but in no other fighting game someone will say "alt" to refer to a different color, except people that want to justify the lack of Light Suit :(
Better than nothing I guess.

Smash going with general ambiances over specific locations is nothing new. Happened since day one, and continues to this day. I mean, the spacecraft you're fighting at in Brawl's Starfox level, which Sakurai went on and named the Pleiades? Debuted in Brawl, it never even appeared in a Star Fox game before.

The Gravity Suit color had the Prime visor color change, rather than keeping the green visor like in Super Metroid.

As far as Jigglypuff goes at least, although Sakurai never officially confirmed it, I always assumed that he just returned to its original concept as a "handicap" character. In the Pichu update in the melee site, it was said that Pichu's role as a handicap character was previously Jigglypuff's. Considering how there was no Pichu in Brawl, Jigglypuff might have gotten stuck with that "role" again, and this time it was actually weakened.

Wow that's just dumb of true... Nobody really cared that Pichu sucked because he was just a clone of Pikachu. If I wanted to play a good version of Pichu I had him but there is no such analog to poor Pufff....

Every time we get something, it turns into an argument about what we don't have. Not that we should just be accept whatever we get, but it's not like past Smashes have been lacking in the content department. They're just putting their focus where they think it needs to go. And, like DaBoss mentioned, they do have a deadline to worry about.

A proper light suit changes Samus' silhouette too much. It's the same reason you won't see a proper Fusion alt. It's too thin and lean, and even with her less bulky other m design, it'll still run the risk of confusing people where hit/hurt boxes are and just generally seeing the character.

Project M had to make the light suit's shoulders massive to get around this. I don't think Sakurai would want to make such a compromise.

Wario and Wii Fit Trainer are exceptions, and those are proper alts with many alternate colors themselves and quite a step different than one suit for Samus (or even Mac's hoodie)

Every character is going to have an alternate costume IIRC, so Samus will probably get something else. I'm guessing the classic Super Metroid look.

That's not the Depths section. Brinstar Depths is the part in Metroid with Kraid's music and the part in Super Metroid with red soil, IMO.

Ok, fine, i'm not going to bother changing the list though. It was just meant as a way to convey that a ton of levels are from the first 15 minutes.

This update was just awesome. Light suit Samus is absolutely killer, and I cannot WAIT to smack my friends into the abyss with Mario's fair and yell "MURICA!!!".

Now the question is, how deep does this rabbit hole go? (Trying to not get excited about possible future Samus alts but I already am.)

Also I got bumped up from junior to member! Yay!

I think it's a little different though. A lot of those first 15 minutes stages (Green Greens, Corneria, etc) pretty accurately represent the final game. The Prime stage? Not so much.

On the topic of colour edits. Couldn't Mr L be a colour choice for Luigi? He won't need any actual modifications to the model, just the textures correct?

Oh wow, I didn't realize Nintendo was going to stream the SSB3DS tournament. I'm sure other people missed that as well lol.

Light Suit palette swap is not an alt.

The green and pink ones are the only ones here that don't refer to a suit in the Metroid games.

Only 2 suits that are missing are the PED suits and the Phazon suit. I guess there are the Fusion suit colors which are somewhat different I believe from their normal counterparts.

It can, but it is from a spin-off Mario game and the only spin-off to get a good amount of representation is Mario Kart. There seems to be nods to the Mario & Luigi series, but who knows, we just got NES Open Tournament Mario lol.

Smash tournament open to me? I'm going! I missed my professional badge by like a day but I will drove down there just for this!

I agree the Other M-ified Dark Suit isn't so hot (loved the Brawl version though), yet I really dig the sleek Light Suit here.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Yea, the Dark Suit was a big hulking suit in Metroid Prime 2, so it doesn't mesh well with the SSB4 Samus look, while the Light Suit looked slick which makes it mesh well with the SSB4 Samus look.
The pink one is based on the Gravity suit from Super Metroid and the green is the same colors as the Power suit in the same game.
I do see the Power Suit green resemblance, but the pink suit being the Gravity Suit seems iffy. It looks like purple, but I can see people seeing it as pink, so fair enough.

Mario's brown outfit is based off of Foreman Spike from Wrecking Crew '98 (according to the original Smash Bros site, though the blue shoes make it closer to the original Wrecking Crew). Colours based on spinoffs date back to the beginning.

It should be noted that Melee made this outfit have a white top and Brawl made it almost black so it's hard to say if it is still a reference to him.

On the topic of mains... Who has a few ideas for their's in 4?
I'm looking at Marth, Greninja, Sheik and if Jiggles is in her. I really want puff to be good again after they murdered her in brawl...

Maybe Rosa but I dunno about her...

Marth and Pit are pretty much going to be my go-to mains in Smash games going forward. Pit v4 looks INSANE, the range and knock back buff on the large majority of his normals is well appreciated. I wouldn't be surprised if you could pull off those Project M Armada carry combos with a bit of improvisation in Smash 4 proper.

Marth is Marth. He's my trademark in Smash games.

