This makes me want a sakurai-directed, platinum-developed captain falcon game. Not F-Zero, but a game starring captain falcon, doing his captain falcon things.

Captain Falcon game ala Vanquish but more melee based ;D

So after Charizard and Captain Falcon both appeared in a newcomer's trailer and had it treated as an official reveal, I'm just about prepared to declare Mr. Game & Watch and all the "retro" characters dead in the water. I'm NEVER usually this pessimistic, but there's a distinct focus on newer characters in this game, and ALL of the revealed characters have had their own game within the last decade...

It's probably just my usual crazy blathering, but I won't be able to let out that anxious breath that I'm holding in until the day when they're finally revealed.

I don't think you should be worried. I've said this before, but why would Sakurai put Game & Watch - a veteran of two Smash games, mind you - in a trailer only to turn around and say, "guess what, he's cut!" That doesn't make sense to me, especially since he wasn't explicitly deconfirmed in the trailer the way Chrom was. It's a little strange that he wasn't "made official" after that trailer, but perhaps it's because his bit was tacked on at the end, a sort of postscript to the trailer, whereas Charizard and Falcon played a role in the meat of the trailer itself.

I dunno. I'm not confident enough with Takamaru's position.

I'm not too sure either - he definitely could be made unique, but with Greninja and Mii Swordfighter being fast, shuruiken-using blade characters and Robin filling the magic swordsman niche, Takamaru seems a lot less unique. I'd still love to see him, but it doesn't seem as likely as before.

Lucina was a blindside and I was definitely expecting Chrom over her, yet I think her inclusion makes sense. You know people were complaining about "oh geez three blue-haired swordsmen, UGH"? I think adding some gender variety to that makes things more interesting.

And hey, now that the Gematsu leak is in question, I wouldn't count out Takamaru just yet. There's still hope! :)

If Lucina's existence doesn't diminish Marth then I can live with it. But the speculation about Marth seeming slower in the demo combined with Lucina's cloney moveset has me concerned. Lucina isn't worth a nerfed Marth to me.

The leak was wrong though, right? Like, 100% wrong because it said Chrom would be a character. So why are we still adamant that Shulk is in?

I feel like Takamaru lost all chances of being the dead franchise that this Smash resurrects once Megaman, Pac-man, and Little Mac were all confirmed. He can only resurrect so many franchises, guys.

1) There's multiple levels between playing the game daily and not knowing anything. He quiet possibly got some info mixed up. 8/11 is still pretty good, especially with the possibility to be 10/11.
2) Xenoblade guy retweeting the announcements + voice actor for Shulk confirming work on a secret project makes Shulk seem likely. Same with Rhythym Heaven having an enemy in Smash Run making Chorus Men seem likely.

Yes, but if everything was about how unique a character is then Lucina wouldn't be in the game.

Dark Pit - I may be wrong, but I feel like now I can settle on Dark Pit being a clone of Pit now that we've seen Lucina. It'd explain why he was in Palutena's reveal trailer.

I agree with almost everything you said (except for louie) but I especially believe in dark pit as a lucina-level of clone after today. I think he'll be the more 'offensive' or 'heavy' version of pit, using clubs, cannons, etc.

Look like Cap Falcon learned some pro tips from Mega Man.

I'm just hoping the sudden Murasame Castle push from the last couple years means something.

At first, I thought it would meant a revival project but now I'm not sure about his chance being in Smash Wii U/3DS. I presume that they need to save some characters for next generation Smash. :P

The theory is that it may have been from earlier versions of the roster or something. So it may still have some truth to it.

It did have some wild picks that came true.

Yes, but if everything was about how unique a character is then Lucina wouldn't be in the game.

It's still a consideration for newcomers from completely unrepresented series. Making him a Greninja clone would be more akin to a Melee Ganondorf situation, rather than Toon Link or Lucina; and I don't think that's all that likely to happen considering the rest of the newcomers.

