Thinking about Rayman...
The roster was finalized in 2012, when Legends was supposed to be a Nintendo exclusive, and Ubisoft was supporting the Wii U with ZombiU and various HD ports. He could have actually been planned to be playable back then.

Okay, I stand corrected about TW101 being Nintendo-owned, but that changes nothing in terms of how I feel about this Rayman trophy. I agree it's weird and out of left field for sure, but this hardly even suggests he's playable. He's got nowhere near the star status to make the cut, and Sakurai has said a few times how a third-party character has to be incredibly distinctive and very special to make it into Smash.

Not just that, but consider Sakurai's "red, blue, yellow" motif for Pac-Man's trailer and The way he's postured Mario, Mega Man, Sonic, and Pac-Man as "the mascots" and "the big four." I dunno, I'm just not seeing Rayman as playable bases on just this trophy.

Without a doubt, Rhythm a Heaven Fever for the Wii. Not only is it the best in the series, it's the most immediately inviting and accessible one. Rhythm Heaven for DS is quite good, but a bit trickier and sometimes frustrating due to the stylus controls.

Rhythm Heaven fever was far and away my GotY 2012. It's THAT excellent.
 
I never thought that Rayman would get mentioned before Bomberman as Bomberman had presence in Japan at one point and had some presence in the west.

But I guess Bomberman is a classic niche series , I doubt Sakurai would pick someone that isn't overly hyped , not on his list of favorites or not an odd ball type character.

Actually Rayman is closer to Nintendo than Snake is. Snake is heavily Sony orientated whilst Rayman is more neutral. Rayman's appeared on all Nintendo platforms since the Game Boy Colour whereas Snake has only appeared on NES, Gamecube and 3DS (although my Metal Gear knowledge is minimal so I'm not sure if it's the same Snake). However Snake is a more iconic character than Rayman.

Excluding Lucario, wasn't there only 3 hidden newcomers in Brawl? It's not a stretch, especially if Sakurai wants to avoid the internet spoilers like last time (like it even matters much thanks to the leak).

I'd prefer Excitebiker honestly.

All of his aerial moves could be based around bike tricks, wheelie dash attack. When he takes a certain amount of damage he "crashes" and gets knocked off his bike and has to play solo as a weaker and slower guy who needs to get back on his bike.

It'll be a new model and everything that looks colorful and perfect for the new Smash, but it'll just be a trophy.
 
I have to say, I never would have predicted bloody Rayman to be in Smash Bros, in any form.
Nice to see the first bit of European representation though. Unless Diddy Kong counts as a Rareware rep...
Thinking about it, all of Rayman's main game's are on Nintendo Systems; 1, 2, 3, Origins and Legends, all of the Rabbids games as well. Makes more sense than Snake in that regard if he is in, however fucking weird and fantastic that'd be. My heart can't choose between Shulk or Rayman :(
 
Rayman trophy is the worst thing I could have woken up to. I haven't bought an ubi game since red steel ripped me off. I never want to again. If rayman is playable I'm going to seriously cry. I absolutely loathe ubi. The same ubi who is withholding completed Wii U games. Sigh samurai.

Maybe they're withholding WiiU games because they asked Sakurai to make Rayman playable and he just made him a trophy instead.

There are other characters out there and even if there weren't, we have DLC.


I doubt any leak outside of the salromano one is even remotely legitimate.

Based on Sakurai's previous statements regarding the roster and trailers, it seems that he wants all of the newcomer trailers to come out before the game does. Chrom and Chorus Kids won't be unlockable... unless he decides to go the Mario Kart 8 route of revealing hidden dudes. This does leave the slim possibility that salromano was only privy to the newcomers with trailers, and the 60-character roster will be revealed post-launch.

Also, I just realised that the "midnight" time that has been staring in my face on smashbros.com is actually the east coast timezone, and the reveal is actually going to occur 30 minutes earlier than I thought it was - like I just jumped into a time machine or something! Quick, what's a good rhyming chant involving Shulk's name?

Sakurai literally said that he wanted every character to have a video. There's either no unlockables, he's doing a Mario Kart 8, or he won't show the last two videos (Chorus Kids and Chrom) before launch.

Hrmmm, Ubisoft is a big company that makes a lot of games. I think if you did some pre-purchase research, you could probably deign which are the good 'uns and which ones are Red Steel-tier. Case in point, you missed out on the excellent Red Steel 2. It feels a bit like you're cutting off your nose to spite your face, especially since Michel Ancel works there and everything he does is wonderful.
