They started it with the second Fire Emblem on the DS (that's Japan only). I think it's a welcome change to the series, although alot of old timers hate it.

Most popular and most recent FE game so it shouldn't be that surprising.

One character wouldn't be surprising. Two is pushing it too far. Not even Kid Icarus: Uprising gets two, and has an awesome cast (better than Awakening) written by Sakurai himself.

I think it's a bit ridiculous. Good move for Lucina fans, I guess, but a really bad one for the sake of variety.

FE is a huge franchise for Nintendo, dude, it only stands to reason that it would receive the upper-tier amount of characters.

Mario has 5 slots.
Pokemon has 4 slots.
Fire Emblem has 4 slots.
Zelda has 4 slots.
Donkey Kong has 2 slots.
Metroid has 2 slots.
..and so-on.

Which reminds me, in Brawl Star Fox got 3 characters; Fox, Falco, and Wolf. What are the odds of that happening again? We already have Fox of course, but does anyone think we'll get both Falco and Wolf? If we had to choose between one of them, I honestly don't know which would would make it. Falco has been in since Melee, but Wolf seems like he was much more popular. Plus Wolf was different enough (Fox's rival + he wasn't just a straight clone unlike Falco) that I could see why Sakurai would pick him over Falco.

BUT there's also a new Star Fox game coming, so maybe they'll just keep all three for the exposure. I don't know.

Fire Emblem is one of the best selling game on the 3DS and a big franchise since Melee that is the game that brought Fire Emblem here.

Metroid is a pretty small franchise compared to it in term of fans. I'm even more surprised that there is 2 Mother characters in a serie with three games and where only one got in the west. Maybe a Mother Collection inbound with the Mother 3 joke from E3?

Awakening was one good day for Fire Emblem though, it's the most popular and recent, but Metroid to this day gets met with acclaim. It's just a semi-dead franchise. But it's the most alive of the dead franchises, I think. Next to Star Fox because it's confirmed getting worked on right now.

No, you're logic is completely flawed. Lucina isn't a "waste of a slot" in any regard. Lucina is ONLY IN THE GAME because she can be logically represented as an exact clone of Marth. The effort to include her in the game is miniscule compared to any other character, Fire Emblem or otherwise. If she weren't a clone of Marth, she wouldn't be in the game at all. She didn't take anything away from anyone and is simply an easy addition to the roster.

The pros VASTLY outweigh the cons for her:

1. Female Rep
2. Popular Character
3. LOGICAL clone character
4. Very easy to implement without taking effort/resources away from other additions/work on the game
