New Super Smash Bros character to be revealed on Monday

Not a joke. Robin is obviously a better character gameplay wise considering she has all the jobs available to her/him. On the other hand, Chrom has a better design, a distinctive weapon, better supports conversations, and played a way bigger role in the story. He also appeared in the DLC, where Robin was non-existant which clearly means IS considers him the top character in the game.

Pretty much, while Robin's backstory is directly tied to the story the main character is clearly Chrom.

There's only room for one dead Ninty franchise around here.

Nothing stopping Sakurai from putting both of the characters in, since they both should be playable at this point, besides his own shitty taste and awful bias. Also, I prefer Ray 01's model from GCN Custom Robo.

Sure there is! (They're not important enough to be playable characters)

Has Ray not been seen as an AT yet? I would love if he were playable, always thought those games were a blast

Wrong.

They're the protagonists of one of the few multi-game franchises which haven't had a playable character as of yet.
They're the protagonists of a multi-game franchise that isn't that important. They're C tier series, which is why they're ATs instead of playable.

Hasn't Ness still not been revealed?

Yeah they seriously need to show that he's still in the game. If he's not in there, I dunno what I'm gonna do. That would be like "Hey, we're gonna take him and Lucas out because we want you to stop thinking about Mother and asking us about it!" But they released Earthbound on the Wii U virtual console so I guess that theory shouldn't be true.

Robin isn't obligatorily deployed in the DLC battles, unlike Chrom, but all those conversations with the guest characters after the battles, where they talk about themselves a bit, the player makes some choices and then they offer to join the player's party are only with Robin and the guest, no Chrom at all.

And, really, the role in the main story is basically equal for both. They're together from the start. Chrom is the leader, but you get introduced to all through the Avatar/Robin. He also takes more and more command of the battles even storywise through the game.
And, by the end of the game, it's Robin himself that makes the plan that stops the future from repeating. The build up to the final battle and the best ending also give more focus to Robin than Chrom. Most of the focus on Chrom's family itself ends alongside the Plegia chapters.

Really, this isn't a situation like the Mystery of the Emblem remake where the avatar was the point of view character but pretty much irrelevant storywise. He's there with important connections to the villains, story role and focus.

Posted this in the OT thread:
I dunno why but I feel like if Ridley ever gets into Smash, I feel like he might have qualities that no other character has. Like I can see him being a supreme force in the air, maybe him being able to air grab with his talons and take you to the skies for some hellacious air combos and juggles. Also some pretty dope air maneuverability like Firebrand from UMvC3 via his swoops and such

Here's a visual of what I mean http://youtu.be/glC3smK8_B0?t=3m30s

I guess to offset that his ground game wouldn't be great, outside of having a projectile. Think of him being a "reverse Little Mac," great in the air but ground game leaves something to be desired.
I haven't heard anything about either of them being shown as ATs again, so I'm still hoping. And yes it's an amazing series that would be awesome to have on the Wii U, too bad Nintendo seems to stop giving a shit about Sci-Fi barring X, which isn't bad but you know more Sci-Fi Nintendo damn it.

And Rhythm Heaven isn't? Punch-Out could be considered one as well. That's an awful argument you have there.

Rhythm Heaven just had a new game that sold well, as did punch out. The new golden sun didn't even have Isaac as a playable character.

I'm just telling you why they're doomed to be ATs and won't be playable. It's the same reason Starfy isn't playable.

In all honesty I'm surprised Custom Robo is even an AT. Sakurai must love the series or something.

the problem is more that they keep choosing Fire Emblem characters who look the same...

What they have in common:
Blue hair
They all have capes
they all use swords

That's it, they don't actually look the same, they don't fight the same and they have completely different silhouettes.

We already have a character good in the air and bad on the ground: Jigglypuff.

That's true but now that Jigglypuff has Fairy moves then perhaps Sakurai would maybe change her up a little.

I think Ridley would fit the "air superior" motif more since anything other than that would make people seem like he's a "Charizard" knockoff with a flame breath/blast projectile, being able to glide/flap his wings and maybe some similar normals.

I love these announcements, but I think it would be great if there were some unannounced new characters that we could unlock in the game (one or maybe two).

Of course, we would know pretty quick whats with people beating the game on day one and spoiling the surprise for everybody on the internet but still, that would make for a nice little bonus, a fresh one.

What? I didn't know Punch-Out did all that great, at least nothing above the level of a "C" tier franchise.

Also, I know that Isaac isn't the protagonist of Dark Dawn, but he still appears in that game and not counting that he's basically the franchise's face, though I wouldn't have a problem having either Felix or Matthew as the playable rep from Golden Sun. Because you know, it's going to happen along with Ray Mk II being playable.

How are you surprised a series that has had like 4 games has an AT? I'm surprised he wasn't playable before.

They didn't add these characters because most Fire Emblem fans don't know who they are, but do know Chrom.

Chrom is expected. Mainly because recency effect.

It's actually very interesting how Fire Emblem made it's way to the west through Melee. And since the fall out of Roy we have now had lord's with Blue Hair in Smash and nothing else.

And yet, people want Lucina, which boggles the mind considering they have the exact same fighting style.

I guess they like Marth Cosplayers.

Dialogue and CG says they have the same fighting style, but Lucina in her main class actually shares an animation set with Marth (and it's inspired by Marth's old 2d animations, so Einherjar Marth sharing the same animations isn't laziness), not Chrom.

Custom Robo is basically a dead series at this point. Maybe in another entry or two it could be added as a retro character.

Apparently the new Punch Out did well enough to boost Little Mac up from AT status. The new Golden Sun wasn't enough to do so for Isaac.

I'm curious why you think Isaac and Custom Robo weren't added if they're as important as you say. Do you think Sakurai couldn't come up with a moveset for them? He secretly hates the franchise, or it's fans? If they're ATs (I can't imagine they won't return), they were never even considered to be playable. The only answer I can see is that they're from C-tier franchises, which makes sense as that's what most ATs are (Dillon, Starfy, Saki, Barbara the Bat, Jill from Drill Dozer, etc).

.
Chrom is the main character in the Fire Emblem game that the most people have played. It's intuitive that he'd be first choice for a newcomer.

The real question is why the Fire Emblem creators make so many blue-haired protagonists.

Work right at 10 EST on Monday, FUCK!

Trying to figure out how to not spoil myself on this when I watch it later...gonna be tough since I imagine just going to the livestream link will spoil it after the fact.

I'd like it if the Shulk character went something similar to the Greninja trailer.

In which they reveal both a Veteran AND a Newcomer in the same video.

Probably won't happen though, cause in the Pokemon one it kinda worked cause they were, you know, both Pokemon.

But it'd be amazing if they announced someone like Captain Falcon, who comes in kicking ass, while in the shadows you see a silhouette of the Monado activating, then right before the Falcon Punch, another silhouette jumps right in front of the punch, all wrapped in a yellow shield. The punch hits and does only 1 damage.

"Shulk forsees his victory!" (Best line I could come up with for him -_-)

That's it, they don't actually look the same, they don't fight the same and they have completely different silhouettes.

As someone who hasn't played many of the more recent Fire Emblems, I don't normally think of the characters with the same weapons as having vastly different canonical fighting styles. Certainly, in a series with as many units as Fire Emblem, they could have chosen some that didn't use swords at least.

I usually dislike CG reveal videos on videogames (Leave that stuff for movies or something else) But with Smash is the only exception because oh my god each newcomer reveal videos it's just super awesome, plus we all know it will have actual gameplay footage coming right after the CG footage so it's the perfect blend. My top three are Rosalina, Megaman and Greeninja/Charizard. That one always give me chills.
