You said that every Smash Bros. to date has introduced older characters, but I was simply pointing out that Samus and Ness were not "old" in 1998. I don't see what the bulk of this post has to do with your original argument.

Wait, how is Samus not an old character? The fact she had just appeared in Super Metroid doesn't mean she didn't start way before that. Same with every other character from 64 aside from Jigg, Pika and Ness, which were the freshest ones. The fact that Samus and Ness weren't as popular as the others was more of a side comment about the fact Sakurai wasn't shy of choosing less popular characters even between a bunch of vintage characters.

My original post was to show that this time we're mostly getting new characters, and almost no vintage character, vintage as in having started long ago; i.e. Mario is vintage, just as Ice Climbers, Dedede or Mac... WFT, Rosalina or Chrom, not so much. It's all new blood.