Not 100% wrong - it got Palutena, Pac-Man, and it got Mii Fighter by name, so it could still be right about Shulk. Plus Xenoblade Chronicles is coming out soon, and there's the Monolith retweet.

Hypin' on a Prayer

See people mention this all the time but it looks like Shulk was revealed to be in Xenoblade Chronicles X.

This could very well be that secret project and it's looking more and more likely.

Robin fights like what everyone has been asking Ganondorf to be, a slow magic/sword weilder, and apparently wasn't planned from the beginning, apparently.
There is literally no reputable evidence to suggest that Robin wasn't planned from the beginning. Additionally, the idea that his moveset was originally Ganondorf's somehow is preposterous since all of his magic moves are based specifically off of Fire Emblem spells, which Ganondorf obviously wouldn't have access to.

Leaker nor Sakurai ever said that. Sakurai changing his mind on things is what the leaker said, which could refer to Sakurai changing when he wanted to reveal Shulk, or Sakurai changing Chrom to Lucina. Regardless, Robin would take too much work to not be planned from the beginning.

That said, I do take this as more evidence that Ganondorf will continue to have the best moveset in the series. I just hope they don't give him that shitty TP design this time. OOT or even WW design would be excellent.

Before this reveal, I was really hoping Demise could've made an appearance in the game. But assuming Shulk is still in, that would be about 10 characters with swords which is probably more than enough.

You'll probably get to play as Demise in Hyrule Warriors, since Ghirahim is in the game and all of the humanoid villains will likely be playable :-)

So I made a count of the number of playable representatives for each 1st party franchise, since 3rd party will most likely have only 1 character representative as playable (tell me if I missed something). So far, we have:

Mario Bros. - 6
Donkey Kong - 2
Pokemon - 4
Star Fox - 1
Legend of Zelda - 4
Metroid - 2
Kirby - 2
Kid Icarus - 2
F-Zero - 1
Fire Emblem - 4
Punch-Out - 1
Animal Crossing - 1
Wii Fit - 1
Mii - 1 (Possibly 3)

Fire Emblem franchise just now becomes one of the most represented franchises, tied with Pokemon and LoZ currently. Well deserved I think since FE has been a long-running series and has a big cast of characters to boot.

If Jigglypuff gets added later on, that makes 5 Pokemon reps, which makes sense since Pokemon is as big, if not bigger, than the Mario franchise in terms of popularity. We may even get up to 6 reps for Pokemon this time around. Zelda franchise, while not as big as those 2, I think will also exceed 4. I predict that Ganondorf will be there when the game comes out.

From the looks of it, the only franchise underrepresented as of this time is Star Fox. With a new game on the horizon, I assume that at least 1 rep will be added there.

But the completely different build, animations and such would mean the change in plans, if it occurred, would have had to be before any asset creation took place - nothing about Robin looks like they've been reskinned.

Like, seriously guys, where would captain falcon be without smash bros? God damn. Sakurai basically OWNS the man just like he owns pit now.

I'd still rather Medusa being a clone of Palutena than Dark Pit being included, but I know DP is more likely.

Star Fox should get Falco and Wolf back. At the very least the series will get one of the characters back. Hopefully Donkey Kong gets one more rep. As long running as DKC is, it's sad that it only has two characters.

If Sakurai deliberately crafted this reveal to screw with everyone who assumed that the leak was the be-all-and-end-all, then revealing three characters at E3 who were all on the list had to be part of it as well, lulling people into the resigned sense of false security in the first place. We'll be debating how much of Sakurai tugging at people's heartstrings was deliberate and how much was coincidence for years to come...

So here's a character list I made:

How does it look?
Pretty ridiculous.

Demise is coming, IMO. Just wait for the big villains trailer. We have had one villain revealed so far.

In Smash 4, after the credits roll, there'll be a secret phone call where Sakurai reveals that hewas the Gematsu leaker all along!
