Lucina seems to be a clone. She's a bonus character like Dr. Mario or Pichu in Melee; she's not taking up resources from anyone except other clones.

I have to say I'd be lying if I said a Shulk reveal wouldn't excite me more. I still need to play Awakening, but these characters don't look that exciting to me.

She's a clone, but its a female clone which in this case is better than a male clone. I'm not one to cry about gender diversity in games, but there really was no point in Chrom being in this game.
 
That's a nice addition to the female roster, but now I want Tharja to be in the game. Also, I was debating whether we should have Marth or or Lucina in the game. I had given up on her when Marth was announced, but I guess there's no reason why we shouldn't have both, is there?

If the options are Lucina as an alt-skin/clone or no Lucina at all, which I expect would have been the case, I'll take this every day.

FE is a huge franchise for Nintendo, dude, it only stands to reason that it would receive the upper-tier amount of characters.

Mario has 5 slots.
Pokemon has 4 slots.
Fire Emblem has 4 slots.
Zelda has 4 slots.
Donkey Kong has 2 slots.
Metroid has 2 slots.
..and so-on.

Wrong wrong wrong wrong. When people talk about "slots" it means they believe that a new character must be getting in at the expense of their desired character. That's bullshit because the roster is set from the beginning of development. If a character isn't in the game, that character probably wasn't in the game from day one.

I love Lucina, but I was hoping for a Marth alternate costume rather than an outright clone. Anna would be a fun choice, or an as-yet-unrepresented Beast or Dragon Fire Emblem female.

There wouldn't have been a slot at all. It would've just been Robin. She's in because she's a clone of Marth.

Get this "wasted slot" stuff out of your head. A clone doesn't waste a slot, it adds to the roster. She took no one's slot away -- she seems like one of the later additions because of the fact that she is a clone of Marth.

It is the same situation as Melee where they added Roy, Ganondorf, Pichu, Falco, Doc, and Young Link. Those five characters didn't take any slots away. They added to the roster count and people got to play as their favorite character because of it (hello Ganondorf). It's the same thing here. Lucina is in the game because they decided to just reuse 90% of Marth's animations and have made a ton of Lucina fans happy as a result of it.

She'll still have her differences from Marth just like Ganondorf did from Captain Falcon in Melee or Roy did from Marth.

Only 2 clones in an entire roster of 37 so far is pretty good. And one of them is a new character. People should be happy, even if she doesn't add a new move set to the table.

I should have said "dead". I think IntSys has no idea where to go with the series, I don't think they want to go back to the lighthearted comedy of the earlier games in a war series.
 
Probably my favorite thing about this thread so far is people continuously confusing the Elite Four stage to be from another game.
 
I'm perversely curious to see a live reaction of myself, had I recorded one.

I was cackling maniacally as they showed Lucina. "The leak is not everything!" I thought, in addition to glowing at my favorite FE lord being playable.

Then Captain Falcon appeared. "Holy shit, can this trailer get any better!" Not only had Sakurai subverted our Shulk expectations, and given us a character not leaked, but now the fan favorite veteran was here.

Then Robin appeared and I'm cackling all over again. Another character who's not Shulk! Another character who's not Chrom! Another character who wasn't leaked!

Then Chrom is shown as a Final Smash. At first I thought he was a character, though, so I'm thinking, "Five FE characters?!?" And then female Robin. "PERFECT."

Oh man, what a rollercoaster rush of emotions for someone who thought the Gematsu leak was the limit, and who is a huge FEA fan yet never expected Lucina and Robin to make it.

They did Chrom so dirty here, like they really had to include the inferior version of him instead just to appease the feminists? And relegate him to being a novelty? I was hyped for a Shulk reveal too. I guess Sakurai just wants to drink the sweet milk of my tears

No, you're detailing a specific scenario. Just look a few posts above your own to see how "slots" is actually used. People speak of "slots" because there IS a predetermined number developed and put in the game. The only thing this talk of slots refers to is publicly knowing about characters in the game. The more "slots" taken, the less slots that are left, and as a result, the shrinking probability of (x character) out of a million having been made for the game.

I've played Awakening, but I know what you mean. Part of the fun of crossover games is learning about cool characters that you otherwise would have overlooked. And sometimes you get breakout characters like Captain Falcon because of that.

When people talk slots, they mean that this character takes up too much of the disc, so now Goku and Naruto won't fit.

Chrom wasn't even strong in FE. Teaming Morgan and Lucina up was OP.
