Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

His first article implores news writers to wait for the prepared company line from Phil Spencer before writing a news story about Microsoft. It's almost as if Patrick is saying to wait for an official press release before reporting on anything.

I didn't look at it that way...but yeah, I can see how someone could interpret it in that sense.

Scoops is way off with this one. There's nothing confusing about console exclusive. Stretches the definition?

So Dan does not play RPGs. So they put him in a QL for a turn-based RPG. Nice.

For Dan's defense at least he's not pretending to know anything. Also this practice can't be news to you? A QL crew isn't exactly synonymous for a committee of experts :-)

I agree. I hope he has a blog post tomorrow about what's up with this week. Was it just the form of news he's experimenting with or is he also trying to come off as some anti-industry pundit to get more exposure? Not only is he way off with that stuff but it's so not like Patrick.

They don't have to be experts. Like Vinny and Jeff Quicklooking sports games is great! But Dan doesn't give a fuck right now, he has said maybe 5 words during this.

edit: and disagree with Patrick on that one.

Yeah hehe I bet if he's just being kind and not speaking over the other guys. Matt for one hasn't kept his mouth shut after QL started.

Yep, completely disagree with him on this one, the term is perfectly fine (and very useful when we're in an age where pretty much everything outside of first party is also on PC).

I dont know.... Sony has been pretty too the point with its definitions of exclusivity in recent years.

"First on consoles", "console exclusive", etc....

Those seem pretty clear to me.

Oh and a tip for Patrick regarding what to do with GB news. If your job as "the news guy" for the site could easily be replaced with 1 guy taking 15 minutes to copy + paste some stories from the press release inbox and whatever has popped up on Kotaku that week then maybe you should try harder.

At this rate Patrick delivers a big story or two a year but looking at someone like Jason Schreier who is killing it week after week. What happened to you Scoops? You used to be THE GUY!

Having a layman asking questions about a subject he knows little about can help with content. For the Tested Podcast, Gary Whitta did this for years. He was inquisitive about tech, but did not know everything about it. He kept the podcast from getting to "techy" when he was there, and made Will/Norm explain what they were talking about. The podcast is kinda out of control with techiness now.

It helps have someone like that onboard.

Bombin' needs to invite Adam on for a debate. I have to side with Adam on this one.

To be fair to Patrick, you're comparing him to pretty much the best journalist in the industry - one of the few who don't warrant quotation marks around the word.

But yeah, since he left SF, I'm not sure exactly what his role is. I really like him as a dude, but aside from the video essays and morning show (when they have guests), I rarely consume his content.

I've enjoyed Rorie's commentary in this quick look. I would like him to be in more quick looks.

I like Rorie and this QL has been nice but mostly he's the #1 tales from my ass guy at Giant Bomb. Him and Ian could get really insufferable during the Dark Souls stuff and I haven't yet gotten over it.

I don't think console exclusive is nearly as clear as you guys seem to think it is. Obviously, I understand the term, but I follow this stuff, so of course I know it. "console exclusive", to someone who has never seen the term could mean "exclusive to consoles", just as "PS4 exclusive" means it's exclusive to the PS4.

Okay, so in general parlance it's used as "console exclusive on the PS4", but that's not necessarily any better, and it's no shorter than just saying "it's coming to PS4 and PC". I'm not sure it's deceptive, but I do think that both MS and Sony are very interested in shoving the term "exclusive" into anything they can, and it does end up confusing people. A lot of people were confused about No Man's Sky after the Sony press conference, for instance.

To be clear, it's better than when they say "launching exclusively on ...", which is a terrible way to talk about something that will eventually come to all platforms.

Exclusive to consoles is definitely a reasonable interpretation of that term.

This is true. Dan has asked 2 questions so far. One of which was "was Baldur's Gate D&D"

The funny thing here is that Patrick has gone against people in the past when they complain about some little things in gaming - for example the Peter Dinklage read in Destiny. Now he seems weirdly hung up about the wornding of a PR statement. It is totally unlike him, and his history does not back his current stance up.

Maybe he shaved off his beard, and de-Rikered himself..

I would say that The Interview Dump Truck was a great idea that unfortunately got buried on the site.

They should have done a better job exposing that stuff.

Maybe rolled some skype interviews with developers into the bombcast????

I guess Guests on Bombin' have replaced that a little.

To be fair he had one very big scoop with the Infinity Ward stuff (and that was before GB). He had kind of a big scoop with the Microsoft DRM stuff even if another site broke the story before him... Other than that it's not like he's been spitting out great stories on a regular basis.

Hey, don't be too hard on him. He streamed Spelunky and stuff on a regular basis.

They need to rework their front page and do a better job of exposing and promoting a lot of their content (including the dump truck). A list of newest items doesn't really cut it.

Yeah I commented on the story, I really don't understand the confusion and I think he's way off base.

The solution is to not call something exclusive when it's not exclusive.

Treating everything in a vacuum without qualifiers is pretty strange. There are degrees, console exclusive is a degree. Not everything is black and white. Everyone in this industry is clear on what console exclusive means.

It's exclusive to a console. Sony called it a console exclusive. Double Fine was discussing other platforms within a day of the announcement. "Coming to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita and also PC, Mac, and Linux, but not the Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, Wii, or 3DS" is a little wordy for a closing statement during a brief segment of E3.

Should have just attached the interviews to relevant gameplay footage. Videos are much easier to promote (you can embed them and shit) and they're monetizable.

And I think at least since he started Bombin the AM with Alex and the Spelunky streaming for a while there he was producing the best and most content on Giant Bomb.
Most? Probably. Best? Dunno about that. Unless you're someone like Jeff or Vinny, solo content is very hard to pull off.

I want to agree with the opinion that console exclusive is a dumb fucking term. It really reads more like exclusive to consoles. I only know the way it's being used in this case because I've been on game forums for years and Xbox fanboys used to use the term a lot to say they had exclusives over the PS3 when it was also on PC. It's a dumb fanboy term and shouldn't be used.

Also I think that now that we got proper GB West and new GB East, Chicago will go to third place in content production.

Where did this love for Schrier come from all of a sudden? Last I checked, he was just a shitaku defender who sometimes asked the question GAF wanted asked. Now he's done this in depth crytek story which is great, but I must have missed the turning point somewhere.

Then again, I don't actively read that rag so I guess that makes sense.

What are you talking about?

Also. if you go back to Sony E3 2013, the phrase "console Exclusive Debut" used about 50 times (or near enough). There was no hate then. but somehow there is need for complaint now.

Coming from someone who has not had a bad word for Patrick sense he joind GB, I am actually weirdly hoping there is an article put up next week highlighting that opinionative (or whatever his current style is) can lead to more views and interaction, but is ultimately bad for end users, and the writer involved in the long run. That would mean his actions this week were a front to highlight this, and would be part of the article he writes.

His current output is just too "Un Scoops Like" to make sense - although I know I am stretching here.

I roll my eyes when a platform holders rattle off "console exclusive" so much... but it's not that deceptive of a term.

Yeah, I don't think it's really deceptive, but it's not as clear cut as a lot of people want to argue (at least if you're not already immersed in this world).

In the spectrum of marketing speak from video game companies, thought, it's definitely no where near as bad a s a lot of other stuff that gets spewed out.

His "I am going to blindly defend everything Kotaku puts out" thing is annoying but the guy does good work.

Kotaku is a dumb hole but Jason's work is a diamond in that pile of bullshit.