Out of the newcomers though, I'm looking at Rosalina (the puppet character stuff sounds pretty involved and I'm the type of guy who loves that technical positioning stuff), Greninja (this dude is incredibly agile and I love that down air/back air way too much; also Guilty Gear/Strider final smash) and Palutena (she just screams brokenness in the best of ways lol).

Oh wow, I didn't know that. I just assumed it was a reference to the hammer suit with the colors black and white in Brawl.

It's still stupid that Brawl Samus isn't based on the most recent Metroid game's look.
The pink one is based on the Gravity suit from Super Metroid and the green is the same colors as the Power suit in the same game.
???

The Gravity Suit in Super Metroid is purple (albeit a lighter purple) and the Power Suit is yellow.

The original Metroid has a pink Varia Suit if that counts.

Checking the sprite, I'm not even sure it's pink, since the "shiny" parts look pink and the darker parts look purple. If you squint hard enough Samus has two purple suits!

This. Smash Bros. has never been the type of game to offer up a small amount of content, and Smash 4 looks to be no different. We're getting a portable version, a larger roster than ever before, long demanded characters, and a decent chance that there will be few cuts.

I get a piece of content not being what you specifically wanted, but unless every piece of content is something you didn't want what is the reason to get so upset? Example: I don't care much for Chrom, so if he ends up being in I won't be upset. I won't be excited, but I won't be upset because there's plenty of other characters who will appeal to me.

The Varia suit in the original Metroid could trigger a pinkish pallet, although there were some other variables that changed color. Either way, it was one of the possible colors there.

Congrats! I think you even joined after me but I've still not posted enough yet to transcend the junior barrier XD

I think it's not hard to understand why some people would be disappointed with the content based around returning characters when a lot of the newcomers get better treatment.

It doesn't help if you find a lot of the newcomers disappointing either, I was alright with most of them until it started becoming more apparent that the gematsu leaks are the only newcomers we're going to get and then they started becoming a lot less appealing.

I wouldn't call a portable version and a "decent amount of cuts" as positives either, I'd rather they focus on one version and I have no idea what the latter is supposed to mean anyway.

Yeah no. Gematsu getting characters right =/= Gematsu newcomers are the only new characters

Sakurai said the pink costume is based on Super Metroid's Gravity Suit on the SSB64 site, so who knows.

The "Dark Suit is on the Japanese cover of MP2 so it doesn't count" is an absolutely absurd stretch.
Not really. The trophy description for Dark Samus is inaccurate and the only Prime 2 track is the multiplayer theme. Keep in mind this is the most recent Metroid game.

Call it what you like, but it's not the same care and attention to detail people keep lauding Sakurai for.

Is there a translated version of the site up somewhere? Apparently I'm learning things from it today.

(But the pink costume does a terrible job of looking like SM's gravity suit.)

Yeah no. Gematsu getting characters right =/= Gematsu newcomers are the only new characters

I hope you're right, but I'm starting to doubt it.

If it there is more then I'm fine with it, but if not then I very much dislike the inclusion of Rosalina, Palutena, Chrom and Miis as characters.

I hate Mii's either way though, their implementation was better than expected but I still think they're incredibly stupid and I'd hate for them to actually be good characters because seeing a load of Mii's at tournaments is one of the most boring things I can possibly imagine.

...why?

Gemstsu never predicted Rosalina, so other newcomers are possible.

Unless the 3DS Character Select screen is changed, the leaked characters, minus Lucas, Snake, Ivysaur and Squirtle, leave one additional spot iirc. I assume it's for Mewtwo.

If that "Miis replace random on the 3DS when enabled" rumor is true, that leaves an additional slot as well.

Congrats! I think you even joined after me but I've still not posted enough yet to transcend the junior barrier XD

I think it's because it took me around 2 years to get initially approved. My profile says I joined in 2012 but I just realized I could finally post here around 2 months ago lol.

Miis are boring because they're not memorable Nintendo characters in any way, I hate seeing them in mario kart as well but the differences between characters are so minute that I don't really have to care about them, in this game they're so versatile that you might well end up seeing them used a lot and that would just make smash tournaments far less interesting to watch for me, I'm actually hoping that they're not possible to use in competitive play due to time constraints or something, if that happened then I wouldn't actually be bothered about their inclusion at all.

Rosalina is implemented well and if there are more characters she's the highest up in terms of me liking their inclusion but I just don't like her design.

Palutena annoys me because it's what Sakurai does every game where he treats some character from games he's made better than everyone else by giving her 12 unique specials and her (presumably beta) model looks rubbish, especially in the face area.

And I fucking loved Kid Icarus like most other people but Palutena wasn't one of the reasons why so I wasn't one of those people clamoring for her inclusion pre-announcement.

I just don't like how they're going more in a newer direction with characters, little mac, pacman and megaman are fucking awesome inclusions but the newer inclusions feel more hit and miss to me just because I can't shake the fact that there are far more retro characters I'd want included before them, and when it happens to be an especially boring newer character then it's just disappointing.

Greninja, WFT, Villager and the Choir Boys are my idea of newcomers that are actually good from relatively recent games.

Also I'm a major fan of having more villain characters in smash so a roster with no newcomer villains whatsoever is awful imo.
